I never thought when I joined Hellobee in September of 2011 that it would take me until March of 2013 to write a board post about being pregnant. It has been a long road but we finally got there. Here’s what happened:
We got married in April of 2011 and were ready to start trying immediately. We even had people at the wedding talking about how we were probably going to end up with a honeymoon baby (kind of awkward). After about 6 months of trying, I went to my OB/GYN for my annual appointment and discussed our disappointment that we hadn’t been successful. She told us to give it a year (6 more months) since we were both relatively young (31). I wish I hadn’t listened but at least she’s not by doctor anymore. After another 6 months I decided to find a new OB/GYN who was closer to my house and lucked out with the most amazing doctor ever. I never thought that I would gush about a male OB/GYN but this guy is amazing. At my initial appointment with him he discussed Clomid and told me that he thought that may work without me needing to see an RE since my cycles were extremely predictable. He also scheduled an HSG for me & an SA for the hubs. Those test results were clear for both of us and I started Clomid the following month.
The Clomid didn’t work the first month and I was extremely disappointed and sad. It seems like everyone you’ve ever met becomes pregnant when you’re having difficulty. We tried the Clomid for a second and then a third month and none of those cycles were successful. At the follow-up appointment for the third cycle of Clomid, I had some pain during the exam. My doctor told me he thought that it could be a cyst and had me wait at the office for an ultrasound to confirm. The U/S found something, but it wasn’t a cyst. So, I was scheduled for an MRI the following day. The MRI results showed that there was a growth on my appendix that was moving south toward my pelvic area, so my doctor contacted a general surgeon to get his opinion. I went in for a CT scan two days later because the surgeon said that would provide a better look. One week later I had a radical appendectomy with the tumor, appendix, part of my intestines, and some lymph nodes removed. It turns out that I had an extremely rare, benign adenoma which was rapidly growing. They got it all and I was told to take 2 months to recover from the surgery and then I was referred to an RE.
At our first appointment with the RE, she said that she thought IUI was the way to go and we agreed. Our first cycle was unsuccessful and I actually developed a cyst, so we had to wait a cycle for that to go away which it did. Our second cycle of IUI was successful and we found out on December 21st that I was pregnant. Yay!! I was so nervous about something going wrong that we decided not to tell anyone until I hit 14 weeks. This was MUCH harder on the hubs than it was on me and he convinced me to tell our families at 12 weeks after we had an U/S and the doctor said that everything looked great. I’ve been extremely sick but I know it won’t be forever. I’m actually due one year to the week after my surgery to remove the tumor (9/1/13). It’s really so crazy that sometimes it doesn't even feel like I’m actually pregnant.
I also want to say that our RE was amazing and I cried when we graduated back to the OB at 10 weeks.
