I'm trying to decide if I want to do a package of birth photos or if I want to do newborn photos, but I don't think I want to spend the money to do both. Which would you rather have - the moments of the birth, or newborn photos?

Newborn! In my case the birth photos would have been useless since I had an emergency C section as soon as I was admitted to the hospital. They don't allow anyone into the OR except for the spouse.

I wish we had birth photos! I don't remember hardly anything about the birth and DH took like 2 pics.

Newborn professionals for me. Our Doula will take some photos during the birth. Just to have some special moments captured. (None of my hoo-ha though - or anywhere down there!)

Newborn. I wouldn't think twice about hanging newborn pictures around the house. I can't say the same about birth pictures.

I'm a newborn photographer, so I got that covered. I'd love to have a birth photographer!

BIRTH for sure! You'll get some great newborn shots of them all wrapped up & swaddled anyways. The raw emotion at that moment just cannot be duplicated but is so quickly forgotten. I STILL get sad that we didn't get birth photos. =/

Newborn for sure. We had the nurses take some pics right after LO was born and they're great, but I spend way more time looking at LO's newborn photos!

Newborn. I wouldn't have wanted anybody in during the birth. DH took a few pics and those are fine for me.

Birth. I booked our birth photographer months ago, and I'm very excited about getting those photos.
I would suggest asking your photographer about a package deal, telling her you don't have much to spend but you'd like both and maybe she'll set up a deal for you.
I got $200 off birth photography just by asking and explaining my situation.

Newborn for sure. Birth photography freaks me out. I didn't want any more people in the room than absolutely necessary.

I have zero interest in reliving the time around birth. I looked and felt like absolute hell. I would definitely rather have newborn photos. I'm happy with a few snapshots from then, our nurses were more than happy to snap a few for us.

My mother is a wonderful amateur photographer, so she took pictures during my labor and just after we arrived in the recovery room after my c-section. The emotions of birth, like someone said-- is what I wanted to remember forever. With how exhausted I was and how mentally fried I was by the end of the birth (I hadn't slept in over 30 hours by the time Toddler X was born)-- I *need* those pictures to remember. Also, along with my wedding day, it was the most profound, life-changing day of my life... yeah, I want to memorialize that.
I looked at a tutorial for newborn photos, and took them myself at home. A photographer would have done better. I have so many photos to remember those early days with my son... but without my mom to take pictures of the labor and the hours just after my son's birth, I probably wouldn't remember much. They aren't pictures I display, but I put them in a MyPublisher book with the weekly photos I took during my pregnancy, and the pictures I took of Toddler X's first week or so of life.
So, if I had the choice, I'd pay for a birth photographer and skip the newborn photos. Now, if we were talking about photos at 3 months+, when the kids have personality instead of being a sweet little blob... well, that I might have a harder time deciding.

p.s. I can send you a link to our birth photos, if it helps make a decision.

It's a tough call but I think I'd rather newborn or early baby photos-- like @red_seattle: said, when they are 3 months or so and showing personality.
I'd like to have a handful of photos from the birth, especially right after when I first get to hold the baby, but I don't see paying a lot for something only I will look at. Hopefully someone in the delivery room can take a few, I guess.

Newborn! H's were amazing & I'm so happy I'll always have them!

Newborn! Most of the birth photos look like just about anyone could have taken them and the lighting is usually awful.

Newborn! I would never display birth pictures around the house, plus newly born babies are kind of goopy, and often their features are all misshapen and skewed from being pushed out, within a few days all the swollen eyes and smushed noses even out, so the newborn pictures are a much more "true" image of what they will look like.
I do have birth photos as well, taken by my DH during our c-section, I love them but they aren't the kind of thing I show around too much, my newborn pictures however, got sent out to everyone in our birth announcement.

Newborn for sure!! I don't want anyone else in the birthing room then I have too.

I voted newborn. We did a session for DD at 11 days and I love them. I looked like crap at the hospital and I would have hated every picture. Maybe next time when I know what to expect

I was a hooooot mess by the time she finally came, I hate the pictures with me in them right after she was born (taken by family and our doula... just point and shoot snaps). It had been over 48 hours since my water broke and I had given up any semblance of trying to look nice. I was sweaty, nasty, oily and smelly. Prettybaby was adorable though

I definitely wish I had better birth photos - I love seeing them on blogs and pinterest. But I also treasure my newborn pictures - so I cannot choose!!! good luck with your decision

@shopaholic: Lol. I was going to say the exact opposite about birth photos.... Most pro birth & immediately after birth shots I've seen are amazing & most people couldn't capture those moments or have the quality that a pro-photographer would. I think with the right camera (I only have my iphone camera at this point) I could do a decent newborn shoot myself.... can't really do my own birth shots though. lol
@bpaig: Here's a birth photographer I follow if it helps seeing some more birth shots.

@red_seattle: Oooooh... I love birth photos too!

Our doula was a photographer also and she took some wonderful photos immediately after LO was born. And then we bought a small package from the hospital photographer once LO was clean and prettier lol. We didnt do a separate newborn session and we are okay without it

Neither? Birth photos can be sooooo amazing, but I wouldn't want photos of this first birth because it was horrible and traumatic. And I was never quite sold on newborn photos...the ones where baby is propped up in/on something, wearing a hat, etc.
Between the two, I'd rather have newborn photos that were FAMILY photos!

I agree with @Minnie_Girl....newborn+family sounds like the perfect option!

Newborn, for sure. There's no way in hell that I would have an unnecessary stranger in the room just to capture the moment. That's what my husbands iPhone is for.

Fun question!
I've seen some incredible birth photography. But it seems like there's more room for error, and some hospitals forbid it. If you don't announce that your professional photographer has arrived, they probably won't do anything. But I'm a rule follower, so that would make me nervous.
Newborn photos with a certain style I love--the ones focused on the baby with its parents.
That would be great if you could have both like @Arden. Is there a certain photographer you have picked out already?
