I think dressy peep toes are OK but flip flops and sandals are not!
The only time the latter might be OK is if you're in a business casual environment and 30+ weeks pregnant, in the summer and swelling!

I agree and my last place had a policy similar to that. I think it's quite difficult to differentiate between ok sandals and not ok sandals. My boss' rule was "if you'd wear them to the beach, they're a no no".

I work in a school, so sandals are okay, but flip flops are not. I'm loving my sandals, since my feet are already swelling at only 31 weeks!

Our rule is no flip flops and if they are sandals they must have a back to them.

I teach so I am on my feet all day. Comfort is my top priority, particularly while pregnant. I never wear flip flops to work but have no issues with peep toe flats or nice sandals.
honeydew / 7968 posts
I think it really depends on the job. For professional, flip flops are not ok, but if you are a lifeguard, shoes would be weird!
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
We can wear anything as long as it's not dirty or sweatpants/pamajas.
I'm wearing a company t-shirt, jeans and flip flops today and am perfectly acceptable for my job. It depends on what kind of job you have I wouldn't want my banker to be wearing flip flops, or a server at a restaurant though

I think fancy flip flops and nice pedicured feet are fine if the weather is right. LOL.
coconut / 8483 posts
I don't have an issue with dressier sandals. I'm in sales and a lot of my customers are very casual, so I don't mind wearing some nice gladiators to see them.
I'd never wear flip flops though! MIL is an EA and they got a letter sent out saying what was appropriate, and she was SO offended.. so she didn't listen to it and kept wearing her flip flop/capri/tank top combo every day. lol

We can't even wear peep toe flats I wear lots of ballet flats in the summer.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
I wear flip flops to work as soon as the weather gets above 65 degrees. We don't see customers/clients in my office so, it is appropriate. We also wear tee shirts and shorts in the summer.
When I go onsite, I wear closed toe shoes.

Strangely enough, flip flops are totally acceptable at my work place! I've been wearing them lately because I have swollen preggo feet, but usually I don't because I feel weird wearing them at work!
In general though... my workplace is extremely casual. To the point where I wish they would enforce a bit more dress code because I feel like half of the people here look really unprofessional

@.twist.: Haha agree!
I think it depends on the work environment. My office is very casual (everyone wears jeans every day), so I wear flip flops a lot in the summer. In the winter I mostly wear flats. I would get weird looks if I wore heels to work!

As a business casual setting I am surprised that so many people wear sandals that are just a step or two above flip flops (IMO).
honeydew / 7235 posts
I work in an incredibly casual environment (advertising) so jeans are the norm most days - and I wear flip flops too!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
If all the rest of the shoe is closed, then peep toe is fine for me in the summer. No thong sandals though.
honeydew / 7235 posts
@lawbee11: yes! if I ever dress up at work people ask if I was at an interview! ha.... actually - i did have a secret interview and I had to change in the car on the way to it from my office.

I work in a business casual office (men wear at least slacks and polo), and I wear 'fancy' flip flops, not like Old Navy plain ones. They have jewels or pretty embellishments on them.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
@lawbee11: Haha same. I get a lot of 'why are you so dressed up??' if I wear a dress or heels!

I work in a very casual office. I wear jeans everyday as do most everyone in the office and in the summer, I wear flip flops. They are nice looking sandals though. I also have some peep toe flats I like to wear a lot in the summer. I think it just depends on where you work.
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
I wear sandals to work but they are much dressier than a casual flip flop. I would not wear flip flops ever.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
No flip flops or sandals . . . or any sandals that make an annoying flipping sound as you walk around! I work in a conservative profession, so I rarely show my toes, but I think peep toe flats/wedges/pumps (assuming the rest of the shoe is closed) are fine for business casual.
pomegranate / 3331 posts
absolutely unacceptable in my office, but my office is somewhat conservative. no peep toes, no sandals. i wear ballet flats almost every day and throw on heels if i have a meeting.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Peep toes and "nice/dressy sandals" are okay. Flip flops are a no-no at work.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
I can wear flip flops and have seen others wear them. I don't like the flopping noise they make so I'm adding some ballet flats to my shoe collection.
Some departments are business causal but in my department, we are mainly in the labs so we can wear whatever we want (jeans, graphic tees, etc.) I do have lab friendly shoes that I change into since flip flops aren't very safe in the lab.
nectarine / 2690 posts
I wear flip flops to work daily and its totally A-OK here. I think it depends on your demographic. I'm sure not everywhere is as lax in the workplace as we are in AZ.
eggplant / 11287 posts
My office is super casual and we can basically wear whatever we want. Flip flops are okay on sunny days!
coconut / 8472 posts
I think I can wear pretty much anything I want here, but I personally probably wouldn't wear flip flops. The software industry is funny, people on the business side (sales, marketing, etc) all dress in business/business attire. But I'm in engineering and people tend to wear all sorts of stuff - shorts, graphic tees, flip flops, etc.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
Our office is super casual, especially on Fridays when we can wear jeans. So peep toe wedges and sandals are all I wear during the summer.
eggplant / 11408 posts
We can wear whatever, but I second PPs: if you show your toes, you need to keep your nails looking nice!!

I work in the insurance industry, and we can wear sandals as long as they are not "beach wear." I am always amazed at how many people wear straight up flip flops, though. It doesn't bother me at all (why should I care what other people wear on their feet?), I would just never push it that far. I am wearing sandals today, but I call them 'fancy sandals' because they are embellished. lol.
ETA: I also never show my toes unless they are polished and looking pretty!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Nobody gives a crap at my work! I'll wear sandals anytime and nicer flip flops on Fridays.
eggplant / 11408 posts
So after I posted, I looked at.my toes and realized I was a big, fat hypocrite...my mother would have killed.me for the state of my polish. Don't worry, it is remidied now

We don't really have a dress code - some teachers wear sweats (and these are not PE teachers who are supposed to wear athletic clothes) and lots wear flip flops. I do once in a while, usually if I'm wearing a maxi dress and it's really hot. In the beginning of the year, I dress more professionally and only wear jeans on Fridays, but as the school year goes on, I get lazy and more and more casual. However, I never wear sweats. I can't believe some teachers do!
