With C, we gave both sets frames with a note inside saying "due May 2012". Pretty cliche, but cute.
How did you tell your parents?

I just told my parents, over skype actually. With dh's parents, we had our first sonogram pic so we showed it to them, but it was from 6 weeks so it was hard to tell that it was a baby at that point, haha

First baby we called and asked how they felt about being grandparents....my in laws misinterpreted that to mean we were getting another dog though! It took my DH a few minutes to get them on the same page!
For our second we wrapped up some nice chocolates with a tag that said To Grandma and Grandpa, A sweet treat for you...and then when they opened the box there was a card that said With Love, from baby number 2! Due July 2014

We wrapped up a baby picture frame for my parents. For his parents we emailed our US pic then called to tell them to check their email.

I just told my mom, and she told my dad, haha. They knew I had a prior miscarriage, so we were all being very cautiously optimistic.
For DH's dad and stepmom, we put lottery tickets in a Christmas card and included an ultrasound picture in there. They flipped! For DH's mom we just told her.

The first time, it happened to be almost Mother's Day, so all the sets of parents found out through Mother's Day cards that were to "Grandma." (It was easier to just buy 4 of the same card and not worry about finding ones with the right title.) It was SO hard to wait until they got their cards, but it was worth it. We didn't bother with anything cutesy with subsequent pregnancies.

We told both sets of parents over FaceTime just a few days after we found out. All day sickness set in almost right away so I needed my mom's support & encouragement!

@Mrs. Confetti: we just called them! I called my mom at five weeks and she told my dad and dh called his mom at twelve weeks sort of spur of the moment!

For my ILs I found a poem from the baby to the family, printed it out on nice paper and framed it. We were announcing on Christmas, so I wrapped it and put it under the tree as part of our Yankee Swap gift exchange, and my MIL picked it. It's still hanging up on the wall in her den
I texted my mom the morning I got the BFP because I was freaking out, and called my father and stepmother after our 8 week ultrasound.

We took a picture of DH and I and we did one of those spoofs on the Mastercard priceless ads (Realizing there are three people in this photo.... priceless). My Dad got it right away but my Mom kept saying "oh, you mean the person taking the picture? Can you see their reflection? I don't see it?" It was hilarious to see her face when she finally got it!

We mailed them packages that contained a card, a baby book, and miniature bottles of sparkling cider.
The card said "Congratulations in your promotion... to GRANDparents!"

We called my parents and just told them...not too exciting!
We were due just before Thanksgiving, and asked DH's parents what their plans were this year. They chattered on about hosting the holiday meal and such, and then we asked if they might consider instead coming to meet their first grand baby. Dead silence, then "Are you serious?!" They happily spent Thanksgiving up here this year

@Arden: aww totally would have stole this idea I'd we hadn't told already!

My parents:We had them over for pre dinner drinks. I made drink labels and it said Nonni, Poppi, Aunt Sister, mom, Dad. My Mom looked at them and said oh cute, totally didn't get it, I guess she thought I was trying to include my nephews or something. I said well why do you think it says that? Then she screamed! Dad and sister were a little slower.
ILs: we just told them when we saw them in person.

We bought a 'Baby on Board' sign for my car, and since I had just bought the car, we used it as an excuse at Thanksgiving to get everyone into the garage. It took everyone a second, but they all loved it!
We just called my mom though, because she didn't come to my house.

For my dad I told him I had two questions to ask; one was something boring and mundane and then I asked him whether he would prefer to be grand-dad or poppa!
For my ILs, they'd just got back from Hawaii and we popped round for a visit. They were going to show us photos of their stay and we told them we had some photos to show them too then gave them the ultrasound pics.

I just told my mom, and she told my dad... Who told my uncle!
This time I told my mom, and I'll tell my dad on NYE on his birthday. I'm going to get him his favorite candy and sign the card from us + baby... And see if he ever notices!
We've decided not to tell anyone else until until I'm further along.

