i wear glasses full time because my eyes get too dry with contacts. I only wear contacts when i'm going out, so once or twice a month. i want to get lasik! my optometrist told me not to because my eyes are not THAT bad..... but it would improve my quality of life so much!

You are going to be so happy you did LASIK. It definitely improved my quality of life, even though I do need glasses for driving now (my Rx was really high and I was warned that I had a slightly higher chance of needing an adjustment. They would do another surgery for free, since it has a lifetime warranty, but I don't care to do that).
@looch: Haha-- they told me the burning smell was the machinery, not my eyes. I chose to believe them.

Contacts make my eyes ache, it makes me sleepy and I just want to close them. I also prefer the look of glasses. Sometimes I wish I had contacts for occasional use but I'm so inept at putting them in.

LASIK FTW! I got it 8 years ago and it is life changing. Totally worth it!

@mrs. wagon: I had dry eye issues, and spent my post college years full time in glasses til I got LASIK 4.5 years ago. Best decision I ever made. Wall me if you want to chat more about it.

I used to wear contacts, but I can't be bothered to put them on and take them out every day, and my eyes usually ended up being a bit uncomfortable by the end of the day. I like how I look in glasses well enough, so I don't feel like taking the extra time/expense. I do want to get lasik at some point though, if possible.

OK, wow! All the responses to this have me quite overwhelmed. I can't reply to all but here are my responses to you all!
I've worn glasses since 1st grade and my prescription is quite severe.. After 2 pregnancies it seems to have settled right around -8 in the right and -9 in the left with astigmatism. I have never had any pain or dryness ever since I started wearing contacts full time freshman year of high school. But after I had LMW one eye was always red. Still no pain or discomfort. But after breastfeeding for 10 months I started getting blurred vision at night. So I went to my opthamologist who diagnosed me with severe dry eye and contact lens intolerance. She recommended LASIK as long as I could get my dry eye under control since I'm still young enough for the financial decision to be worth it (LASIK vs. The next 15-20 years with pricey glasses) and even with my high prescription, I have thick corneas.
Also, I have been having sinus pressure for the past few years, and my heavy glasses sitting right where those sinuses are is unbearable. I feel like my face is going to explode. I have been wearing glasses full time for the past 4 months and I just can't get used to them. I even got a pair that I really love and are pretty light compared to what I used to have.. But I still am uncomfortable every day.
I used to be scared of LASIK but after all this I know it's going to be worth it. I was just so scared that my dry eye would not make me a candidate. I'm hoping they will put in punctal plugs because I've heard about great results with those from several of you!
@Foodnerd81: did you get it done while in this area? I ask because I'm trying to decide where to get it done. I've been to one practice and I'm going to visit another soon.
@Fronkinzankinsbride: I'm the opposite!! Glasses make me sleepy because I associate them with bedtime.. And I feel like contacts prop my eyes open!
There are so many of you with great LASIK stories that I will probably start a new thread!

@LindsayInNY: see above! The day I was diagnosed as contact lens intolerant I cried! They were such a big part of my life. Haha. And the thought of either wearing glasses every day for the rest of my life or paying for LASIK... Omg. I was one of those people who could pop my contacts in and out, no problem, and never needed any kind of drops. But pregnancy amend breastfeeding totally changed my body and my eyes were apparently directly affected. I haven't worn contacts in 4 months and I still have to use 4 kinds of drops, take fish oil, and use warm compresses. It will only get worse after LASIK...! But at least I won't have to deal with the discomfort of my glasses.

@LindsayInNY: There are some I can wear, but unfortunately none of them are the brands or types that tend to be comfortable. For example, I can't wear Acuvue lenses because they don't make them for prescriptions as strong as mine. I think the fact that I have very severe astigmatism has a pretty big effect on it too.

@mrs. wagon: Good luck with your Lasik! My mom, two grandmas, and aunt have all had it and were incredibly happy with the results!

