Pretty much just like a shower except no games and gifts are optional. When I have hosted/attended there was no mention of gifts on the invite. If people wanted to bring a gift, they ask the mom or the host what is needed. Sometimes there has been a low key activity for guests to do, like decorating wooden blocks or writing notes to the baby to put in a scrapbook.

I had November babies so a sip and see would have been a no go for me because of flu season. Plus, I didn't like sharing my newborn snuggles I had to go to work function when my son was 3 weeks old and I wore him in a wrap just to be sure no one would try to touch him. So I totally understand your germs fear! I really just wanted to post to say that it's really up to YOU if there is a celebration associated with the birth of YOUR child. It's great that you mom thinks there should be, but it's not her choice. So don't feel forced to do something you don't want to do to make her happy.

Given the choice between the two, I really think the sprinkle is likely to be less stressful than the sip-and-see. Can you just ask your mom to do something really quick and easy like brunch at a restaurant with anyone who wants to come?

We had one! It was really for MIL's friends (she threw it) but it was still cute. He was six months old though. People just came by for apps, cookies, champagne, and to hold him. He slept the whole time. They brought small gifts. Two hours total.

With both my kids I traveled with them to visit my family, the first at 4 months and the second at 2 months. We had get togethers/BBQ type casual events and people came to meet them. With one it coincided with holiday season so it wasn't "about" us but just good timing for us to introduce the baby, and with the other it was just to meet baby so we didn't do gifts although I think we got a few anyway. We had a shower for the first baby though. Anyway point being it can look however you want! My family likes casual so that worked for us.
