I know when I ovulated, so I know that I'm 9w2d today, but I just had an ultrasound and they measured the fetus at 10w0d.
I know measuring behind or small might be concerning, but what about measuring ahead? Any ideas?

I measured ahead with DD2, 2-3 weeks sometimes and all was ok. Just had a 9.5 lb baby

I would say that it's nothing to worry about. Even if you know when you ovulated, you don't necessarily know when fertilization and implantation occurred. Can't fertilization/implantation occur like up to a week post ovulation?
Was your dr concerned?

@Lindsay05: So you're saying I'm in for a big baby... awesome.
@Applesandbananas: I actually had the u/s after my doctor's appointment, so I haven't talked to anyone about it yet. The measurement actually lined up perfectly with my LMP, so the u/s tech thought I was measuring perfectly.

I've measured ahead the whole time too. At my 8 week appt they had me measuring 9 weeks and changed my due date from 7/15 to 7/9. Even now I'm still measuring about a week ahead. We'll see when he decides to make his appearance!

@Adira: I think your little bean is growing well! Try not to worry

@NorCalWayfarer: Do you think it's possible the measurements are right, or do you know when you ovulated too?

@Applesandbananas: Isn't it ridiculous all the things we worry about??? They need to make a chill pill for me.

@Adira: I'm hoping they are right -- I really don't want to be pregnant into mid-July! It was already 100 degress here this week. I'd be totally happy with a late June baby or a 4th of July baby I ovulated a couple days early so I always thought the due date based on LMP was going to be too late.

@Adira: it's not ridiculous, you're a mom! I'll keep you and your new LO in my thoughts! When will you have another appt? Could you call the dr office and see if they're concerned?

I measured ahead the whole time (like 2-3 weeks) and had a big baby, but I had GD. I knew exactly when I ovulated, too. Sometimes, they just grow at different rates!
honeydew / 7295 posts
Honestly I don't think we can actually KNOW when we ovulated unless we are being monitored by a doctor. It's very possible that you ovulated earlier than you think. Either way a baby measuring ahead is no concern at this stage. Congrats. That's a healthy bean.

@Bao: @lilteacherbee: Thank you! That's reassuring!!
@Applesandbananas: I'll be having the NT scan in 2-3 weeks I think, so they'll get another measurement then!

I think I measured a couple days ahead the whole time.

@Adira: lol if its any consolation she was much easier labour and delivery than her older sister!

I had an IUI so my ovulation was triggered and LO still measured about 5 days ahead. So it is possible!

@Adira: I was measuring ahead at my 12 week appointment and they changed my due date by a week. I don't understand it but it was still wrong. I know when I had my LMP and the doctor kept asking if I was wrong about my period. Um, no...but no one ever believed me.
I had LO one day after my original due date...stupid doctors
Measuring ahead is totally okay, don't worry about it!

I always measured ahead and had a big baby.
Your babe is just growing good and will be healthy, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Babies grow and develop at different rates, even before they are born.
pomegranate / 3192 posts
I wouldn't worry at all. There is a huge variability with the measurements. The fetus is so small at that stage that even 1mm makes a difference.
My DS always measured 3 days ahead (dating u/s and anatomy u/s) and he was born at 39w weighing 7lbs so it doesn't always mean a big baby.
pomelo / 5469 posts
I was exactly the same as you. Even though I know when I O'd and the time we DTD and she was conceived...at 8wks, she was measuring 9, then same at 12wks so my EDD was moved a week forward. She was born a day earlier than the new EDD, so I would say it was pretty correct.
Oh, and she was under 7lbs so hopefully you won't have a big baby

I was always measuring ahead too, and the ultrasound techs kept saying that my due date would be earlier--- but my doctors said my due date was the same.
However-- I went in to labor a week early (which is how far ahead I was)-- I didn't have a big baby though. She was 6 lbs 10 oz.

I was temping and pretty certain of ovulation date. LO still measured 5-7 days ahead the whole pregnancy. Same thing happened with my sister's baby. Both our kids are healthy and 99th percentile for height. J was 22" long at birth.

@KT326: That's so encouraging! Thanks!!
@illumina: That's so interesting!! Thanks for that!
Thank you so much ladies!! This has all been so helpful and put my mind at ease! One less thing to worry about!!

I always measure ahead. I wouldn't worry about it. Congrats on the great US!

@Adira: they should have explained to you that at this stage of pregnancy, there is a +/- 7 day margin of error that is absolutely normal.
honeydew / 7463 posts
I had IVF w/ICSI (talk about knowing when fertilization happened...they manually injected a single sperm into my egg!) and somehow I still consistently measure a few days ahead. At first I thought it was the doc being sloppy but every tech since then and every appt I have measured ahead.
Go figure! Maybe he'll be a big boy!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Jump Rope: @littlek: When I told the tech that I was really surprised at how far along I was measuring, she said there was only a 1 or 2 day margin of error!!

I measured 2-5 days ahead in all of my ultrasounds. My doctor was never concerned. My son was born on his due date (water broke the day before) and weighed 7lbs 5oz. I think at my first ultrasound he was 3 or 4 days ahead of my calculated due date and my doctor said that was great because the margin of error was like +/-5 days.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
@Adira: my ob and RE agree on the +/-7.. At my anatomy scan I was 18w along but measuring closer to 20. We did fertility treatments so I know the date of conception, and was told not to sweat the difference because babies grow at different rates, and she may slow down at some point. I asked because I was worried about the already large head!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Jump Rope: Thanks for that! Maybe my tech was just overly confident in her abilities or something, haha!

Yay for an ultrasound!
I measured ahead my entire pregnancy with C. Sometimes by a full 2 weeks. The doctor kept saying he'd be big, but he wasn't. 7 lbs, 15 oz.
honeydew / 7811 posts
@Adira: exactly! And they really tried to scare me the whole time "9lb baby, 10 lb baby, you really need to schedule a c-section, etc!"
clementine / 828 posts
Mine measured 6 days ahead of ovulation, a week early based on my LMP. There is no way I ovulated on 7 dpo, and also no way I conceived then. Babies sometimes grow fast. My OB seemed to think measuring early was a good sign that I was unlikely to miscarry. They moved my due date up a week, based on where he was developmentally. I measured on track for my moved due date the rest of the pregnancy. I went into labor five days before my new due date (11 days early based on ovulation), and gave birth to a healthy 7 pound 15 ounce baby.

@Adira: I didn't know you were pregnant again, congrats!
I measured a week ahead for my pregnancy too, and if you add in that I ovulated late, that would have made him measure even "bigger." I just figured it was better to be measuring ahead than behind! He was born at 8lb 4oz, so big but not tooo big
My BFF was due the same time as me and they kept telling her that her baby was going to definitely be in the high 9 lb range and she was 7.5.
Either way, you just had an u/s! Those are the best!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@HazelEyes: Thank you!! I'm actually nervous this baby WILL be big because I've HEARD that second babies often are bigger and my first was already 8 lbs 14 oz and came a week early!!
