I will be 12 weeks this Thursday, and will be sharing our good news soon after our 12 week u/s. Is it okay to announce a pregnancy to our friends via Facebook instead of in person? I have noticed that all of our friends have announced their pregnancies to us in person, but my problem with this is although we have several friend gatherings coming up in the next 1-2 months, they are ALL during someone else's special event. (Bridal shower, 3 different one year old birthday parties, and a wedding.) I don't want to detract from anyone's special day, but I also don't know if sharing our news via Facebook is frowned upon or not.

I would shoot close friends a text or call prior to a FB announcement. Congratulations

I think it would depend on the friends. All my close friends I told in person or on the phone (for out of town friends). Acquaintances found out on facebook or through the grapevine, also didn't announce until 17-18 wks though. If a good friend announced via facebook and I didn't know first I would feel kinda surprised and bummed. I think I'd even prefer a text! That's how my BFF who lives across the country told me. One of my groups of friends has done announcements that way in one of our group texts we have going.

I'd send an email or a text to my close friends before posting on FB (I'm not a phone person). I think it's a little impersonal for true friends to learn the news just through a Facebook post.

I told close friends first- with my first pregnancy, close friends got a phone call or told in person (many live far away). With this one, I mostly did text or email unless it was someone I actually see often. I felt like I should tell them personally, even if by text or email, before telling the whole world. With both I didn't say anything on Facebook until after 20 weeks though.

Honestly, I must be the odd one out. But I only told close family in person (and with the second pregnancy I only told immediate family in person -- the rest found out on FB). I didn't worry about friends at all. Most of my friends have announced to us first via Facebook as well. It would never occur to me to be hurt if I saw a friend's announcement on FB via in person.

We told our friends in person/through text/calls. With my first, I didn't put it on FB til 20 weeks. I'm 15 weeks now and still haven't done so yet.

@coopsmama: That is how we handled our first pregnancy, and nobody seems upset. However, about 7 couples in our group of friends have had babies since then, and since they all told us in person I was worried it might be an etiquette thing I wasn't aware of.
On the other hand, I'm not sure our friends care about etiquette, because a few of them have shared their pregnancy news at other peoples events (my LO's 1st birthday party and another friend's wedding) I don't personally mind other people doing this, but I would never do that to someone else!

We only told family in person/ on the phone. Everyone else found out by word of mouth or Facebook. I'm kind of of the mind that no one cares as much about your baby as you. Pregnancy reveals, gender reveals, etc. kind of make me roll my eyes.
I like seeing birth announcements but could do without the rest of the hoopla. -
We told close friends and family in person. We never really made an announcement on FB. People eventually saw pictures of me posted from a wedding when I was 7 months and figured it out. We did announce the birth on Fb though.

If it were me, I'd send a text with an ultrasound picture to close friends or a text with a picture of my LO in a big brother shirt, but that's typical in our circle of friends.

Similar to what other posters have said- I would call or text close friends or tell them in person. For friends you aren't that close to, a fb announcement is perfectly acceptable.

I definitely assumed close friends would be hurt to find out on FB. I tried to tell them all in person, and got most of them by inviting them to a gathering that we organized. If I couldn't get someone in person, I at least made a point of telling them over Google chat so there could be a conversation.
But I don't think it's a big deal. In your situation maybe try to have a few people over to tell them? Everyone else is probably okay to find out on fb.

I"ve been telling people as I see them here and there (I'm cool with telling close friends early once I had a heartbeat at 8 weeks). There are a handful of people I wont see before I plan to announce so I texted them.

I think Facebook is fine for a general announcement however I think close friends should at least be given a heads up via text/email/phonecall

I didn't announce on FB so I only told in person/called/texted. You do whatever makes you happy, though! Congratulations!

I would call or email anyone close that you can't tell in person before you announce on FB.

I think if it's a person you'd be upset learning that they were pregnant via Facebook you should send a text or meet up and tell them in person. Otherwise, I think Facebook is fine.

We told all close friends in person, by phone or email before doing the "public" announcement for LO1. We never announced publicly with LO2, but anyone who we felt needed to know was informed by 16 weeks.

I think your close friends should be told in person or even phone or text but FB is ok for the others.

We told close family and friends by 8 weeks with N. Nothing went public on Facebook until after the 20 week scan.
We told family between 6-8 weeks with E due to me being super sick. Nothing went public on Facebook until 18-20 weeks. I figure the important people already knew. Why bother announcing it any sooner.

I texted/e-mailed my close friends to tell them. Much more personal than a FB announcement that would announce to all my FB friends and not just the close ones. I didn't announce on FB until 20 weeks and most everyone knew by then.

We were in a similar situation and sent out a text saying "See you in June!" with the ultrasound picture. For us it seemed more personal than Facebook. But I guess we never really did a big Facebook announcement. I don't know. I just think I would be hurt if I found out about a real friend's pregnancy on FB...

Close friends (those you talk to on a regular basis) I think should be told via phone/text/person. I would be bummed if one of my best friends announced it on FB before telling me.

Thats a tough spot. I can see why you dont want to overshadow someone but also dont want to announce on FB.
I agree that a phone call to those you can get in touch with and/or a text to those that are harder to reach may be more appropriate.

I told most people I'm close to before; maybe some people in the end were not happy to have found out via FB but I wouldn't have known!

I don't see the issue with sharing at other events as long as you're telling people personally and not taking a mic or making a huge announcement to everyone there or something.
I told two college friends at the wedding of one of them. We hadn't announced publicly yet, and I was obviously either pregnant or very fat, so I told the bride in the receiving line and our other friend as soon as I saw her at the reception. They were both happy and it wasn't a huge deal.
A lot of friends we just told as we saw them. We had a few couples over or met people for dinner or whatever...

We told family in person where possible, and for geographically distant family and friends we sent a group email with a cute pic of DS holding the scan pictures. I know my close friends would have been really upset to find out on Facebook - although I am hoping not to announce on FB until 20 weeks.

We announced on social media. I felt it was the most efficient and some people I wasn't planning on seeing for a bit. I felt a little bad, a couple of close friends commented on not being told more personally, but it was just fine.

I'm in the camp that no one really cares, with exception of family, so I announced on social media to my friends.
