@Adira: They said I didn't, but my appt was so early I never ended up eating or even drinking anything! They did take an extra vial to send to the lab for more testing. But either way, even if my # came down some, I def still fail for sure! I always thought it's not a bad thing to have to change my diet anyway, so I'm not even sure why I feel so distraught. I already feel better ranting over here!

@whenoceansrise: Thanks love I feel much better now. I was trying to hone in on what exactly I was feeling; I think it's just that sense of I did something bad and I failed myself/baby. But yes, the actual process wasn't bad at all! That minute when the machine is getting the # was def intense tho!

@snowjewelz: Thanks for the info! I was kind of hoping you'd say you had a ton of juice right beforehand so I would know to avoid doing that, haha. I really hope the change in diet isn't as bad as you think! And if anything, you'll probably feel really healthy for the rest of your pregnancy!!!

@Adira: I did eat a ton of pasta the night before so I'm not sure if that would've spiked up my # too. There are a few posts about fasting/eating healthy before the test in the GD forum... I'm combing through them now for info haha!

@snowjewelz: Oh man, I love my pasta... can you not eat pasta now??? I would cry. Thanks for pointing me to the GD forum though! I'll look for tips for before my test!

@Adira: I have the diabetic counseling next Thurs so I'll share what I learn! I don't think I can much carbs at all, esp since my # is so bad. I guess I'm glad I ate all that pasta before the test? lol

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@snowjewelz: haha, seriously! I just read one of the posts on the GD forum and someone said that carb fasting ahead of time might give you a false positive anyway, so who knows what's the right thing to do!

@snowjewelz: you should learn at your counseling that you need to balance your eating. Do not eliminate carbs! That's a big misconception of diabetes. You actually need to eat carbs! You will be asked to eat three meals a day and three snacks. You will be given a number of carbs to eat at each of these times. You should always try to combine a protein with the carbs.

More than likely you will be asked to check your blood sugar four times per day. first of the morning (fasting) and then two hours post each meal.

The second vial of blood they took was likely to check your A1C levels.

I promise it is manageable. You will just need to be more aware of what you are eating and when. You will probably even feel like you are eating MORE on the diet than you were previously.

I had GD with my first pregnancy and have it again this time. I was tested and diagnosed earlier this time around. I was tested at about 18 weeks I believe so I've been dealing with this for about 6 weeks already.

I can't control my fasting blood sugar (which is the hardest to control with diet) so I am on meds, but it's just a pill that I take every night with dinner. I had this same issue previously.

I know it's very overwhelming and upsetting, but I promise it is completely manageable and you will be fine.

@Adira: My doctor recommends not eating for 1 hour prior to the testing. My test was at 9:00am. So I made sure to be done with my breakfast before 8:00. She also suggested that whatever I eat for breakfast shouldn't be the worst thing I had ate in a month.

I also had my A1C hemoglobin tested. This gives more of a three month history of blood sugar. Mine was slightly above normal so she had a better idea that I should be treated immediately.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@MamaG: Thanks for the tip! Mine didn't say I needed to fast at ALL but suggested I didn't carb load immediately before the test. Glad to hear what other's have suggested/done!

ETA: I had my A1C hemoglobin tested I BELIEVE when I went in for my initial bloodwork around 9/10 weeks. They said it was to give them a better idea of whether I was likely to develop GD in the future or not. I know that those tests came back normal though, but I'm not sure if they would be different now at 20+ weeks pregnant.

@MamaG: Oh yay! Carb lives!! Thanks for the info and the reassurance! I think it's manageable also... I think I was/am mostly upset w/ such a high #, like what did I do to get that?! I feel like I'd end up on meds too just b/c my # is so high I don't think with diet it will decrease that dramatically.

I was looking at some sample diets for GD, it actually just looks like the same diet I'm always trying to get on lol, which is basically less carbs!

You shall be my GD guru from now on...

@Adira: Your A1C could be different now, but who knows. So much of what drives GD is hormones. My GD was completely gone as soon as I gave birth last time. Unfortunately, I'm at higher risk for type 2 diabetes now because of having GD twice and I will have my A1C checked routinely going forward.

  12. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@MamaG: That's interesting and scary (about you being higher risk for Type 2 Diabetes since you've had GD twice)!! I guess I'll find out soon enough what my body is doing. I have the glucose test in 4 weeks.

@snowjewelz: I certainly am not all knowing, I just fully understand how overwhelming and hurtful the diagnosis is. I felt exactly like you the first time. It was a very stressful thing to go through as my number one objective was to stay off insulin shots. And I found the dietician to be mean. Hopefully you get one that is much nicer.

This time around is different, I don't stress as much but I do get frustrated when I get a high reading that doesn't make sense.

The one suggestion I do have is to understand your insurance. Those little test strips are EXPENSIVE (approximately $1/each). And when you are testing 4/day that's about $120/month. My insurance will only cover 50 strips per month unless I'm actually on insulin, then they will cover more. This is the minimum requirements under ACA.

