I am 38w2d and also haven't had any. I think I might just decline them, especially if I'm not in labor. It sounds unpleasant, and I'm unconvinced that they tell you much.
I might ask to be checked during labor if I think I'm stalled and want to consider an epidural. It might help me make that decision. Hopefully it won't come to that though!

Just had my first at 38w2d because the OB wanted a baseline for if/when I'd come in for labor or an unexpected appointment and also to determine if I was changing enough to warrant a travel restriction with the weather up here. Baby wasn't engaged and no dilation, so I'm curious to see if he'll want to check again at 39w1d before he leaves for the weekend or just call it fine.
Work doesn't have me scheduled for any more out-of-county hearings, so I might see if he'll skip it this timeā¦I'd hate to have anything kick-start labor when my laid-back OB is scheduled to be out of town! I'm all for minimal checks because really, you can waddle around at a 3 for weeks or go from 0-10 in hours.
