Before kid, it didn't really matter how much time I took. I had a bunch and never ran out. Since kid it seems like life is one big PTO need. I'm taking less than originally planned - the 23rd and 27th. We get the 26th since Christmas is on a Sunday.
What are you taking off around Christmas?

I had planned on taking the week of December 26th...but I'll probably go in the office 2 days at least now. School is closed that week and we're not doing any camp or anything, my husband is also taking time off.
There's not a lot of choice once you're on the school calendar.

We get the 23rd and 26th since Christmas Eve/Christmas are on Saturday/Sunday. I also get the 30th/2nd since NYE/New Years' Day are on Saturday/Sunday. I have two discretionary holidays that I have to use by the end of the year, so I'll use those for the 27th/28th, then I'll take one vacation day for the 29th.

I work full time (I run my own design studio) ... I am taking roughly 10 days off, and paying for childcare for 4 days. She's usually at a preschool 4 days per week, and I don't see myself being able to take 2 full weeks off.

My time off begins the 16th, I return the 27th. Vacation time is use it or lose it and I usually have a decent amount left at the end of the year.

Oh yeah, our childcare is closed the week between Christmas and New Years, as well as the 22nd and 23rd. So my husband will be home with her the other time.

We get the 23rd, 26th, 30th, and 2nd off. I am taking the 27-29 off. Then I think starting my leave on the 3rd. I just need to call and see how the "up to two weeks before official leave starts" works. They usually let us leave around 2 on the 22nd.

None, although we get the 23rd and 26th off. I am going to try to take a day off likely next week, too.
I have about a week of PTO that I have to use or lose before the end of the year (and then another week I'll roll over into next year), but I doubt I'll be able to use that week before the end of the year. Thems the breaks some years

My employer is closed on the 23, 26, 30, and 2nd. I am not taking any additional time off.
I love how quiet it is around that time (no students or faculty--I work at a University) and I can get a lot done. We also don't have kids yet and my family is local so no extra holiday travel. I'd rather save my precious few days for something else!

Our office shuts down the week between Christmas and New Years, last year I still had to go in one day, but I think this year I'll be able to take the full week off.

Both school and daycare are closed for 2 weeks, so I am taking off both weeks. I'm self-employed, so at least it's easy to take off.

My son's daycare follows the local school district schedule, so it's closed for TWO weeks. Pretty annoying. I'll be home that whole time because my husband started a new job recently and does not have many days off.

Nothing. I have to save all my leave for when I go out on maternity leave in April.
That being said, I'm taking a few extra work at home days, so I only go on tomorrow and next Tuesday, and WAH all the other days.

We get the 26th and the 2nd off as federal holidays but I'm not taking any other days. I'm pregnant and need to save my days, plus the office is quiet over the holidays and traffic so much lighter - it's actually not a bad time to get some work done.
DH is a teacher so he'll be home with DD on the days she doesn't go to daycare.

I'm taking off Dec 22 - Jan 2. Three of those days are holidays and the rest vacation. Daycare is closed most of it, but the first 2 days are all for mama (mostly holiday prep though).

Im off starting next Wedneaday through the New Year. 
Every Friday in December I have taken the day off and it's been lovely having a shorter work week. Next year I want to plan better though.

I'm not going to work 12/23-1/2 and I am psyched! I feel like I've earned it, having pulled many 60 hour weeks in the past few years. This will be the longest amount of time I have spent with DD since maternity leave (so...talk to me on day 4 
)

Well I work 30-35 hours a week, but i'm taking a week off. My kids do not have school Dec. 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, or Jan 2. So I'm taking most of that time off - though MIL is going to watch them 27-28 while I work. So, all in I'll be taking 6 days off.

I will be off 26th-2nd, and only have to take off the 27-29. The other days are federal holidays, and my compressed work schedule day.

Just the week after christmas. Now with an elementary student we have to probably look at some camps because we can't take 2.5 weeks off. They go half days this week W, TR, F and are out the next week weeks and dont go back until the 4th!

Well our kids daycare closes the week in between Christmas and New Years so I have off on the 26th (work holiday), my husband will be off 12/27, mom will watch them 12/28, I have off on 12/29 and 12/30 and then work holiday on 1/2.
@t.h.o.u. @mrsscb I thought one week of daycare closure was tough but 2 weeks that is really hard. Some people don't even have that much time available to take off work. Hope you can find a solution that works (and it's not too stressful)

I have the 24th-27th off just based on my usual schedule and the holiday and then the 31st- 3rd as well. Our daycare is closed the 23rd and DH will be taking that day off because I didn't know about it in time. We're not traveling so it's plenty of time.

@Canoli: @MrsSCB: I think thats pretty standard for most grade schools to be closed 2-2.5 weeks.

Just the actual holidays. My employer (hospital) doesn't allow any PTO between the holidays. The kids' daycare is closed that week, so Hubs will take Tuesday but then ILs will watch the kids Wed-Fri.

@T.H.O.U.: yeah I guess you are right. I was thinking daycare only. My son will start kindergarten next year so I guess I should start thinking of an alternative for then.

My company only closes for the holiday, or the 26th this year. I'm taking the 23rd in addition. So is DH and the kids get to go to the dentist
My elementary kiddo has off the last two weeks of the year. She'll head to daycare for all of the days we are working. It's really our only option. DH can only get one day off (he doesn't even get the 26th) during the holidays. The joys of working in the wine and spirits industry. Everyone wants their alcohol for the holidays

@T.H.O.U.: I think that varies widely state to state. Where I live, school is only closed the week between Christmas and new years.

@looch: Thats not too terrible. Here each county/district can set their own calendar.
3 half days, 2 full weeks off and then Monday the 2nd is a holiday (roll forward of new years day) and then Tuesday the 3rd is teacher inservice day. So students are out until that wednesday.
I guess it would also vary if youre a year-round school. My sister has just the 2 weeks off for Christmas but they have a full week fall break, the full week of thanksgiving off and then a full week spring break. We dont get all that.

@T.H.O.U.: I have no experience with year round school, but I would agree that adds a level of complexity. I honestly wasn't prepared for dealing with the public school calendar, so I suggest anyone that has to deal with it beginning of next school year look at it as soon as it is published and plan accordingly. I stalk the school system website, lol.

@looch: Yes! Its totally something parents should start thinking about and considering! Daycare closures are tough but it only gets worse in grade schools!
