@banana: knowing me and my love of fries (mmm cheese fries... mmmmm chili cheese friessss) I will probably get a huge spike JUST from fries. I can give everything else up-- pasta, bread, rice... but I friggin love my fries.

OH I have had a major baked potato craving this pregnancy, maybe I should try that too!!!

@mrs.wagon: OMG I'm gonna cry now cause I loooooves potato! Chili fries? YUMMMMM.

Maybe you just have a low level of insulin intolerance? I really hope you do so that you can enjoy your fries!

Not that I have much to contribute, but this is really helpful at the moment. There's nothing to suggest that I have GD, but my mom is newly diabetic and she'll be here in a few days. While I can normally cook pretty darn well, the smell of garlic or raw meat or most cooked veggies presently sends me running to the bathroom. Nice to know some good diabetes-friendly foods that don't take much prep!

@banana: testing Wagon's GD, day 2. Had most of a bagel and cream cheese for breakfast (gave Wagon Sr. several large bites). Drank a protein shake beforehand. Level: 112! I think this is the first time I've actually been above the bottom number in the range the doc said I should be. Haha. So lesson learned: I CAN HAVE A BAGEL FOR BREAKFAST!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of curiosity, do you have to have GD to follow this kind of diet? I have my 24 week appointment tomorrow, and I am seriously considering asking about modifying my diet because I have to be able to do something to curb my sweet/processed carb cravings. They are insane, and it is a daily struggle to not eat a bunch of junk! *augh* I am just so over it today . . . I am bloated, tired, and cranky, and I can't imagine another 16 weeks like today.

@MrsWagon: That's so great about the bagel! It's amazing how much a little silver lining here and there can really make you happy. Enjoy!

@mrs.wagon: Ok seriously....now I'm beginning to wonder if you have GD at all! A bagel? That's like one of the worse things for a GD patient to eat cause it's chock full of carbs! I would seriously consider calling the doc and letting him know your findings. It's still a good idea to eat healthy of course, but it's also good to know the truth about your health! Cause if I ate a bagel, my levels would be in the 150 to 160 range!

@MsLipGloss: I think this diet would be good for any pregnant woman! less carbs and eating more often through the day is just a healthier way to eat, regardless of your GD status!

@banana: SERIOUSLY. I have a regular OB appt on Monday, I'm totally gonna bring it up then!

@ms.lipgloss: You can totally follow this diet even if you don't have GD! I had GD with my first and we still ate like this after he was born.

@banana: Quick update... had a huge chicken ceasar wrap for lunch (croutons and all) and got a level of 104...

    coconut / 8299 posts

@mrs.wagon: I'll have that for lunch sometimes too with a wheat wrap. LOVE Caesar Salad!!! If I have croutons, I just count it towards my 45g lunch limit.

I think the misconception people have is that the GD diet is SUPER limiting but it's actually not, right? You just have to be a little more creative and thoughtful about what you put into your body. It's just a matter of cutting down on carbs and upping your protein! You're doing so good on the diet!!! I know it's only been a little while but do you feel any difference? Like do you feel healthier or more energized or anything? Keep it up!!! You're doing so well! And it's only for a few months anyway. Plus maybe you'll get so used to eating like this, it may change the way you eat forever (like it did for me!)

@banana: seriously, I am now realizing that it's really NOT that bad. you just have to keep track. Now I'm realizing that I should be still watching my calories too. I could very easily get fat on this diet considering it's ok to eat plenty of steak and bacon and all that!

I do feel a little healthier, and my weight gain has DEFINITELY slowed down, but I'm actually more tired. But this could be coincidental with my seasonal allergies too. I also get very sweaty at random times in the day. I keep saying either I'm pregnant or going through menopause!

@mrs.wagon: My husband originally thought the same thing. He was like "I'm eating all day long, I feel like I"m gonna get fatter!". But for some reason, he just kept shedding weight! So I asked my nutritionist about diet & exercise and she told me that when people exercise, they usually burn calories from carbs first before burning calories from fat (apparently it's harder to burn off calories from stored fat). Since the GD diet is low on carbs, any exercise we do will more quickly burn off the fat calories, since there isn't much carb calories to burn off. My husband does a lot of walking so I think the calories he's burning off is from his fat, since his carb intake is lower.

I don't know if any of this is true but it makes sense to me!

@mrs. wagon: I was just checking in to see what you had done recently to "test out" your levels. Glad to hear you can have a bagel for breakfast - that's HUGE!

