We just found out we're expecting and wanted to wait before announcing. Today we were with another couple and my four year old yelled out let's buy something for the new baby! I tried to cover it up and said "sure, let's buy something for your baby doll!". She says "No! The baby in your belly!!!" and kept pointing to my belly. At that point I fessed up to our friends. We laughed about it but how do I prevent my 4 year old from spilling the beans again?? I did have a talk with her after and said let's keep the baby a secret between just us and daddy. She says ok but then later on yelled out in front of everyone "mommy, I won't talk about our secret!!!" Doh!

I don't think you'll be able to! We aren't telling ours for a while because we know they'll tell everyone!

@winniebee: lol exactly. We told them when we felt comfortable with them saying something. But even then, we said to keep it a secret. Luckily they kept it, but they were itching to tell their classmates and would ask me often if they could tell lol.

I'm surprised we didn't have to deal with this since my daughter is a total oversharer. I actually assumed she had told her teachers, so I didn't mention it to them for quite a while. We all shocked that DD hadn't spilled the beans when I told them! I don't think there's much you can do to encourage them to be discrete, though.
