What is your ideal gestational age to go into labor?

39 weeks. I had my son on his due date, and went into labor with my daughter on hers (though she was born two days later...). But that last week is pure hell. I can make it to 39 weeks (thought week 38 is pretty rough) by telling myself its better for the baby, bla bla bla- but by the time 39 rolls around I'm so over it.

Both of mine were at 39w3d so it would kinda funny to have a third at that same gestational age!

I had my first at 38w6d and my second at 38w4d. It was pretty ideal! Plus they were both good sizes (8lbs 3 oz, and 9lbs 11 oz) so I wouldn't have wanted to get any bigger!

So interesting! I actually loved being pregnant and really wanted to go beyond 40 weeks. I had asked my doctor how long after 40 weeks they'd let me go (they wouldn't), but it was a moot point both times. I went into active labor at 37+1 with my first, 35+6 with my second. Ideally, any time between 39-41 weeks would have been my preference.

40 weeks exactly. I hate the idea of my baby being "cheated" out of development time in utero, but I'm also perfectly happy to have them leave when time is up.

    40. I went to 42 with my first.

My water broke with DS1 at 38w5d and he was born at 39 weeks. DS2 was an RCS at 39 weeks exactly. I think for DS1 it was too early - I honestly think his dates were off and could have used another week at least....BUT we found that he had the cord around his neck at delivery and it could have been BAD if he hadn't come when he did (long failed induction, he got stuck sideways, etc). So overall no regrets but if I could have avoided all the NICU stuff for his severe jaundice and gotten him like a pound heavier that would have been nice.

DS2 was a true 39 weeker, perfect weight and was just a perfect baby. I was losing my plug and having contractions before my RCS so I don't think he would have lasted much longer anyway.

So a true 39 weeker works for me!

38/39 weeks I guess. Both of mine were late- DS1 at 40+3 I think? And DS2 we induced on my due date. After 39 weeks I am soooooo uncomfortable and mentally done. Plus they were both over 8lbs.

I had DD at 39+6, so I guess 40 weeks is ideal for me! Although this little boy is growing fast, so I wouldn't mind 38-39!

My first was 39w2d and my second was 40w exactly.

Hm my initial thoughts were early but not TOO early- maybe 38-39 weeks- bc it's so uncomfortable being huge and I always want to meet baby sooner!

But now I'm thinking maybe closer to 40weeks.. it's always nice having extra free/chill days. We don't plan too much after 37 weeks and it was nice to have some free saturdays to have a family day before the craziness of having a newborn.

This time I'd actually love to be a couple weeks early bc for some reason I'd rather have a late December bday than an early January one... 38weeks would make it xmas eve!

So I guess my answer is... it depends... hehe...

For me, anything between 39-40 weeks would be ideal. My first was 40+3 and my second was 40 exactly. I'm happy to have them in there cooking as long as possible, but once I hit my due date I'd like to be done!

@mrs.kiwi: I'm due 12/31 and I would like to go a bit early before Xmas this time too! Not thinking it'll actually happen but it'd be nice to mostly have a newborn when dd is off of school on break from those winter germs. Although.. then she's home all day!

DW had our son at 35 weeks on the dot from
PPROM. Luckily we only stayed one extra night but for any other pregnancies I would love it to be closer to 40 (not sure she'd agree :P) So stressful, he was so tiny, and now we have some developmental issues which who knows could be related to him being premature.

40 weeks is good for me! I went into labor on my due date the first time which was fine with me bc I wasn't too uncomfortable and I had zero thoughts that I was going to go early. But I know it would have been hard to wait post 40 weeks. So I'll shoot for 40 again next time (but hopefully skip the almost two days of labor before she was born).

40 weeks? I am a procrastinator so I need every moment up to the due date to get prepared but it would drive me crazy to be overdue. My first was 39+1, which was ok because he was induced and we knew to expect him then for several weeks. I pretty much went into labor on my due date with my other 2 and they were both born 40+1. Perfect for me!

40w is good for me. I was uncomfortable at the end for sure with both of mine but I didn't feel ready until right around my due date. I'm sure it would have been fine to go early but I was okay to go right up to 40w.

I had my first at 38+5 and my second at 37+3. I felt like the latter was a little too early, and I was miserable by the time I had my first. ha.

I think 37+5-38 would be perfect!

@skipra: yes I'm a procrastinator too.. I *try* to be ready by 36-37 weeks but it's nice to have those extra couple weeks bc I'm NEVER get everything I need to get ready that early lol

39 weeks was perfect with LO2. My first was 40+5 and it was miserable.

Any time in week 38 sounds great. I had my LO at 41w5d.

I felt good enough to keep working until 38w2d (though I'd wished I could stop 1-2 weeks sooner).

1-2 weeks of feeling pretty terrible (but being confident that baby was cooked) would be a massive improvement over feeling pretty terrible for 3 weeks and then extremely terrible for another 2.

My 1st was born at 40+1. I wasnt miserable and honestly was terrified to go into labor so I wasn't trying to push it.

This time I am pretty uncomfortable and think 38+3-39 weeks sounds blissful.

Well, I really wanted LO1 to be born on her due date bc it was an awesome date. She was actually born at 41+2, but I was luckily never all that uncomfortable so it was fine.

This time, assuming I feel the same way, I'd actually prefer to go to 41-41.5 again. With the way my maternity leave is set, it will put me back at work at a better time than if I go earlier.

If I have more I want to make it to 40 weeks. I'd love to not have to have a nicu stay again and think that 40 weeks would have a higher chance of coming home with me!

I was emergency induced at 39w and had a scheduled induction for a few days later. It was ideal- besides a 44 hr induction.

I went progressively earlier, 41+2 for LO1, 38+4 for LO2 and 36+2 with LO3/LO4. All were natural labors.

The twins definitely had some issues due to their prematurity and I hated going overdue so 38+4 was really nice middle ground.

38w sounds good to me! I was also extremely over being pregnant by the end but both of my babies were late! 40+1 for my first and 41+3 for my second.

@winniebee: 40 weeks is fine for me. I think the harder part is not knowing the end, more so that having the end be another 18, or a whole 2 weeks, or any measurable amount of time, at least for me.

    honeydew / 7504 posts

I was induced at 41w with both kids. I was given the option to wait the extra week with A (my 2nd) to see if I went into labor naturally, but I was in so much pain and so miserable, I went ahead with the scheduled induction at 41. Ideally, delivering at like 38 or 39 would have been nice. I hated those last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy.

40 worked for me. I delivered at 40w5d and 39w3d. I planned for 42 weeks both times so maybe it's just that it was earlier than expected both times.

    pineapple / 12053 posts

@Corduroy: I did too, at least for #1. I had appts on my due date and a few days after because I thought there was no way I was gonna go before that. Oops! I walked into my chiro appt holding my newborn! They were so surprised! It was hilarious!

I think 40w would be ideal. I went 41w with my first and 34w with my second. My second was a planned 34w RCS due to medical complications so I knew it was going to be over soon, but it was strange never getting super big like with my first.