@mrs. wagon: yes! I was going to offer that info. I went to tlc in Waltham and was really happy with my experience. I did my follow up with my regular eye doctor. Tlc has the lifetime gaurantee. I was going to get a second opinion but liked tlc so much I didn't. I have a couple if other friends who went there too.
I'm happy to answer any specific questions about then!

I enjoy wearing glasses and find contacts to be more of a hassle. My eyes are pretty good with a prescription of -1.25 in my left eye and -1.50 in my right. I had a retinal test a few years back and needed laser surgery to mend the tear. It was so painful and scared me from LASIK. I know that it's a totally different procedure, but I don't want to mess with my eyes unless it's necessary. Plus my eyes aren't that weak so I don't feel the need to get surgery.

Eta: womp... Just read page 2 and your update.
@mrs. wagon: have you talked to your eye doctor about your dry eye issue and complications with lasik? I only ask because my best friend had lasik and they didn't consult on her dry eye issue. It made it worse so she ended up having to get plugs put in her eyes. I don't want to scare you, just thought if bring it up. It's one of the reasons I don't know if I'll do it!!
To answer your question, I wear glasses because, like @jetsa, I'm lazy.

@Foodnerd81: awesome! I'm exactly where you are, I loved TLC, and was just gonna go with them but decided to wait til January so I could use my FSA. So since I have time, I'm gonna explore the other practice (Boston eye group), which has a more affordable option (standard LASIK as well as custom, which is the only kind of LASIK TLC offers). I have heard nothing but great things about TLC so if I don't like BEG for whatever reason, I'll definitely be there! I already have Jan. 2nd booked with them! oh also, the lifetime guarantee is a big thing for me.. Since I'm only 16 months out from having a baby I'm really worried that I will need an adjustment. BEG offers a lifetime guarantee as well but you have to purchase it, I think $200. Which still keeps it cheaper than. TLC.

@mrs. wagon: I think beg was the other one I was going to look at :). And yeah I had my evaluations done in nov to put the flex money in for January. We went to Costa Rica that March and it was so amazing to see comfortably on the beach!! As far as the adjustments, like I said I do need glasses now for driving or reading PowerPoint presentation type things, so they would do the surgery for free. But minor adjustments like that are harder to get exactly right, per my eye doctor, and the glasses for those times are such a minor inconvenience that it's not worth the risk of surgery, however tiny. Just my two cents on the lifetime guarantee thing.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@Foodnerd81: that is very good to know. I think I'd rather get a nice pair of glasses for driving, etc. in a low prescription than risk an adjustment, so maybe the lifetime guarantee isn't worth it. Definitely something to talk about with beg.

@mrs. wagon: if you have VSP eye insurance the cover a pair f glasses or sunglasses every year as long as your order them through a new doctor, rx or not. I got coach sunglasses for almost nothing, without a prescription. Another nice little perk.

@Foodnerd81: interesting! We have eye med but I thinknvsp might be available too.

I just prefer the way glasses look on myself. I've been wearing them since I was 12.
Have you considered PRK? When I informally talked to a friend of a friend who was a glasses wearing LASIK surgeon, he said he would do PRK on himself. I thought that was rather interesting.

@mrs. wagon: Yikes! I *pray* that pregnancy doesn't change my eyes or I don't know what I'll do... I don't think I qualify for Lasik quite yet (very nearsighted plus a decent astigmatism in both eyes). I just switched contact brands so I'm hoping that solves the problems I've been having (eczema-type issues, ooziness from the inside corners of my eyes, etc.).
@wonderstruck: I've maxed myself out of a lot of contact brands and I fear there aren't a ton of options left at this point. I just switched brands and they seem a ton better. I would love to do Lasik but don't quality for it (very nearsighted and decent astigmatisms). Come on science, advance some more please!!

