Otherwise perfect "forever house" with a huge lot in a great school district. It's priced accordingly. Would you do it?

heck yeah! hard to find a perfect home and fixing a kitchen increases home value and shouldn't be so hard to do, if you hire the right people, I guess lol.

I wouldn't just b/c the thought of remodeling and all that work overwhelms and stresses me out to no end. I prefer brand new construction

Ya, hate my kitchen right now! Saving for a remodel...
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I guess it depends what you mean by "new." Is there something that could be salvaged?
Our house needs a new kitchen, for now, we've decided to just upgrade the 15 year old appliances when they stop working. I am not certain we'd get back a significant investment in a high end kitchen in our hood. The functionality is fine, there would be no need to reroute plumbing, for example.

I would but keep in mind that kitchens are sooo expensive to remodel!!! (depending on what you want obviously)
pineapple / 12793 posts
Yup.
In fact I'd never buy a house that has a renovated kitchen. I'm soooo picky about my kitchens.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Heck yes! No home's kitchen could possibly come the way we want it so updating a kitchen is to be expected.
We completely gutted and renovated our kitchen. It is a HUGE expense so make sure to factor that into sale price.
@septca: PM me if you want to talk more about how much mine cost us. Keeping in mind my DH did everything minus build the cabinets and mine the stone!
pomegranate / 3401 posts
Yes! Definitely. Then you can have it exactly how you want to use it!
nectarine / 2771 posts
Definitely! As long as the price of the home reflected the current kitchen status, and we had it in the budget to remodel. I would actually prefer that, so I could make it exactly how I wanted!
apricot / 287 posts
YES! If it has everything else you want. That way you can remodel the kitchen to exactly your preferences.

@pinkcupcake: I would *love* to build a custom house, but it's a non-starter for DH. And, really, he's right. We are not very good as doing housework together - just very different decision-making skills.
@oliviaoblivia: This is kind of what I am thinking. I see all these brand-new, gorgeous kitchens that just really aren't my taste. I like the idea of being able to put in exactly what I want (which would be pretty simple and neutral).
@looch: The bones and layout are really good, but the house was built in 1975 and the kitchen is original, so it would need new everything... cabinets, all appliances except the refrigerator, lighting, fixtures... I would probably even want to re-do the floor (tile) because it looks dated. But the house is in a really high-end neighborhood so I think it would be worthwhile. All of the other houses for sale in the area have really upscale kitchens... Subzero, Wolf, all the bells and whistles. I guess what is holding me back is that I would love to have all those things (I love to cook!), but I know DH and I would never spend that kind of money on a remodel. But I guess if we are going to live there for 30+ years, all that matters is that it is what we want - we don't have to put in super high-end stuff just for resale...

I wanted a house that needed a new kitchen! Remodeling our kitchen to suit our taste really made our home feel like ours. It cost way more than our realtor led us to believe though!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@septca: I think you can go midrange with appliances....my mom has a Wolf stove and she actually regrets it, because it is just too hot for a kitchen stove!
I started a thread for kitchen remodel pricing.
apricot / 355 posts
Sure. If you can live with it in the meantime, I would have no issue saving up for the perfect kitchen remodel, especially in an otherwise "forever" home. Then you get a custom kitchen!
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Yeah, we did! Well, our house needed new everything! We bought it a a great price, gutted it and renovated everything! I love living in a house that screams us (ok well me, haha).
grapefruit / 4923 posts
yes! and i'm totally curious what house you are looking at!
i'm watching you,
your stalker
nectarine / 2274 posts
Yes, location is more important to me. Can always remodel down the road.
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@littlek: I'm sure we could... the current kitchen is clean and workable, it's just really dated and ugly. But I would rather do it right away - the house is priced accordingly, so I think we could swing it. The bathrooms need some cosmetic upgrades (new fixtures, etc.), but that can totally wait.
pomelo / 5469 posts
Definitely--kitchen would be the least of my priorities, just so long as it was functional.
bananas / 9227 posts
Absolutely! This is basically my house. My only suggestion is to remodel the kitchen ASAP. We didn't do it right away and now it's been set aside.
eggplant / 11824 posts
If it's priced accordingly; hell yes! I mean, the chances of finding a place you don't want to do *something* to are pretty slim, right? Kitchens can get $$$$, but if you know that going in; it would be a non-issue for me!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
If it's priced low to compensate for the lack of kitchen, heck yes! I can NEVER find a kitchen that I am in love with. I could easily spend 85K on a kitchen reno. Drool.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
Definitely! We gutted the kitchen in our old house and it was AMAZING to have a kitchen designed to our wants and needs. As long as the house is priced to allow for the renovations, it sounds like a dream situation to me!
pomegranate / 3895 posts
100% yes. I like very specific features in a kitchen, so I want to design/plan it myself anyway!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
For an extensive remodel, only if the remodel could be completed prior to move in.
watermelon / 14206 posts
yeah, sure...as long as the price of the house reflected that. It was something that DH and I were open to when house hunting.
honeydew / 7916 posts
I'd totally do it if the price reflected the need and you could afford to do it!
@looch: We have a Wolf dual-fuel and just keep the heat turned very low for everything. It works great!
pear / 1879 posts
Absolutely! I have never visited a home whose kitchen was perfect for us and I would never let this be a deal-breaker. We still have some work to do on our kitchen but who knows if/when it will ever happen!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
As long as it's priced accordingly and everything else was perfect, yes. Especially if I had some flexibility on staying in my current living situation for a little while and just going ahead and fully remodeling the kitchen before we even moved in.
