I want to buy the baby (she will be 8 months old) some new outfits (instead of hand-me-downs) and maybe a Radio Flyer Classic walker or a Zany Zoo cube.
I don't know what to get LO (almost 2)...her bday and Christmas are a few days apart!

I had a coupon for a toy store and I bought Magna-Tiles and had it wrapped up so that I wouldn't feel tempted to give them to her right away so right now it's hidden in her closet and I plan to give that to her for Christmas. Other than that...I don't have any plans to buy her anything else...I'm sure she'll get spoiled by her grandparents and uncles.

We will probably get him a couple Christmas gifts. He will be 9 months.
His grandparents will probably spoil him, but I'm trying to tell them to not go overboard as we don't need our house filled with stuff.

We were just talking about this last night! LO will be just under 6mos at the time, and I know she is going to get completely spoiled by our family. I might buy her a couple board books or a small toy to open, but I think she'll be just fine in the present department even without our help!

We're going to get her a balance bike to this Christmas (though she probably won't use it until summer time) We're asking family for clothes in bigger sizes, books or $$ for her education fund. Girlfriend has WAAAYYY too many toys.

Her bday is one month before Christmas. We'll get her a PBK Anywhere chair for one and a Radio Flyer for the other. That's it though. Our families will spoil her and she doesn't know the difference anyway!

I plan on buying Christmas gifts for the kids, but I'm not sure what to get.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@Rubies: I want to buy those now so *I* can play with them!
hostess / eggplant / 11068 posts
@autumnlove: Seriously, the Magna-Tiles aren't really for DD...I just want to get my hands on them to see what *I* can make! LOL! I ended up getting the smaller kit (32-piece set, I think?) as opposed to the 100-piece. I kind of wish I got the 100-piece but I know that 32 is enough for DD.

We will be trying to follow the 4 gift rule... I'm sure she'll be spoiled by the grandparents though!

She will only be 4 months old but I can't skip buying her gifts! I have no idea what a 4 month old would use though. We have enough clothes (I think)

@autumnlove: I was wondering what other moms did whose LO's birthday was around Christmas. Owen's 1st bday is 12/28 so we are trying to figure out how we are going to handle gifts....

We're planning on buying him a play kitchen (he'll be 16.5 months).

My son's birthday is 9 days before Christmas, so I still treat them as two separate occasions. He will get gifts for both. Since he will be three, his big gift from us will be a balance bike for birthday and I am still undecided about Christmas.

@petunia354: We didn't buy LO anything last year but everyone in our family purchased two gifts for her...

I want to get him a PBK Anywhere Chair. He'll be 6 months. Probably books and clothes, too. He is the first grandchild on both sides, so he's going to be spoiled. My mom already started shopping for him.

@sslm: Is that the want, need, wear, read rule?
@petunia354: @autumnlove: @looch: My birthday is around Christmas as well and my advice is to ALWAYS make it separate! Don't do combined gifts!! And don't use Christmas wrapping paper for the birthday presents! And don't give Christmas-themed gifts for the birthday either!

@prettylizy: I'm thinking about a balance bike too for DD... especially after reading Mrs. Cowgirl's post on it!
pomegranate / 3863 posts
@Adira: LOL!! Good advice!! I wouldn't do any of those things but you never know about family members. I'll be passing these tips along
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@Adira: Haha, you don't have to tell me! My inlaws are really bad about this, but since this year we will be at their place for both events, they can't combine! I am dying to see what they do!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@petunia354: Both my parents' birthdays are in December so I think they had to deal with that enough that they NEVER did any of those things with me! I always felt like my birthday was it's own special day, which was nice. It felt equal to any other birthday at any other time of the year! EXCEPT that it was during winter break so I never was in school during it and never got the "It's your birthday!" attention at school, which was a bummer. BUT I also always had my birthday off, so that was nice.

We bought a kitchen like the Laugh and Learn House at a consignment sale for $8. Then will get her one other gift, so she has something to unwrap. I figure she will be 9 months, won't remember and is going to get WAY to many toys from our families.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: That's what spurred me too! I can't think of a single other thing she is going to need in the coming months that I want to spend money on.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@prettylizy: Uh huh...I'm sure you will find something! HAHAHA
pineapple / 12053 posts
@sslm: we're going to do the same and hopefully will pass that onto the grandparents as well! her birthday is 2.5 weeks after christmas!
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
We'll get something for her. Her birthday is the day before so we won't get too much for her, plus she'll only be 1.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
@Adira: yep!!!
@birdofafeather: DH and I plan to follow it for each other too
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@sslm: Are you going to try to get the grandparents to follow that rule? Or is that just something you'll be doing yourselves?
pineapple / 12566 posts
We definitely will. DS is getting a baby sister right before Christmas. We don't really celebrate Christmas, but we do give gifts. DS's birthday is just a few days after Christmas and we treat that as a bigger deal than Christmas. For months, he has been saying "we should buy a bike with pedals for my birthday" so that's what he's going to get!
pear / 1769 posts
I already have two toys I bought for her when they were on sale so I am leaving it at that. Her first birthday is earlier that month and I have two presents for it as well. I have also told my husband he can pick out a present if he wants to.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
@Adira: just ourselves I'm not a big fan of telling people what to do, especially when it comes to gifts! They wouldn't listen anyways haha.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Yup! We already started. She doesn't get many toys unless it's a holiday or her birthday. I do buy her books often though.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@sslm: haha, okay, thanks! I kind of want to tell my in-laws what to do because they go crazy OVERBOARD with gifts, but maybe I should just try to be gracious and not do that, haha.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@autumnlove: I don't know what you're talking about ***guilty face***
papaya / 10473 posts
We're doing the want/need/wear/read rule. If grandparents ask what to get him, it will be books, wooden Montessori toys, or a 529 contribution. I don't want my parents going overboard!
squash / 13764 posts
yup! I think I'm going to get him a rocking horse for the holidays: http://www.amazon.com/Stork-Craft-Rocking-Horse-Oak/dp/B000GE8VJW/ref=sr_1_5?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1380567481&sr=1-5&keywords=rocking+horse
For his 2nd bday, I plan to get him a balance bike!
pomegranate / 3768 posts
DD's birthday and christmas are only a few days apart too! I will be getting her gifts for both, but not sure what yet. Our place is small so we don't have the space for big items.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
The entire tree is going to be covered in gifts. I've been buying things all year, when on sale and used, in anticipation.