I always wanted to wear glasses, and when I found out I had become nearsighted and had a moderate amount of astigmatism, when I was 15, and needed to wear glasses, it was actually a good day for me! I could not wait to get them and have always enjoyed, wearing glasses. I also think I look better in glasses.
I did try contacts at the urging of my sister, and I blew away my eye doctor when I put them in and took them out without any problem on the first try. He was so stunned he made me do it two more times and after I did it, without problems; he told me in all his years in practice he had never had a patient do what I just did and was sure I had worn contacts before! However, I soon realized they weren't for me and I actually missed wearing my glasses, so I ditched the lenses and have worn glasses ever since.
I also have no interest in any vision correction surgery because for me it's not worth it and I love wearing glasses!

I wear mine full time because it's easier to focus on conversations when I am also not trying to focus on seeing clearly. My eyes aren't that bad, but with a stigmata everything is a little blurry and out of focus. I like the sharpness and clarity I get with my glasses.

@mrs. wagon: so did you get the lasik?! Lol. Super old thread!
I only wear glasses part time for eye strain issues so glasses are a fun (necessary) accessory for me but DH had lasik before his deployment and looooves it. I forget he wore glasses for the first few years of our relationship!

My eyes started getting so bad that I had to wear gas permeable contacts in 6th grade. I wore those until I was about 20 and then my eyes couldn't handle it anymore. I tried soft lenses but I couldn't see as well and my eyes were dry and irritated all the time. I don't do lasik because I want them to try it out on another 100,000 or more people first. Basically, I'm scared.

@blackbird: I did! It's been a little over a year now. Best thing I have ever done for myself, EVER! Totally life changing. My severe dry eye is completely cured and my vision is wonderful. I would do it again in a heartbeat!!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@mrs. wagon: That's awesome! DH was one of the few who had major dry eye as a side effect of the surgery and it took about 2 years to go away, but he said it was still better than not having it done!

@mrs. wagon: I am so jealous. I want to have LASIK so bad and am not a candidate due to my retinas not being strong enough. My prescription is -11 and I would do anything to see without contacts/glasses!

@mrs. wagon: I have been getting dry eye symptoms that come and go. One day I think it's back to normal and then the next day it comes back. How did you get it under control for LASIK approval?

@Kimberlybee: just thought I'd let you know what they had me do to improve my dry eyes for Lasik
So constant contact use and sitting at a computer or reading papers all day made my eyes super dry. It's crazy how much dry eyes affect your vision! At the doc office they out all these refreshing drops in my eye and I could read the letters that I couldn't see just a few minutes before bc my eyes were dry.
So anyway, they made me use prescription eye drops (i think it called Restasis). And I had to take a few vitamins - I think fish oil and some other one. And I did eyelid wipes twice a day (basically exfoliates your eyelids). I did that for a few months and they would test my tear production. It improved enough that the doc felt comfortable going forward with lasik. Once I had it done and after the first few days my eyes felt totally normal and I've had ZERO dry eye issues. I never feel the need to use drops or anything. I think just the fact of not wearing contacts improved my dry eye issues

@sandy: Yay, thank you so much for this information! So relieved to know there is a possible solution for this problem. Thanks again friend!

@Kimberlybee: Hi! So here are the things my ophthalmologist had me do to get my dry eye under control.
1) No contact use
2) Restaysis twice(?) a day
3) Artificial tears every hour
4) GEL drops (basically ointment) at night
5) Steroid drop for 2 weeks (but you can't continue with this because you can have a severe rebound... which I did!)
6) Fish oil supplements
7) Warm compresses multiple times a day
I had to do this for months to get my dry eye under control. After I recovered from my LASIK I sometimes use artificial tears in the morning or before bed, but in general my eyes are completely healthy!

@mrs. wagon: Thanks for the info, my right eye is going through dry eye issues and I will probably have to follow these steps too. I have an eye dr appointment tomorrow so hope I can get it under control. It's such a weird feeling in my right eye.
