I'll always make more

DH always made more than me up until two weeks ago. With my last promotion, I now earn more. We always expected this to be the case. I have a higher earning potential in the long run.

I work at home, but I wanted to answer. I make more than my DH. He's in the first few years of his career, and he has many years to "climb the ladder". I run my own business, I'm "popular" (ew) in my field, and my income reflects that. Eventually, I'd like to go back to school to become a midwife, and at that point, I'll be making significantly less than him.

I am a year senior to my husband in the same occupation, and I make less than him. I make less than my male colleagues at my current workplace.

I make half what DH makes. We both have full time office jobs. His is more demanding, but not doubly demanding.

I have been working since I was 22. My husband got his first job when he was 33 after a long stint in graduate school. We work in related industries but with very different specializations. I make more than he does because I have a lot more years of experience and I also work in a more lucrative part of the industry.

I make more than many of my male colleagues, but I have more seniority than most of them. So, I didn't answer the second part of the poll because there isn't really anyone who is at the same level as me.

I've made more until just last month, when he finally got a big raise and passed me. I'm a teacher, too.

DH makes double what I make. He is an engineer, and I am a corporate accountant. He also has a master's degree, and I only have my bachelor's.

I have no idea what my male coworkers make.

I make less but I definitely deserve more than i make. Men in my field definitely make more than me.

DH makes twice what I do, but he's older and been in the workforce much longer. I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure I make the same amount as males at the same level as me.

I make less than DH. But I'm a teacher, and he's an engineer. So totally different fields...

I usually do make the same as (the very very few) men in my schools with the same experience and degree/college credits. But that's because most schools use a salary schedule where salary is determined only by experience and what degree/credits beyond your bachelors/masters you have. At least, the schools I've worked in!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: The longer explanation is that males get better work (usually from senior males) with better paying clients, then they bring in more money, which results in them making more money. You start out about the same, but it diverges about 3 or so years in, and with very few exceptions, all of the female lawyers I know in private practice that are my year make significantly less than their male counterparts or else do not practice privately (and sometimes do not practice at all). Add to that maternity leave and child care responsibilities and the gap just widens. My husband made 25K more than me a year behind me before I went on mat leave, now he makes 80k more than I do, so it's a very substantial amount as well. We do the exact same job in the same area. It is depressing, and a real problem especially in traditional male dominated workplaces such as this.

Well...I have a short and long answer. The short version is that DH makes almost 3x what I make.

The long answer is that we are in very different fields (me, public education; him IT in finance) so there's no way I'd be making as much. BUT there are studies that have been done where even male teachers end up making more than female teachers. Some of that is because (sometimes) they are more willing to take on extra responsibilities for extra pay---extra extracurriculars, coaching a sport, being a faculty advisor for a student group. But there was also an interesting case study done where it showed that men are more often pushed/invited into leadership positions whereas women of the same years of experience were not.

For example, if a man has been teaching for 8-10 years, people start asking when he's going to move into administration. And women aren't typically asked the same thing. Which is why there are always more male administrators even though there are way more women teachers.

So that makes me grrrrrrrrr a little.

@blackbird: Here all of the government legal departments are full of women, as are all the in-house legal positions, except for some in traditional fields such as oil and gas (because they don't really hire women to the same extent). Staying in private practice unless you do not have a family or are not the primary caregiver of a family and do not have an internal conflict about that guarantees that you will have a frustrating, underpaid, tainted career. And I actually like my job, lol! But it does burn that I KNOW that I am getting the short end of the stick in terms of pay and work quality, and that it will only get worse.
