There is a Livingsocial deal for a 3D/4D ultrasound in my area, and I am really tempted to buy it! The voucher is $70 and includes a 25- to 30-minute 3D/4D ultrasound imaging session, four color prints, DVD of session set to music, and CD with 15 to 30 still images.
So if you had a 3D/4D u/s, are you glad you did it? Also, how far along were you when you had it done?

I'm torn on this. At my hospital I only get 1 ultrasound at 20 weeks unless there is medical necessity for another one. I desperately want to see our little baby before then, but the 3D pictures creep me out a bit, lol. I might cave though!

id love to have one done, but I found out that my dr's office does not offer them, unless it is medically needed.
I do agree that they are a bit creepy, but i still want one!

I was glad I did it. The tech at the 3D place mentioned my placenta looked mature (I was 32 weeks). I asked my doctor about it and they got me in for a regular ultrasound and confirmed my placenta was calcifying earlier than it should be. They put me on increased monitoring and my LO was induced at 38 weeks because she stopped growing in the womb most likely because she wasn't getting the needed nutrients from my placenta. We wouldn't have caught it if I Hadn't had the 3D ultrasound.

I had two done actually. We saw 3D images at our elective gender scan at 16 weeks and then we had another at 32 weeks. The one at 32 weeks was supposed to be at 30 weeks but we had to reschedule. She was too big and two low down at 32 weeks so we didn't get great images (she'd been head down since around 20 weeks and was a large baby anyway). I think between 28 and 30 weeks would be a good time to go.

have you asked if your dr's office does them? i know my dr office has one and i've been with BFF for a couple of them & she didn't have to pay any extra for it, it was all just billed to her ins. everyone i know that has done the 3D has loved and and said it was worth it even if they had to pay for it. so i'd say if your OB office doesn't offer it and you have checked the regular rates (sometimes those deals aren't such great deals) and it still seems like a good price, go for it! i highly doubt you'd regret it =)

We didn't have it done. Several reason
1) We know the sex, we decided on a name, so what she looks like is our surprise left
2) I think they are creepy looking
3) Way to expensive, rather saved the money for diapers.
I have several friends that did it and their babies look just like the ultrasound pics.
I would check what the policy is if they can't get a good picture of the baby's face, will they do it another time for free?

We had 3!
We went at 15 weeks while my mother was visiting. She really wanted to know the gender and my regular U/S wasnt until week 20.
Although it was mostly 2D they turned on the 3D for a bit but the baby just looked alien, not really recognizable at that stage.
I went back at 28 weeks, when you're supposed to be able to get "good" shots of the face. Unfortunately little baby was shy and buried his face deep into my placenta with his back to me. We didn't see anything.
We went back a week later to try again, and the same thing unfortunately. Didn't get to see anything. The office did the best they could and didnt charge us, but the baby just didnt cooperate.
In a sense now, I'm kind of glad we didnt get to see his little face. It was a complete surprise when he came out.

We did! I really wanted to see what she looked like, and I'm glad we did. Our doctor's office did it for us and it was so cool to see her moving around and getting a little glimpse of her personality.
Ours cost $150, and after seeing @wheres_c's price, I think I'll have to find another deal next time.

@mrs. bird: My doctor's office does them, but I would still have to pay for it (I basically pay the u/s company directly; it doesn't get billed through insurance). I think the price is comparable to this deal, and it wouldn't include a DVD or as many pictures if I went through my doctor's office.

we did at 32 weeks?
ours was $140 for a 30 min session, prinouts, dvd of video, cd of photos.
i carried low throughout my pregnancy, so it was hard to get a good shot of his face, but we got a few good stillshots. dh was disappointed, but in hindsight the shots we did get look exactly like him!

We paid for one at 17 weeks, cause my birth center doesn't do ultrasounds at all. I was dying to know what I was having, so me and dh went to a little boutique...and LOVED it! Found out we were having a girl, watched her antics (like putting her arms behind her legs and balling herself up)...it was nice. She was only 17 weeks, so she looked pretty scrawny. Still worth it, though. We have a dvd from it that we're eager to show her when she's older.

I totally would have and was planning to the whole time! But my OB's office has their own ultrasound machine that could do the 4D imaging too! But every time they try to get the 4D the baby is so low and always covers her face. They tried at 3 different visits at no charge to us so we just decided to forgo the special video and music package from the private places. I still think its worth it though if your doctor doesn't have the 4D machine.

@char54: I found this really cool website that lets you input your due date and it tells you the best weeks for 3D u/s. It says that babies don't start gaining fat until 24w, so basically they look creepy in 3D before then. You could always have a 2D u/s before your 20w, though. (And the 2D would be cheaper, too!)

It was my favorite thing ever in pregnancy. We got the gender done at 15 weeks exactly, and got great face photos at 30 weeks. The last one helped us name him!

I didn't do it. I figured we'd see our LO soon enough in real life and we had so many baby things to buy and put that money towards. I think it's a cool thing to do if you have the extra money...... but we didn't.

We know we are having a girl, she already has a name.
I already get biweekly ultrasounds now for being high risk.
We want to be surprised as to what she looks like,
I don't want to take all of the surprise out of it.

Not unless my dr. Does it as a routine scan. I think they're a little creepy so I wouldn't pay extra for it.

So I get what 3D means, but what is the fourth D??? The real fourth dimension is time... so I must be thinking about this in an overly nerdy way

@berdine: I was confused about that at first, too! Apparently the fourth D is motion--so you can see the baby yawn, stretch, etc.

@lawbee11: I just wanted to add that I saw and AMAZING 4D pic this past weekend in my Childbirth class. This couple paid for it every single month and the last one at 8 months, it was SO clear! You could see baby's hair and one eye was open! I agree with a PP that once they start filling out a little with some fat, they wouldn't look so freaky anymore. Anyways - I thought their 4D pic was really cool!

They always do part of our every two week ultrasound in 3d. So, it's normal to me now, but if I didn't get them all the time, I would probably buy a deal like that. Even though I think babies look kind if weird on the 3D pictures, it's really fun to sort of see the shape of their features, guess who they will look like, etc. I vote go for it!

I had one at 14 weeks for gender determination (she looked like an alien still) and we're having a 2nd one tomorrow night @ 30 weeks to see what she looks like! I think they're awesome and so fun!
I will say if you're going to spend the money on it, definitely get the package that has the DVD of the whole thing. Honestly, to me that's the best part. the DVD will last longer than the photos And it made me heppy to go back and re-watch it!

I had one and I don't think I'd spend the money to get it again. I ended up having a ton of u/s because I was high risk and during those they would switch to 3D.
