I was recently made aware of a conservative publication after someone pointed me to their article about embryo donation (it wasn't a nice article). While there I saw an article about a woman who spent $50,000 to ensure she was having a girl after having two or three boys. It made me wonder if it was easy to choose the sex would more boys or girls be born.
I think it would vary depending on location, but in the U.S. there would be more girls.

I think generally, people would want more boys. But in the US...man, it's hard to say.

@looch: My answer is based only on what sex my friends and family say they want most of the time. I go back and forth of whether I want to have a boy or girl and right now I lean more towards girl.

I have two boys so I'd love a girl to be my third. But from I've been told and so far experienced myself, boys are cheaper and easier in the long run.

I think boys everywhere. Many countries like China and India have high rates of abortion based on predictive sex-selection - boys are so very obviously favored, worldwide.

I would say boy, I'm actually surprised by all the "US = Girl" answers, in my area I feel like most couples want their "boy" first to carry on the last name (my area it is still very traditional to take the husband's last name). And we've gotten a couple rude comments about "don't' worry a boy will come if you try again" I try my best to say "I'm happy with my two girls, we don't need a boy to have a complete family."

I think in the US a lot of women wants daughters because they can identify more with that. They know how to dress them, they envision having common interests, or maybe they want the same mother-daughter relationship they have with their mom. But in other parts of the world it's more important to both men and women to have boys.

A friend who is a fertility doctor actually told me in the US there is a higher demand for female specific sex selection. His theory based on his own patients was that women are the main drivers and decision makers behind a couple's fertility decisions. And women disproportionately want girls.

I think boys both in the US and globally. Like it or not that seems to still be the more desirable gender. (Eta - to be clear, I don't think that the female gender should be the more desired gender either. I think it's a shame that this is even an issue! :() Most of my friends were hoping for a boy with their first.

I think it would even out. Especially if people were having multiple kids, I think most people would choose some of each. And for people having only one, I think it would be pretty evenly split between those who want girls and boys.

I actually think it would end up being pretty equally balanced in the US -- most people I know would like one of each sex, so I think you'd see a lot of selection for second babies to get the opposite of what the firstborn is. And I think for subsequent babies, couples might have preferences but overall the selections would balance out.

I think, just based on the law of averages (if I'm using that correctly!) it would be evenly split in the US. Most women I know - IF they admitted to having a gender preference - wanted a girl, at least one. But most men I know who've been willing to share have said they wanted at least one boy. I think that's pretty common. Globally, though, I do think boys would be more often selected.

I don't know that it would be girls in the US. Sure a lot of women want little girls, but I think men are just as likely to want a little boy.

@looch: @Mamasig: I don't know anyone that doesn't want at least one girl. My answer is also based on the fact that the U.S. is more progressive in terms of women's rights and equality. Women can do everything men can do, whereas in other countries that still isn't the case... and I think there's an assumption that women will also be more likely to stick around, and they tend to be more nurturing and relational. I'm generalizing and making some assumptions, but those were some factors I considered when answering this question.

I would welcome a child of either sex, but I wouldn't continue to add to my family in the hopes of having a girl. We happened to have a boy first and we're done.

Probably more girls in the US at least, but in other parts probably more boys. I would love to be able to choose a 2nd girl 
I think US = girl because it seemed like everyone I know except for a couple of folks wanted girls and people are always telling me "girls are just the best" but maybe that is because I have a girl.

Definitely boys globally especially in Asian countries where boys are treasured.
Im not sure in the US. I can see the argument for girls but I think in the US most people would want both so whatever opposite gender they didnt have? Interesting question!

@Mrs. High Heels: The Gallup article doesn't surprise me. I honestly had no gender preference, but my DH did admit that he hoped our first would be a boy. Now that we're expecting our second, he's hoping for a girl! I just think men don't talk about it as much.

I think girls. Every mother seems to dream of having a daughter and the gender disappointment posts that I see seem to lean towards disappointment in having a boy.
ETA: Speaking anecdotally and only in regards to the US.

I think it's boys hands down.
I think it's definitely culturally and how well you are weather you want a boy or girl. I would like to think that most couples want one of each (like us) but I know that's not true. Definitely with rules like you can only have kids... a lot couples would choose a boy to past down the family name.
I think we might have a skewed view of the US wanting girls. Yes there are articles about that but it highlights couples that can afford treatments to get girls.

I honestly think it would be close to 50/50. From the people I know, those who have all girls, want a boy and vice versa. Also, those who are having their first don't seem to care what sex they have.

I think based off the sheer number of women on these gender sites (with the majority doing gender swaying for girls), all the websites out there with people having gender disappointment for boys, and in real life the amount of people I know who really want at least one girl- I'd say girls!

My first thought would be US= girls, simply because that's what I've observed from family and friends. However, I have a boy and while I'd love to experience a girl as well, I really want at least one more boy!

This opinion is based upon the availability of clothing. I think US favors girls. Having a boy myself, I've noticed there are more clothing options available than for boys.

I think boys. As the soon-to-be mama of a sweet baby girl, it's been AMAZING to me how often I've heard "Oh, you'll have to try for that boy next time!" when people find out our babe is a little lady.

@keepcalmcarrie: My husband, along with a few other men I know... all wanted sons for their first. But once they got their daughters, they changed their minds and when it came to a second child they all said they would be thrilled to have another girl! Seems like they all love having a daddy's little girl. Another reason why I initially voted girls for the U.S. This is all anecdotal of course!

@dc yoga bee: People should just be happy for pregnant ladies, that's what I think! Haha. When we left our anatomy scan, (we literally had the photos in our hand) a lady on the elevator asked us what we were having. When we told her, she said "oh, man, you gotta try for that boy next time!" My husband wasn't too bothered, but I wanted to scream. Haha. I mean, HELLO! We just had one of the coolest/happiest experiences of our lives...let us revel in that for a hot second.
