So I will be 38 weeks tomorrow but yesterday I had 6 strong contractions back to back.
My question, if you have a scheduled c-section but get an internal done and you are dilated ( of course 3 or more) what happens??
Do they take you in and do the c-section? Do they wait until you're further dilated? What happens?

My doctor didn't want to do internal checks unnecessarily bc she didn't want to bring on labor, but I'm faiiiiirly sure with DS2 I was pretty dang dilated. Basically she told me if my water breaks or if I have regular contractions for like an hour I'm an immediate emergency C-section. She said after 36 weeks, if in doubt, take him out. Now they could bump you for another patient (happened to my friend - she waited through 2 other sections) if you're not in a serious situation - but basically if anything resembling progression happened my doctor told me to come into the hospital.

With DS2, I had prodromal (non-productive contractions) labor for 2 weeks. Eventually, I went to the hospital when I couldn't take it anymore. They were going to send me home, because of 0 dilation, but at the last check, I had apparently dilated. Even though it was only 1-2 centimeters, they ended up just doing the csection right then. I was 38w6d.
ETA: My OB doesn't do internals when you have a scheduled c-section.

I was going for a vbac, so it was a good thing in my case. I ended up going into labor because my rcs and was able to successfully have a vbac, so the c/s was cancelled.

@gingerbebe: I got an internal done at 36 weeks but last week I skipped it but I think I'll just ask to have it done today if it means getting a c-section earlier. That's a little scary though lol especially since I'm almost 38 weeks.

@ValentineMommy: OMG! are you serious!? That's a little scary now. Yeah he said I'm totally allowed to skip them because it's a scheduled c-section but if I have contractions he said he has to know because then he wants to check. SOOOOOO does that mean if I go in and am slightly dilated they may just do the c-section today?!

For my 2nd I had a scheduled c-section. They told me that essentially I should come to the hospital if I think I'm in active labor (following 5-5-5 rule). They would check me and if they determined I was in fact in labor they would treat it as a semi-emergent c-section and get me in an OR.
I had tons and tons of prodromal labor, but it always fizzled out after a few hours. I may have been dilated, but I have no idea.

I had strong prodromal labor for several weeks and was 3 CM dilated and almost fully effaced from late 37 weeks on (I was almost 4 cm the day of my section). I had a scheduled c-section at 40+2 and my OB never said anything about the dilation being an issue at all. She also did do internal checks on a normal schedule. This was my first delivery and it was an elective section, which may have impacted things.

@bubblegum: Nope. I refused regular checks because they were pointless. And since it was my 2nd I knew I wasn't in real labor. I kept thinking real labor was going to happen, but every time I started thinking "ok if this starts to pick up, it's it" it would just fizzle out. So I never ended up going to the hospital thinking I was in labor.

@bubblegum: I suppose!!! My doctors absolutely did not want me having pressure down there because of my retinal detachment (the reason for my csecs), so I'm not sure if the reason for the csec would determine whether or not they would do the csec right away or not.

@ShootingStar: Got ya! Yeah it stopped out of no where. I have 6 in a row and then nothing. I just assumed it was my body slightly dilating.

I had a C scheduled for 39 weeks. Went into false labor at 34w 6d. I was 2cm, 90% effaced. This turned into real labor 2 days later- when I got to the hospital I was 6cm. They took me for the C as soon as the doctor was out of her last surgery (so like 1 hr later).

@bubblegum when it was only prodromal, even with 2cm and 90%, my doc said she wanted me to try to hold out for 2 more weeks... if I had been further along, she would have just sent me for the C section that day.
Try to drink a lot of water and lay on your left side!

@lioneyes: got ya! See and that's my concern is that because I am so far along they may just send me to get a c-section if I am dilated. It's exciting but also so nerve wrecking

Generally your c-section is only done early if you are actually in labor or your water breaks. How far dilated you are is not a very strong predictor of when you will go into labor.

@sapphire: sounds good! Either way I wasn't even dilated! I got 14 more days and it'll be over
