"Oh! I thought you were just getting fat!" to a pregnancy announcement.
SIGH.

I would want to say with a smile and in the sweetest tone possible, "Oh, I thought the same about you!"

At 20 weeks I was told "don't worry you could still just get away with looking like you are fat". I'm normally like 115lbs, my belly was huge! I was so offended!

@Mrs. Oatmeal:
@AmeliaBedilia: I would totally go there if it wasn't my mother who said it.
@Mrs tartan: Wut. Why do people even think that is a compliment??!
@renee: @swedishfish: @birdofafeather: @Leialou: @MrsMccarthy: @jhd: @LAZB: @Smurfette: @FaithFertility: Word, ladies. Somewhere there needs to be an etiquette class where people are taught to say, "You look fabulous!" as a catch-all response phrase. Seriously.

Aww, sorry! My closest childhood friend said this to me a couple of years ago!

@Espion: gee thanks Mom! Does it make you feel better if my mom's reaction was just "you're going to be busy!"

@cmomma17: Ugh! I would totally reward that with a "No shit, Sherlock"!

@cmomma17: @Espion: Our moms should be friends. My mom said, "Well I know I told you guys to wait a while before you had kids, but I just read that children of older fathers are more likely to be autistic, so you have my blessing." WTH?!

My grandmother's response to finding out LO would be a girl: "I knew it because your butt is so big! It doesn't do that with boys."
And the only time she had seen me before the scan I was still wearing non-maternity clothes. In a size 2.

Oh man, I feel your pain. My mom told me I looked like a sausage one day when I was about 12 or so weeks along. She tried to back pedal and say I normally look like a tube and now I look like a sausage... I told her to just stop talking.

@Mrs. Coral: Uh, thank you for the compli-sult? Yeow! Sometimes I wonder where I learned the concept of social grace...
@Weagle: For my first pregnancy, my grandmother told me she thought I "let myself go" after marriage. Jigga-WHA? I'm a perfectly average size 6/8, and I wasn't even in maternity clothes yet when she said that! Maybe I need new mirrors.

There was a woman at my work who said that exact thing to me repeatedly while I was pregnant. Some people!
