Age 16, summer between junior and senior year.
First time getting really drunk was in college- freshman year- at age 17. It was short lived, though! I'm not really a big drinker!
ETA I forgot to answer the other part of it... Yes I think I will let my children try alcohol before 21. It will depend on the individual child's maturity. I don't want it to be taboo and foreign to them, but I also don't want to encourage binge drinking. LO won't be here til September, though, so I guess I have a looooong time to think about it!

I was in High School and driving so, 16. It was Mad Dog or Boone's Farm and oh dear was it horrible!! For some reason that didn't stop me, though....
As for my kid? I'd prefer she wait at least until college to try drinking. I will not allow her or her friends to drink in my house and expect the same from other parents.

My Mom had a Holiday Tea a few weeks before Christmas every year. One year, I think my best friend and I were 12 or 13, we mixed some Kahula with Coke. It was completely disgusting.

My dad definitely let me try his beer when I was younger, just a sip- maybe 6 or 7. Didn't have hard alcohol until I was a senior in HS,

Possibly before I ate solid food (a little liquor to soothe from teething). I've had alcohol available my whole life, so it never seemed like a big deal (or fun to secretly drink). Actually on my 21st, I didn't even finish my drink...
ETA: Just talked to DH about it, and looks like DS will try alcohol as soon as he asks (hopefully younger than 5 so he won;t like it).
