Back in HS a lot of my friends' parents hired cleaning ladies, and they used to HATE how their parents made them clean before they came over. Even though my parents didn't have one, I used to agree with my friends. My current bosses have a cleaning lady and I find myself cleaning before she comes over. I don't want her to think we're slobs ; ) Also, I don't want to make her job any harder than it already is. She is worth her weight in gold if you ask me!

I always lean before the cleaning lady now! I want her to spend the time really cleaning, not picking up after me! And I used to always complain to my mom about it when she made us.

When I was younger I didn't understand why my parents hardly ever had people over to our house and pretty much never had overnight guests. We used to go to other people's houses though. I am exactly the same now I'm an adult and it's because I get anxious about having guests- will they notice if the house isn't spotless? Will it be difficult to get them to leave when we're done? Will they like the food I have prepared? My Sister is the same too, it's so funny. Dh though loves to host, so I let him take charge with the food and entertaining and it helps to get me through!

They left me and my sister home alone ALL THE TIME! Even when we lived overseas. My mom was a yeller, she also sometimes threw things when mad (not at us, but still!). They made us sit at the table until we finished our dinner, etc.
Halloween always makes me remember one year when I was little that my mom said I couldn't trick or treat until I finished my meat loaf. I sat at that table FOREVER! I was pretty young so I didn't care about trick or treating really. Now I'm a vegetarian, lol

I wasn't allowed a TV or a phone in my bedroom. If I wanted to talk on the phone, I had to take the kitchen phone (with the mile long cord) and walk around the kitchen to the basement landing and close the door if I wanted privacy.

My mom would always want to call a friend's house to make sure their parents were home, unless I was just going to my bffs house. But if it was a party or something...yeah. so mortifying at the time, but I toally get it now. And really so not a big deal! Lol

@cmomma17: I had a stubborn 'won't eat my dinner in Halloween and you can't make me' year too! It was one thing my mom said that she immediately regretted. She was hardcore about following through on whatever she said, which I am infinitely grateful for now, but she said I couldn't go trick or treating unless I finished my dinner. She spent a month sewing beautiful Halloween costumes for me & my brother & it's her favorite holiday, but I wouldn't eat, so I stated home & handed out candy to all the other kids. I still love handing out candy on Halloween!

My mom always made me sit up straight . . . I can still hear her in my head *NO SLOUCHING!!!* And yanno, I constantly receive compliments on my posture (especially at work), and people always think I am taller than what I really am.

I was never allowed to have candles. Although I get why my parents had the candle rule, I am so happy that my bosses let me use them. They made my room smell so nice and they make me happy.
I also wasn't allowed to eat in my room.

Oh man, I have some childhood stories. A family friend used to say she was going to write a book about me and my dad. We butted heads a LOT when I was a teenager.

I still don't understand this one but I think it is funny now. My mom would stress about having people over and hated drop in visitors because she never felt like things were tidy enough, she was convinced that no one else left their toaster out after using it or ever had mail on their counters or dishes in the sink. I have been a nanny for a long time including for families with a full time housekeeper... Everyone does these things! Maybe not always or maybe it is something a bit different but no ones house is ready for a photo shoot everyday!
