Feb-u-ary. I think it might be technically a correct pronunciation but it bugs me. There is another R in there!
bananas / 9899 posts
@jedeve: I always pronounce February with the first "r" audible, if only slightly!

I used to hear "axe" instead of ask at work. Ugh! "Can I axe you something?" No! You cannot axe me something!!!

Drivewave. Who says that? Oh, my old neighbor. There's only one ve in driveway!!

I work in orthopedics so I hear people say "rotary cuff" all the time instead of "rotator cuff." It's so annoying!

Oh, Chipolte is my worst (notice the L) - I really wish people would just sound it out as it's spelled!

--Old Timer's instead of Alzheimer's (although sometimes, it's on purpose-- still drives me nuts)

These all come from the same person! Lie-berry (library), mushmellow (marshmallow), shure-loin (sirloin), pacific (specific), pasketti (spaghetti.)
pineapple / 12802 posts
@wonderstruck: honestly, most of those could be added to the same person I'm thinking of as well, including the ones I mentioned in my original post... ugh. It's so fustrating.

It's been mentioned already, but liberry is one that I really hate. But usually grammar issues in writing bother me more. Like "should of" for "should have" type things. My SIL is terrible about it; I've seriously considered hiding her on FB for it.
clementine / 812 posts
I had an English teacher who always said "pacific" when he meant "specific"
Killin me man!!

@Torchwood: my husbands ex always says should of or could of or would of. It drives him MAD. hahaha I just sit back and lolz to myself.
coconut / 8472 posts
@jedeve: Wow, I have never once in my life heard anyone pronounce the first R.

@.twist.: Yeah, I cringe every time. I can see why my DH ended up needing speech therapy , he had a terrible example. She also uses toddler-speak. Snacks are yum yums, she is gram gram, etc. Even when there is no toddler around. It drives me crazy.
pear / 1998 posts
@swurlygurl: I was going to post the same thing. It drives me crazy more than anything else. I wonder if it is regional?
I'm from Missouri and everyone I know there pronounces it correctly: chi-pote-lay
Now in Wisconsin 4 out of every 5 people pronounce it: chi-pole-tay
The rest of the stuff that bothers me is from regional accents, so technically they aren't "wrong".

@Mrs. Coral: An English teacher?! That's awful! DH still occasionally says that one and I'm always quick to say,"It's not an ocean! The S is not silent!"

If we're being honest, I like to go Super Troopers sometimes and replace my "now" with "meow"...
pineapple / 12802 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: Yea, I don't count anyone with an accent or speech impediment. The woman I'm thinking about has zeeero excuses for her mispronunciations other than laziness. Our mayor's name is Nenshi and even though it's said ALL THE TIME in news and in the office when we chat, she STILL calls him NESHI. WHY DID YOU OMIT THE N? WHYYYY?

Cringe-worthy:
"another words" instead of "in other words"
expresso instead of espresso
"for all intensive purposes" instead of "for all intents and purposes"
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Mrs. Coral: woah... that wasn't even on my radar because I don't even remember how to say now, with how often I replace it with meow. Let's just be clear, this one is totally, 100%, completely, acceptable.
ETA: I realise this might have sounded like sarcasm, which I am often. But it wasn't! I am dead serious!
pineapple / 12802 posts
@lawbee11: Those are all amazing. I am ashamed to admit that I used to call espresso expresso. DH had to point it out to me. *runs away*

@.twist.: Yeah, northers pronounce "bag" and words that rhyme with it weird, but I just accept it.
The way they pronounce chipotle is just flat out wrong (you can't switch letters! unless you are Brett Favre I guess)
pomegranate / 3706 posts
"preventative"
"intensive purposes"
"anyways"
"irregardless"
"de-thaw"
"I's" (as in "so-and-so and I's"....crrrringe)
There are just so many...

Haha, the guy im doing a play with right now can't pronounce the word diocese. He says di-AH-sis.
pomelo / 5524 posts
@creativemomma15: This one drives me the most nuts. There is no x in ask!
@HabesBabe: An old boss of mine said irregardless ALL. THE. TIME.
Norf for north is another one that is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

@erinpye: "my sister and I's house...." That's seriously the worst!!!!

On the topic of Chipotle - I've heard people pronounce it Chi-pote-el... what?!?
coconut / 8854 posts
When asking to use a scissors, she always says "Can I use your scissor?"
Also pronounces Parmesan parm-a-san. Everyone else I know pronounces it parm-a-shan, right?!
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@MrsBrewer: that's at least better than my grandma, who used to say par-me-see-an!
Someone I love who is very well educated used to say "mine as well" Instead of "might as well"
