I live in the US and I used to hate when christmas came before the day after thanksgiving but now I am the cheesy mom who feels that the day after Halloween is the beginning of Xmas lite. I won't go crazy till thanksgiving but in my heart it will be beginning to look a lot like Christmas. If you celebrate christmas when does it start for you?

well i'm canadian so halloween is the last holiday before christmas for us! so usually once that has passed i'm in full on christmas mode!!! although my DH has a rule that the tree can't be set up until December 1st (but i've been pushing it up every year!).

I like how you said in your heart it will be Christmas time! I'm going to go with that. Technically, I feel like it doesn't start until after Thanksgiving, but I hate waiting that long!

I start Christmas shopping in October! But I don't start decorating or anything until after Thanksgiving.

After Thanksgiving technically. I've already purchased a number of gifts for people. I purchase throughout the year anyway. I plan to take a day off close to the holidays to mail stuff out and wrap the other stuff for the visit to my parents.

After Thanksgiving. Im okay with seeing Christmas stuff after Halloween is over, though.
I HATE seeing Christmas stuff in Aug/Sept/Oct. So annoying. There are TWO holidays before you, Christmas! Stop being an attention whore and wait your turn!

I definitely start thinking about it, singing the occasional Christmas song, and even putting simple white candles in the windows before Thanksgiving - but I still like to celebrate Thanksgiving first, without really going full-on Christmas mode until the day after. I love the tradition of spending that Friday or weekend after Thanksgiving putting up the tree, decking out the mantles, and watching a few Christmas movies.

I start listening to Christmas music at any point after summer when I start to get grumpy 
It just puts me in a better mood! I start shopping as soon as I see the first thing I think will make a great gift. I work on my Christmas list all year long, and give it to my mom & MIL when they ask for it (some years, that's August. This year, it was over the weekend). Decorations go up the week before Thanksgiving because we travel for Thanksgiving and I like for the house to be ready to go when we get home.
To me, the decorations and Christmas music are part of how I celebrate Thanksgiving. November - December are "the holidays" and it doesn't bother me in the least when they overlap & combine. But there are plenty of people who think I'm blasphemous in these beliefs

As a Canadian, I celebrate Thanksgiving in October - after that, I feel like I can start to celebrate the Christmas season (even if it's just at home)

I am not in Canada, and there are plenty of holidays between Halloween and Christmas, but I don't care! Once Halloween is over, it's Christmas music ALL. THE. TIME. Sorry, DH!

Normally not until Thanksgiving weekend. But since LO will be born about 10 days earlier than Thanksgiving this year, it is highly likely that our decorations will all go up Nov 1 this year. I've never been that early about it, ever.

I looooove Christmas and I start getting in the "Christmas spirit" after Halloween. I start listening to Christmas music and putting up decorations in November. I'm sure it's annoying to some, but oh well

We usually decorate for both Christmas and Chanukah mid-November. I already have finished most of my gift buying so really it's just somewhere to store the presents until they're doled out.

I decorate sometime after Thanksgiving, but I guess the Christmas season starts whenever I start feeling festive! Usually sometime in mid-November. I don't mind Christmas decor or music starting early, but it does surprise me a bit.

Not til Thanksgiving has passed. Last week the mall had Christmas wreaths up...made my blood boil. It isn't even Halloween yet! It doesn't get me in the Christmas spirit, it just pisses me off to be honest.

It's been tradition for me to put up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. So I guess that is when the Christmas season officially begins in our house!

I don't decorate till after Thanksgiving!
Although this year, we might put our tree up Thanksgiving Day, depending on DHs work travel schedule. We will be gone Thanksgiving weekend and if DH is gone the next week. I don't want to wait till the next weekend. I want to enjoy it as long as possible.

November here! My local radio station starts the Christmas music on Saturday, and I am SO EXCITED! I've already started shopping, but we'll start our Christmas festivities in November. I'm going to TRY to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate.

@Caly: This. Christmas decorations up in October just ticks me off and I avoid going to the mall until after Thanksgiving.
We typically decorate for Christmas over Thanksgiving weekend or the next depending on what is going on.

I'm in Canada where Thanksgiving is in October, so putting Christmas decorations up right after Thanksgiving would be too soon imo. We put up our Christmas decorations the last few days of November or the beginning of December.
Only 8 more Fridays until Christmas!

We don't decorate until after the American Thanksgiving. That said, I'm on a cleaning spree this afternoon during naptime and am listening to Christmas music. In October. SIGH.

December the 1st, we don't have thanksgiving and Halloween is mostly for kids. We have bonfire night on the 5th November but that doesn't involve decorating so no decorating of any sort till December for usuntil LO is old enough to have a pumpkin for Halloween.

Technically, we don't start decorating/playing music/watching movies until the day after Thanksgiving. But I'm already thinking about it and have been since August!

Well, coming from a religious perspective, Advent season starts when it starts, usually Sunday after Thanksgiving. But Christmas season doesn't start until Christmas itself... I do know some people who take this very seriously and hate to hear Christmas music in advance of Christmas itself (eg. Joy to the World = Christmas as opposed to O Come O Come Emmanuel = Advent). The feast of Christmas then continues for 8 days (an "octave") and the season even beyond that, into mid January or even February. Most people don't make that distinction, I realize. I never really mind lights and trees and whatnot, but it bothers me more when people complain that decorations should be put away soon after New Years, because the season's technically only just begun!

My mom starts right after halloween and it annoys me to no end. I'm not huge on christmas, which people keep telling me will change when my LO comes home. But I do all my shopping thanksgiving weekend so I guess that's when it starts for me.
