we have our very first ultrasound next week, and we're so excited to see our little peanut. we were planning on recording the ultrasound, so we could share the sweet little heartbeat with our families. i called to make sure we could bring our camera, and got a big fat no. why not? i've watched tons of u/s vidoes on youtube, so i know other people have done it. we have no intentions of taping the nurse, just the baby.
i'm confused why we can't record our own baby -- anyone have any insight?

I don't see a reason why you couldn't. I would call them back and ask why. Personally, I would still tape it with my cell phone because that's something so special that you'll want to keep. I hope they change their minds.

Just a guess, but maybe the same reason some drs don't allow video of delivery, because they could be used if someone were to file a suit against them. Or maybe they don't want people recording in case they need to give bad news. Maybe bring it and ask the person doing the US once they've started, they might be more flexible than the person in the office telling you it's not allowed.

My office records them and gives you a DVD at the end. Except my office screwed up the whole process and wound up giving me someone else's DVD and never actually recorded mine. Annoying!!!
I know the fact that I had someone else's DVD is a huge HIPPA violation, so maybe the same goes for your situation. They can't have random medical records out and about in the world, because of privacy laws, although what's the difference between that and a printout of a picture? I'm not really sure.

My doctor's office doesn't allow recordings either. It's for liability reasons.

Our hospital had signs everywhere saying "NO VIDEO ALLOWED IN ULTRASOUND ROOMS" and they also didnt allow video during a birth. I had a c-section and they said absilutely no video in there or for a vaginal birth. Has to do with liability for the births, but I dont know why not for an ultrasound

@highwire: I would guess that the difference between video & still would be that if another dr were to view the video & notice something that the initial dr did not investigate further it could be used as evidence for a malpractice suit. OB has such insane rates of malpractice suits, they probably have to do everything they can to protect themselves.

@mrs. bird: That makes sense. My OB actually doesn't even do any of the ultrasounds except for the first one. He refers all his patients out to a perinatologist to do the NT screen and the anatomy scan. Probably for the reasons you mentioned.

We weren't allowed to tape either. However, our tech had a crazy coughing fit and left the room so we quickly taped with our iphone.

We asked the tech if we could video even just the gender reveal at our anatomy scan, but she said it was not allowed. I'm guessing it's for the liability reasons, and every clinic is different that way. They're always really generous with pictures though

had our anatomy scan this am- they told us the same thing that it wasn't allowed. thankfully she gave us a dvd of our lil boy

hm. We never asked to record video but we did record the sound (via voice memo on iPhone).

We went to an independent ultrasound place, and they gave us a DVD. It's weird to me, because at our very first one, they actually told my husband to get his phone out and at least take a picture.
ETA: there's no sound on the DVD.

We had our ultrasounds at thr hospital and there were signs posted everywhere that pictures and videos were not allowed. We tried to ask the tech and always got a no (I had two 20 weeks scans cause the first time LO didn't cooperate and they couldn't get all the head measurements). DH and I were so psyched and had a charged camera all ready, so we were really disappointed. They did give us printouts but I was really hoping to get it on video, especially when they announced the sex. Bummer.
