We spend Christmas Eve with the ILs and they do a huge seafood feast. It's been their tradition for years and it's amazing.

My husband suggested Chinese food! I researched our new town and found a good eat-in place that does family style. I'm excited!

I love any kind of dinner that's heavy appetizers. If I were hosting Christmas Eve, that's what I would do.

Shrimp and grits. DH goes down to the docks and gets fresh shrimp a day or so before and I can have the grits prepared and then I toss the shrimp and bacon in after church and it's done quickly.

@Mrs. Bee: my mom is Swedish so we always did a smörgåsbord (meatballs, lingonberry, fish, cheeses, breads etc)

Heavy appetizers: some type of sandwich (with meat in Crock-Pot), perogies wrapped in bacon, brie/apple/honey crostini, veggie tray, Christmas cookies, etc.

We usually have a heavy appetizer meal. We used to do that plus a main course and dessert, but would often skip them because it was too much and eat the rest the next day!

Eating Mexican food on Christmas Eve is pretty traditional around here, not sure why! We'll have tamales and enchilada's at my MIL's before heading to church.

Christmas Eve with the ILs is an appetizer heavy bonanza. They go full Guinea with cured meats, cheeses, lasagna, seafood like jumbo shrimp and bakala (sp?), fried smelts, prime rib, antipasto, pizza bread, and then an obscene dessert table. My family used to do a Christmas ham and pecan pie.

We typically go to my in-laws for Christmas and they do a heavy appetizer dinner. It's things like chips/dip, meatballs, and other finger foods.