My dietician recommended the Wal-Mart brand glucometer and supplies this time when I whined about the cost. The brand name is Relion Prime and it is considerably cheaper (though not typically covered by insurance). The strips are about 18cents each. I use this now, skip the insurance completely and pay for it all out of pocket and still come out way ahead.

So definitely understand your insurance in this case if you want to try to save some money.

@snowjewelz: I am so sorry you are dealing with this I remember when I was (incorrectly) diagnosed with clotting disorder at the beginning of this pregnancy how upset I was, especially having to stick myself everyday and feeling i like my body was a failure. But you are obviously already a great mama and Kara is so lucky

@MamaG: I most definitely do not want shots either; I hope that with diet and possibly medication, I can get get by! And I'm sorry your dietitian wasn't nice! I'm anxious to see how the appt goes.

And thanks so much for that insurance tip... That hadn't even cross my mind yet! I guess I'll have to call insurance after the appt and compare to see what works out to be cheaper.

@magnolia: Thank you! What you went through was crazy! But you are spot on about how it makes us feel as moms; like someone we've failed or we're not good enough.

@snowjewelz: Hugs! Don't feel bad about the diagnosis. When I got mine, I cried for like 20 minutes thinking I did something wrong and was a bad mother already. My # was 136, so I think I just barely failed (failed 2 of the 4 on the 3 hr test too, but not by much). I've been doing the diet for 7 weeks and it's a pain, but manageable. So far everything is diet controlled, so no meds are needed.

Re: insurance. You can probably check online on your insurance provider website to see what's covered as well. Mine covers the One Touch Ultra II machine, & my strips (150 ct) & lancets (100 ct) are about $35, but they last about 50 days or so now that I was decreased from 4 tests a day to 2 a day.

I'm here if you have any other questions too. Not as seasoned on it as @MamaG: but getting the hang of it slowly.

@MrsLilac: Sorry to hear that you feel bad. Hope she takes easy with the kicks for a bit.

@Adira: The morning of my 1hr test, I had 2 boiled eggs & a piece of toast, so it wasn't a crazy meal. I am overweight & my grandma had diabetes, so that was all against me.

  17. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@AngelicOne: Same here - overweight and my grandmother has diabetes, so the odds are against me! Thanks for letting me know what you ate for breakfast!

  18. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@AngelicOne: Haha yeah that's exactly what I did! The shock of it wore off as I came out of the doctor's office, then I bawled in my car going back to work, but now I feel pretty much okay! Great to know there are GD mom's in our group!

It is my hope and prayer that the rest of you all pass

@AngelicOne: Yah, for good insurance. I'm glad your insurance is much more beneficial. Mine unfortunately, just plain stinks. Last time I didn't know I had options so I just sucked it up and paid the high prices. This time I was smarter and asked That's awesome that your doctor only has you testing 2x per day as well. Unfortunately, I'm still on 4x (was on 5x for a little bit to make sure the meds I'm on weren't too strong).

@Adira: I had a breakfast sandwich (Jimmy Dean D-Light) - English muffin, egg whites, cheese and turkey sausage.

I hit all the strikes (overweight, age, family history, and prior pregnancy history). Those are all of the risk factors that were listed by my dietician.

@snowjewelz: that sucks. Sorry Hun. It could be a good thing as you will be so aware of what you are eating so won't be tempted to eat loads of crap! I need to sort my diet out. I haven't had my blood tested since my 10 week appointment... Il have to ask about that.

My appointment today went a little better than expected, but we unfortunately didn't come out with a lot of answers. The cardiologist agrees that baby boy has a heart defect, but baby is a stinker and was faced away from us, so we still didn't get great photos. The Dr does think he saw a hole between his atria and a narrow aorta, which could explain why the left side of his heart is not developing as much. Good news is his heart does not look as bad as it could and there is a possibility that surgeries after birth will allow both sides of his heart to work. So we actually left the appointment feeling optimistic about baby's chances and that he is not as bad off as he could be yet. We have another scan in a month to try and get better pictures again. Hopefully he will be more cooperative!

@MrsScallop: that's really good news. I hope the more that he is observed the better able they are to gauge his issue and hope it will be the type of thing that looks better the more you are able to look at him.

@MrsScallop: Glad the appointment went well and you left feeling positive! Bummer the baby wasn't as cooperative as he could be though to get more definitive answers. I'm hoping for the best!

@FaithFertility: Registering is so much fun! Hope you had fun!! We didn't end up putting much on our registry for when Xander got older, but it certain makes sense! Then maybe you won't get five million things of shampoo like we did!

@cheert16: I can't use any of the shampoo I got from my shower because it aggravates Xander's eczema! Hoping I can use it on baby #2 because I literally have like 4 full bottles of the stuff!

@FaithFertility: Woo! We were supposed to go this weekend but got too lazy. Our registry is already set up; I just wanted to go into the store to get the goodie bag and to show DH some of the gear IRL so we'll probably go this weekend. How did it go for you?

I def have things on there for later on!

And thank you ladies for all the support regarding GD! I told some people over the weekend too and everyone's super supportive.
