Eh, a little but I'd probably still go. I kind of feel bad for people when no one offers to throw them a shower.

Yes, I do think it's in poor taste, but I would give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe nobody offered to host? I feel like a baby is such a happy thing and it should be celebrated... if nobody offered to host it, I can see why they would still want to do it... or maybe the people that would have hosted it couldn't afford it, or didn't have enough space, etc. Whatever the reason, I'd probably still go but not buy anything too extravagent. I don't have a problem with people registering for a lot, as long as there are a range of price points. If not, I'd buy something off the registry that's in my budget and/or give a gift card.

i would go. i rarely look at who is hosting!

Self hosting events don't really bother me. Sometimes no one offers.

The registry also doesn't bother me. As a first time parent to be, I can't just rely on hand-me-downs and I have zero baby items to call our own.

Nope as in it wouldn't bother me and I would go. I look at a baby shower as a celebration and a joyous occasion. What if no one stepped up to throw them a shower? Do they/the baby not deserve to be celebrated just bc no one stepped up?

I agree that maybe there is no one to host it for them. We just moved to a new city, hundreds of miles away from family and friends. If we get pregnant soon, no one will throw us one as we have zero friends here.

Self-hosting wouldn't bother me, mostly because I don't know the etiquette for this stuff very well!

@Rubies: We invited ALOT (DH has a huge family) and then had may 1/4 of the invitees show up... I think generally the rule is 1/2 show up? I can't remember. I do know that having a shower & then almost noone showing up sucks though so I caution on the side of large guestlist. *shrugs shoulders*

It would annoy me a little but I would go and bring a regular shower gift if I liked the couple. If I don't like them that much I would skip

Aww man. Now all I can think is that they didnt have anyone offer to host for her and that makes me sad I'd go. I never look at who's hosting anyway. Everyone deserves to get some new things for a first baby! I don't think it's gift grabby

Self-hosting is common here in Mexico, although it always gives me pause! Are they from a different culture where maybe that's more OK?

@MamaMoose: The parent to be sets up the registry. Even when a host distributes the registry info to guests the parent to be had a (big) hand in inviting the parent is still soliciting gifts. I don't see a difference.

I'd totally go! My first thought: maybe they are trying something new ... By having a co-ed shower, they are already switching up the norm. Then, they probably were just excited to register for things. Maybe it'll be a blast!

I'd go. I never pay attention to who hosts and honestly, I don't care. I go to baby showers to celebrate the couple and new arrival. I mean, unless there's a note not to bring gifts, aren't all showers technically gift-grabby? If I'm going to a shower, I'm bringing a gift. If someone threw me a shower and I received no gifts, I'd honestly be surprised! Haha.

I would still go.

When's the shower? You're so close to your due date.. I'd just get them a gift and pass on the shower!

I would go. A dear friend of mine offered to host my shower, but she was also in a bad spot financially and I felt really bad for her spending the money. The shower was held at my apartment, and she contributed a lot of the food. I'm not really sure what the proper etiquette is. One guest, who is no longer a friend, made a very snide comment as she left, something like "thanks for hosting your own shower". And it definitely wasn't a gift grab, I think 12 people were invited.
