I can go for routine cleaning right? It's just if anything else needs to be done I might have to wait? I don't recall them applying/injecting anything if it's just a routine teeth cleaning.

Definitely!
I got a cleaning and a few X rays a few days before I knew I was pregnant. I remember telling the hygienist that there was no way I was pregnant...whoops!

Yep, you should be fine and you should get routine cleaning done, especially pregnant b/c that's just another one of those things that affects your body while pregnant. I actually had some teeth work done while heavily pregnant with my second. Think it was a root canal but it had to be done. I was in too much pain. Just talk to your OB if you're concerned and he/she should be able to tell you what they shouldn't inject into you if you ever have to do some major dental work like I did.

You can, but I found there was a sweet spot. Too early and the thought of things in my mouth make me want to vomit. Too late and the pressure from my belly made it hard to lie on my back.

Cleanings are ok, xrays are not. Just let them know. Your gums might be a little bit more sensitive and bleed more.

Yep!
My OB said xrays where fine, even gave me a note for the dentist, but they still wanted to wait till my next appointment.

I just went this week.
I had a cleaning but no X Rays and no Fluoride treatment.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Grace: Ah smart! So right around now (16 wks) should be perfect!
@lavender: Ugh, I already have bleeding gums too!
I think I'll just wait till net time for the xray! Blah, I should've just had this done before I got pregnant!

Yes - In fact, I had to get a crown and got a deep cleanse after it was found that I had early stages of gum disease (severe gum disease has been linked to preterm labor) - they did use local anesthetic so it did not affect the baby. I got these done in the 2nd trimester as "they" say that is the best time to get dental work done.

Yep! I had my cleaning 2 weeks ago at 23-24 weeks and next week I'm even getting a filling replaced! It's totally fine, just no X-rays (at least that's my dentist, maybe others are more lax these days).
Oh and I think they also skipped fluoride or something. I remember the hygienist saying something to the doc about skipping something because I was pregnant and that's all i van think of.

Yep! My mom is a dental hygienist and wouldn't let me skip my cleanings while pregnant - haha

@snowjewelz: yup, definitely!
Fillings are okay, too. I just had two filled at 26w. My OB gave the okay on a novacaine without an ingredient & said they could fax a "dental procedure approved" letter to my dentist.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Yep, totally fine! Just let them know you are pregnant and they'll skip anything that they have to.

Definitely go. And I got fluoride during pregnancy and definitely recommend that. Pregnancy did a number on my teeth and I ended up with two root canals post partum so I can't recommend enough whatever care you can get to prevent that!
pomegranate / 3032 posts
check with your dentist but i needed a permission slip from my ob for a cleaning - i was so pissed after sitting in the waiting room for a 1/2 hour just to be sent home by the hygienist because the ob office was closed
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@mamimami: Ah! What is up with that?!
@Chillybear: What?! I will def check then. I already hate waiting!
grapefruit / 4120 posts
@snowjewelz: There's an old wives tale that you loose a tooth for each child. I have found this to be true, unfortunately! Thank God we live in an age where I don't have to settle for being a toothless old hag.

Totally fine! In fact, I've had two root canals done while pregnant (extreme morning sickness - and that plus vomiting whenever you brush your back teeth wreaks havoc on your mouth!) It wasn't fun but my OB said dental care is super important when you're pregnant. They just used two of the shields when they did X-rays instead of one. None of the anesthetics used in a typical dentist office have any effect on baby.
clementine / 806 posts
they did a routine check up and cleaning ... no xrays or any oral procedures ... but keeping your teeth up to snuff is important during pregnancy since all that excessive blood pumping through your body makes your gums expand and swell which can lead to other dental issues. Not to freak you out or anything.

I did at like 30 weeks pregnant. My hygenist was actually an ex-RN in L&D which was kinda cool! My dentist was willing to fix a filling that had too much space between two teeth if I wanted. It didn't hurt so I passed.
I think my only complaint was I got dizzy in the chair. I didn't realize it until I stood up to go to the bathroom and I nearly passed out. Maybe it was the angle or the pressure from my belly or standing up? I'm not sure but I would go earlier than the third trimester

Ugh, I desperately need a cleaning, have been putting it off for a year! Oops...
pomegranate / 3643 posts
Yes! I think there is some evidence about good dental hygeine preventing pre-term labor.
And then remember to schedule an appointment after the kiddo, so you don't end up like me and putting end off, winding up pregnant again, and going 3 years without x-rays!
grapefruit / 4823 posts
@autumnlove: haha me too!!! I was talking to them about my 6 month old and telling them how we weren't sure when we were going to have the next one! Oops
I went for a cleaning and emergency checkup with both pregnancies.
nectarine / 2115 posts
I would aim for the second trimester. I went for a routine cleaning and checkup. I did have some things that need attention, but my dentist decided to wait until I had the baby. There are some things they can't do (i.e. x-rays, certain drugs) but most things are fine.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Definitely go! Just decline X-rays and consult with your OB if you need work done.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Routine cleaning is encouraged during pregnancy! I had to get a wisdom tooth pulled while pregnant and got local anesthesia.
eggplant / 11861 posts
@snowjewelz: I was just posting about this due to a tooth achr, my OB said regular cleaning, fillings and all is ok, I'm even getting a tooth pulled Thursday they only thing the paper says I can't have is novacain with epinephrin? So look out for that!
