I have always lived in two story homes. I'm not sure how I feel about my bedroom being on the first floor. If we lived in a ranch house, I may need to get a security system and put sensors on the bedroom windows!!

I don't think I could. I'm just too paranoid to have ground level bedrooms.

We live in one now. I'd always lived in two stories before and I'm not a super fan of ranch houses. Security really isn't a concern to me, but I don't like that my bedroom is so accessible when there are guests over. I feel like I need to have the whole house guest ready instead of just the common areas.

Wow. I dont' know how I would feel about having my kids on a different floor/level than me. Most of the two story homes we saw were the master on the first floor and all other upstairs.

I've never thought of security being a problem with a ranch home, honestly I think it's safer because I would be able to hear someone better on ground level.

I always lived in ranch style growing up, but love my two story house now
The only reason I wouldn't live in one story is esthetics - I hate the way they look from the outside!

I've only lived in one story homes and love it!! Never thought of security being an issue, but we do have an alarm.

Ranch houses are what I prefer! Stairs don't do it for me at all. Those seem more dangerous to me than an intruder bothering me on my first floor bedroom.

I've only ever lived in a one story and currently live in a ranch. I like the way 2 story houses look from the outside, but I do not want anything to do with carrying crap upstairs. Every time we stay somewhere with two stories, I eventually end saying. "Thank goodness we only have one floor!"

I live in a ranch now. Honestly, I don't love it, especially how accessible the whole house is to guests. But at the moment, two weeks post-C-section, I'm very happy with it!!

I'd love to live in a ranch/1 story! I'd only consider a 2 story if they laundry was upstairs too. I loathe carrying laundry up and down the stairs.

I grew up in a two story how, so to me, having stairs makes it feel like a real home vs temporary housing (like an apartment or condo). I know that's not super logical. But I do like the idea of living space downstairs, bedrooms up.
My parents' house has the master and two small bedrooms downstairs, the rest up, so they had the youngest kids right next to them, and the older kids moved up to the bigger bedrooms upstairs when they were old enough (I'm one of 5 so plenty of kids/bedrooms going on).
I live in a ground floor apartment, so I already have any security risks going on and feel fine with it. But, if DH isn't home, I'm always glad that the dog is there.

I love in one now and it doesn't bother me. I grew up living in both. We will probably get a 2-story next because it allows for more space and a split floorplan, but I've never had any security issues with it.

I live in one at the moment and I have never thought about security! I hardly ever even remember to lock the doors... It truly isn't a concern in my neighborhood. I've left the garage door wide open overnight at least twice haha
But if I did have two stories, I would probably want all the bedrooms upstairs.

I prefer ranch for a couple reasons 1) I have really bad knees, so going up and downstairs is difficult and 2) I like the idea of having my kids on the same level when they are young. Security isn't an issue with me in the area we will be living.
watermelon / 14206 posts
I only like ranches. DH is the same, which is part of the reason we're having difficulty buying a home. They're more energy efficient, and I can keep an eye on kids when they're playing in their bedrooms easier. Plus, with our dogs it gives them more space with it spread out.
We don't have security issues because of the dogs...they're both large and very loud when anyone comes near the house. It's the best alarm system we could ask for.

i've only ever lived in 2 story homes too (apts not included of course hehe) -- i guess i would be ok with ranch style but i don't think any houses are built like that here! anyway never seen one!

I prefer a one level home because stairs are such a pain in the booty! I'd get a security system though and the layout would have to be perfect in order for me to want to buy.
We live in a one floor 2150 sq ft apt and I looooove not having stairs--especially with 2 LOs

Ranch houses aren't that common here, unless they are really old, so I would not want to live in one.

We live in a ranch with a finished basement, and I really like it. I never clean the bedrooms when we have company, I just shut the door. No security concerns here.
I HATE split level homes though! Too many steps and everything's chopped up.

I live in a ranch style now but I grew up in a multi story home. I like it so far! LO loves crawling everywhere!
pomegranate / 3580 posts
We live in a ranch style home and I've never thought about security being an issue. We're looking to buy right now and most of the houses we saw were two story with the master downstairs and the rest upstairs - we thought that with older kids that would be okay, but since we're just starting to TTC it could be difficult to have kids on the other floor.

We have a ranch styles and have never felt unsafe because of that. I like everything being on the same level.

I prefer ranches over multiple level homes. Then again, security has never been an issue in the places that I've lived. When we buy, it'll more than likely be a single level so that my mom could move in with us if she ever needed to. She's in the process of buying a new home now and is only considering single levels since she doesn't want to navigate stairs when she gets older.

I've always lived in a ranch style home. I've so always had a security system, too-as I would in any home. I dislike stairs and two level homes except for basements
grapefruit / 4136 posts
I've lived in 2 story, ranch, and split level. As a midwesterner all I really care about is that there is a basement (tornado sirens at least a couple times a year). I think there are good/bad things about all styles.
I don't ever want a split level again though, it's so hard with a LO who is starting to learn to crawl/walk when everything is on a different level.
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
Growing up, I lived in one-story, two-story and split level homes. I will only live in one-story houses that have a split floorplan (master on the other side of the house from the other bedrooms). I just can't do the stairs with my knee anymore. And, with that kind of floorplan, it keeps the noise down as the kids get older.

I've lived in a ranch, two story, apartment and now a ranch with a bonus room.
I love it! I would always have a security system in any home, I'm not sure where the idea that two or more floors mean you are safer? If your upstairs and someone breaks in, you aren't getting out without a two story jump.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
I've lived in a ranch house nearly my entire life. The only time I haven't is in this current house - which is a one story but not a ranch style - and when I was living in a dormitory for college. The new house we're hoping to move into is two stories and I'm in your reverse situation. I don't see how I'm going to be able to sleep at night knowing someone could break in downstairs and come upstairs! With a one story house, you hear everything. I don't know about a two story house.

I've always lived in a multi-level, including now - we're in a three story townhouse. I'd much prefer a ranch!
nectarine / 2085 posts
I like 1 level homes. Stairs in most 2 level houses are too steep, narrow, and unattractive, in my view. Plus, with small children, or older adults, they're a hazard.
The curb appeal of a ranch depends on the occupant's tastes. I've seen some gorgeous ranches and some hideous ones, but thats true of multi-levels, too.
As for security, I feel that the risks are similar and dependent on your neighborhood. In other emergencies, like a fire, I'd feel safer in a 1level, because there is a greater likelihood that you could safely escape on your own.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
Yep. Live in one now. Not counting the basement even though it has sliding doors to the backyard. I never feel unsafe. We are going to get an alarm thought just cause DH travels so much.
nectarine / 2039 posts
We call them 'bungalow' homes here. I totally would live in them. But then again I live in a rural area. I always like the bedroom situated in the most 'private' setting of the house, whatever that means for the house situation.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
My DH prefers ranch to multi-story. He says that since we live in CA, where earthquakes are prevalent, he feels safer in a 1 story home. Also, he says that if you have more than 1 level, whatever you are looking for/need is always on the other level.

I have never lived in anything except a ranch. Our current home has a basement though so our first floor is a bit raised which makes me feel a little more safe, but otherwise it doesn't concern me.