So just a little GD-related update...

Just had one of my favorite GD friendly meals yet-- we went to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch and we shared some skinnylicious lettuce-wrap chicken tacos, mexican style, which were messy but delicious. Then I had the skinnylicious chopped salad, which comes with egg, blue cheese, bacon, avocado, apple, corn? all kinds of yummy stuff. I also had half of Wagon Sr.'s french fries (I LOVE their french fries). Then we shared a slice of low-carb cheesecake with strawberries (that was GOOD). Then we walked around a bit and I shopped for Wagon Jr. and Lil Miss Wagon, and when I tested my levels I was at 87. No joke.

I kind of want to go back to CF NOW and have that same exact meal!!! YUM!!!

That sounds heavenly. Also, they have a great bar menu in the late afternoons/early evenings. Maybe I'll convince Hubs to go there for dinner tonight....
And the walking is a huge help! Even 15-20 minutes of casual strolling after a meal can make a massive difference!

@MaisyMay: yes I think this is going to be one of my new favorite weekend activities... mall day, shopping for the kids, lunch or dinner at cheesecake factory with walking afterwards to bring my levels down!!! I can't wait to have the low-carb cheesecake again!!!

  19. MaisyMay

    GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts

@mrs. wagon: Do you know about how many carbs your meal had? I'm still plotting out how to get Hubs to take me to dinner.

    blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts

@MaisyMay: lol! well let's see.. according to this site, the salad has 28, the french fries have 70 (so that would be 35), the cheesecake has 39 (so that would be about 20). It doesn't have the lettuce tacos but I don't think there's a whole lot of carbs in that. I ate 2 and Wagon Sr. ate 1.

So total I would guess I ate around 80 carbs? That sounds like a lot! It IS a lot!

@mrs. wagon: Sigh. You're lucky. My dinner max is 45. Maybe we could get the cheesecake to go and eat it later. Thanks!

@mrs.wagon: Ok seriously, do you have GD?? LOL. There's no way I could eat all that and get 87! Maybe it's better that you not know though so that you can keep up with this awesome healthy diet!

  23. mrs. wagon

    blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts

@MaisyMay: if you skip the fries that will save you 35! The salad is definitely filling and really great for just 28 carbs. I just think half the slice of cheesecake for 20 carbs is a great deal

@banana: Wagon Sr.'s new nickname for me is the carb-incinerator. Haha. But seriously, it is a great way to keep me in check no matter what, since I'd normally choose something WAYYYY worse for me at cheescake factory (as well as a totally decadent cheesecake, which have like 100 carbs in them!! ack!!!) and I'd never walk around afterwards! But I definitely am pretty borderline. I did have 2 blueberry pancakes with syrup on them after skipping breakfast on Saturday and my level spiked to above 150. What do you do when you skip a meal?

@banana: I couldn't eat it either! I might try to come up with something to eat there though. CF sounds so good right now!

@maisymay: CF is sooo yummy. I had it this weekend. I got a salad and steak and had a few bites of my husband's Jambalaya pasta. I didn't try the low carb cheese cake though! I shoulda!!!!

@banana: dude!!! 20 carbs for half a slice.... TOTALLY worth it!!!! I couldn't even tell the difference. There was even a thin graham cracker crust. Omg I want some more NOW!!!

@banana: As much as I want CF now, I'm actually going to be a really sweet wife and get Hubs something that I know he's been dying to eat: Arbys. Once he's home I'm going to have him change clothes really quickly and we'll hit the road. The closest Arby's is nearly 45 minutes from here. Plus we'll get to do mini-golf. Arby's has an interactive menu that lets you eliminate sauces and see how many carbs foods have.

@mrs.wagon: Sounds so good!! I LUUUUURV cheesecake. Like it's one of my favorite desserts in EVERRRRR. Ok I'm totally craving now. sigh. Might have to swing by CF on my way home.

@maisymay: We have an Arby's a few blocks down from my house but we've never eaten there before. The interactive menu sounds great! Might have to give that a try this week!

@MaisyMay: Arby's is one of Wagon Sr.'s favorites too! We don't have any near us! You are too sweet of a wife.

I had a beef and cheddar without the bottom bun, some of Hubs' fries, and the apple slices without the yogurt, and a diet soda. After that we played mini-golf and arcade games. My post meal sugar was 105, pretty perfect. I kinda wish they were closer because it was a tasty meal. Some time in the next week we are totally getting CF though.