On Christmas eve, we gave my mom a cardboard ornament that said "Baby ________ arriving August 2014!" I wanted to do something cute with the in-laws but DH just announced it.

It was a few weeks before my birthday, so my mom had been asking me what I wanted for gifts. I called her and after we chatted for a few, I said I have an idea of what you can get me for a gift - it's a book. She asked the title name and I said "What to Expect While You're Expecting". She asked me if this was what she thought it meant and burst out crying and was telling my dad in the background "we're going to be grandparents!" It was the best reaction, especially since I couldn't wait to tell them in person.

I just told them at dinner. I said "Well, I guess you should start thinking about what you want you grandchildren to call you because there's one on the way!" They were so stoked.
My mom was crying & I've never seen my dad smile so wide

I gave them a box with an olive in it and told them it meant something. They couldn't guess, so I ended up telling them that that was the size of their grandchild.

We told both sides on Mother's Day weekend so we put a copy of the sonogram in the Mother's Day cards. Each side was very confused at first - ha! But were all very, very happy and excited.

We celebrated xmas eve with my family and went over on christmas day to give my parents a "christmas present that we forgot at home" for the both of them. They opened it up and inside was a little red stocking with a note in it that said... "Adding one more stocking to the family next year... Can't wait to meet you nana & papa!" They were so excited to say the least!

For my inlaws DH just told them. For my mom I called her (we do not live close) and told her how I always liked how our Birthdays are close and how it's cool we both have the zodiac sign Aquarius. My mom always told me the song "Aquarius"was our song. I asked her wouldn't it be cool if there was another generation to share that with. Sure enough LO was born exactly on my birthday so she def shares the same sign.

No kids yet, but our current plan is to order a photobook of our wedding photos, and put a sonogram photo with Baby LastName due date on it on the last page. Then when we are flipping through it, tell them that our favorite pic is on the last page so they look.
If it happens near a holiday or birthday we might change ideas.

We FaceTimed with my parents at the doctors office right after our ultrasound. Both my Sister and Brother were newly pregnant at the time and my parents felt bad for us. They were thrilled.
We told my DH's parents in person when we went on vacation with them.

We told my parents they day after we found out because we were staying with them for vacation and as soon as we walked in the door they were offering beer, wine and cocktails to relax from our long drive. I knew I couldn't hide it from them for long.
ILs we gave MIL a card from Baby at her birthday dinner.

My mom has told me the story of telling her mom that she was pregnant a million timed, this is how it went...
Mom: Can I have a glass of milk? (my mom hates milk)
Grandma: Sure (totally un-phased and started pouring.)
Mom: But I hate milk!
Grandma: Then why did you ask for it?
Mom: Because the doctor told me to drink more of it!
Grandma: Why?
She finally got it. But yeah, way to be random and confusing, mom.
So anyways, after hearing this story approximately 100 times, when we got our positive test we went over to our parents, and when they offered us something to drink I asked for a glass of milk. My mom immediately hugged me and started crying! Hahaha.

I ended up calling my parents separately as I couldn't wait to tell them but wasn't planning on seeing them any time soon. I also talk to my mom a lot and couldn't keep that in! With my mom, I walked home from the el after my appt and called her like I normally do and told her that I had been to the doctor that day and heard a little heartbeat! With my dad, it was a similar phone call.

@wonderstruck: such a sweet story!
We gave my parents new stockings for Christmas that said "Grandma" and "Grandpa" on them. My mom looked at me, "are you serious?" And my dad started crying.
grapefruit / 4049 posts
For our first two, it was just over the phone since we were long-distance and just didn't think of anything creative.
For #3... We had a stuffed animal that played a recording of the baby's fetal heartbeat when you hugged it (got it at an elective ultrasound place). So on Thanksgiving, we brought it to our parents' houses and when the time was right, DD1 showed her new stuffed animal to her grandparents and played the sound for them. She told them it was a baby's heartbeat, and they said, "Whose baby?"... DD1 answered back, "Mama's baby! A new baby! Mama is gonna have a new baby!"
