I would go and give them the benefit of the doubt if you feel they are people who aren't into the material things or that kind of people. My sister hosted my baby shower at our house since she lives across the country and I registered for just about everything you can imagine only b/c having to return or exchange things while in my late third trimester was not fun. The worst is getting something you don't need and without a gift receipt which we did receive but not a lot of, thankfully. I just felt like I was wasting their money on items like that. I probably gave those gifts away to other pregnant friends who wanted it. I know that sounds bad, but I would rather someone use it than for me to just let it sit there and forget about. Also, since all baby places have a completion programs they could also be hoping to take advantage of that as well.
Now if someone already had a baby and is expecting another baby of the same gender and throwing a sprinkle.... that's a different story, I think! My friend offered to throw me one and I kindly declined b/c I didn't want her to spend the money, especially since I was having another boy born in the same season as my oldest. I told her that I would be happy if all the girls got together for a last time brunch before baby #2 arrived. That was so much more fun!

honestly, I don't see how that is any more "gift grabby" than a shower that someone else "hosts"for you. I mean, either way you're setting up your own registry, right?
I didn't have a big shower (like, 12 people), they're just not really a big thing here. I didn't even have a registry!
so, yes, I would definitely still go and take a gift!

I'd go if I was going to give a gift anyways. If they aren't close enough, then probably not.
