@oliviaoblivia: I agree - we're in the house-hunting process now and I definitely wouldn't mind renovating something to my taste rather than paying more for something new that I don't really love.

@septca Also wanted to say that our Reno was about 10% of the purchase price of our home. Ours isn't super high end, but normal for our area (GE cafe appliances and semi custom painted wood cabinets). We paid for the appliances and cabinets on a no APR credit cards that we paid for over the following year so that we had a larger down payment for the home. Good luck!

yes, but only if the kitchen space worked for me. if the layout worked and we are just updating cabinets, counters, appliances, i'd buy it in a heartbeat, but if it needed walls taken down, plumbing moved etc, i would avoid it just because that would be too much for us to cover in addition to the downpayment and i'd want it done right away (if i didn't do it right away, it would never get done)

Yes...we did and I loved being able to make it my taste. Many homes we looked at had been remodeled recently and I would've wanted to change them too, which seemed like a waste. No regrets here!

Yes! Then you can choose what works best for you. We updated our kitchen. No new appliances but new counters, paint and some built ins.

@septca: Was just thinking about it and even if what you see in neighborhood resales now is Wolf/Sub-Zero, you should just put whatever appliances you like in there if this is your long-term home. That stuff is only appealing to buyers if it's relatively new!
