I had my 11 week NT ultrasound/blood work drawn yesterday, and I can't seem to stop thinking about how frustrated I felt about the appointment! I spent about 20 minutes with the ultrasound tech, and she was able to point out a good heart rate, the limbs, nasal bone, but she didn't give any details about the NT thickness. She said it's too early to know, so I stopped asking questions. I was hoping my doctor would discuss further about the results but she barely commented on the ultrasound, no red flags were mentioned. I only had a few minutes with the doctor, and I felt so rushed that I forgot to ask her questions about the NT thickness. Perhaps I'm worrying too much over nothing and it's good that my doctor didn't say much. She said she'll call me in a week to review all the results over the phone. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I didn't get my NT scan results for almost a week. They like to look at the complete picture (which includes your blood work which takes time to process) before they give you an indication of your risk factor. And that review is actually done by a radiologist, not by your OB, so that's probably why she didn't comment much. I wouldn't worry about it until you talk to your doctor again after the full results are in.

In my experience, no news is generally good news. My docs only called or told me anything if there was a problem.

@MamaMoose: that's good to know. I read about other NT scan experiences and a lot were able to get some results/reassurance from the OB. Perhaps my expectations were too high coming in and I just need to relax and wait. Thanks.

exactly what @MamaMoose: said. When my u/s tech left the room, I looked at the screen and saw what she typed in for nuchal thickness and saw that it was normal, but they wouldnt tell me until they had the full blood panel back

@zippylef: Yes! I kind of feel this way too. My doctor didn't call about my lab results so I assumed everything was okay. So I'm hoping she's feeling the same after viewing my ultrasound scans.

I went over my NT results at my 16 week appointment. I looked at the measurements on my form and googled them on my own but didn't hear anything from my doc for weeks. I agree with the PP that no news is good news and that the radiologists are responsible for reading the scans and they seem to take a while to get back. If your doc is willing to go over your results on the phone I think that's a good sign that everything is ok - if it wasn't they'd bring you in.

My NT scan was similar. The dr who did the scan told us upfront that it was an "all business" ultrasound and we would find out the results at my next appointment with my regular OB. I was bummed too!

We didn't get our results for a week. They mailed us a letter. But they did both an ultrasound scan and some blood work, so I don't think they could tell us anything just from the ultrasound. That was at least my understanding anyway.

The ultrasound tech didn't say anything to me about the neck thickness. I had an exam with the doctor after and she said that she looked over the ultrasound and said that everything looked good. The nurse actually called me yesterday and said my results all came back normal. I was expecting more information but that was all they said. I am taking it as a good sign the nurse called and not the doctor. My friend had the doctor call her since she had some abnormalities, but ended up turning out fine.

Our tech told us the thickness and said it was normal, and our OB confirmed that at the visit where we had the scan, and then they called us about a week later with the blood panel results. But I know that everybody's office is different, as evidenced by the different answers here. I know it's frustrating, but hang in there, they would tell you if you had reason for concern!

Ultrasonographers actually CAN'T give you that info - they aren't doctors. Their job is to record everything but the actual 'diagnosis' has to come from the OB/radiologist/etc. My SIL is one and she gets so frustrated when people try to get info out of her because that's not her job, so def try not to worry about it! That's why they can "show" you things, but not give you test results. I totally get it though - I had an u/s last month for a breast lump and i was seriously STUDYING the technician's face for signs of panic. Instead she just quietly left the room without saying anything. It was fine but it's definitely nerve-wracking when someone "knows" something but can't deliver the news.

@JoJoGirl: Yes! I know.... But I wish my doctor said more about scan. I felt the ultrasound tech gave me more info. The 10 minute visits with the doctor are so brief, it's hard to get anything out of the experience.

My NT scan tech was also very blunt and straightforward. I think she was also mad that I was late to my appt because she said to me, "We have to rush this because people need to eat lunch too".
Anyways, my ultrasound went by really quickly. She just pointed out things like..here's your baby, yes its moving around, heres the spine, hearbeat is normal. When we heard the heartbeat, I kinda giggled because I was so happy but it interfered with the doppler and she scolded me, "You have to stop laughing". Sheesh! Then she went outside to let the doctor analyze the results, came back in and said we're all good to go, everything was measuring normally.
Thankfully our genetic counselor was sooo nice and gentle. Totally made up for our NT scan experience.

my nt scan was similarly disappointing, but it's because baby wouldn't cooperate. we didn't even end up getting the measurement (but still had to pay!). the u/s tech reassured us though that the blood work is the most important and most accurate part.
