Why all the fuss with pregnant women not being able to eat it? I thought if a cheese is pasteurized its okay ? Pretty sure it's my favorite food in THE WORLD!

My understanding is yup, if it's pasteurized you are AOK, so most cheese you can get at a typical grocery is no problem.

Ugh, don't even get me started in how dumb so many of the pregnancy "rules" are. It's just gone way too far.
Yes, Brie made from pasteurized milk is totally fine I ate a couple raw milk cheeses while I was pregnant, but I'm kind of rebellious like that!

My doc said it's fine as long as it is pasteurized, so I've been eating it.

@heartonastring: rebels unite!!! My folks were drinking Chateauneuf du Pape on Sunday night with dinner, and yes, I had a taste or two!! And Brie, lots of brie!!

According to my dr, so long as its pasteurized, it's fine. Thank goodness cause I've been stuffing my face with it for quite some time!

I ate any and all pasteurized cheese while pregnant, both times. I love Brie!

Pasteurized is cool, and you'd have to look pretty hard to find unpasteurized cheese in the US! Chow down, fellow Brie-lover!

The grocery stores I usually go to have fancy-schmancy cheese counters so there are lots of raw milk options...I just double-check that I'm not choosing one of those, and happily enjoy my pasteurized cheese

Yes, as long as you don't buy raw cheese at the farmers market you're fine (and its a very good chance youre fine eating raw cheeses since the rest of the world does it). Grocery stores here really can't sell unpasteurized cheeses, so haha suckers who avoided Brie - more for me! Nom nom nom, I ate my weight in Brie when I was pregnant.

I ate any pasuerized cheese. Dh managed to buy a raw cheddar that looked so good though

I ate Brie when I was 3 weeks pregnant with my dd when I was visiting Paris.

Cheese was one of the only things I could keep down! My doc said almost all bries and camemberts are pasteurised nowadays (unless in Europe buying the really good stuff) so it was fine. I lived on Brie and crackers both pregnancies. No two headed babies

But don't you always here pregnant women complaining they can't have Brie/soft cheeses? Or that they're going to have a huge cheese plate after they give birth? Why is that?? I always thought it was strange since I pasteurized cheese is rare in the US

@heartonastring: I broke so many rules and ONLY followed what my midwife said!!
I ate brie!

I think if it's pasteurized and fresh, soft cheese is absolutely fine - I definitely ate it while pregnant. I probably wouldn't eat soft cheese that's been sitting in the fridge for awhile (since bacteria seems more likely to grow in nice oozy brie as opposed to say, a really hard sharp cheddar)...otherwise, go for it! Same goes for things like deli meats, smoked salmon, etc. My doctor, when pressed, always told me to open a new packet, eat what I wanted to, then let my hubby finish the leftovers.

@Mrs. Pen: me too! And the only thing my midwife said was not to consume too much caffeine (or smoke or drink, obviously). She pretty much gave all the other rules a big eye roll!

@prettylizy: um, heck yes, that is some delicious wine! I did that too, on occasion, while pregnant! Did I miss your announcement? Congrats!

I ate Brie from Europe, heck I even ate sushi, so I didn't follow the rules. In fact, the only rule I was told to watch was a certain type of lettuce that grows really close to the ground. Everything else was fair game.

@luckypenny: I think people don't realize pasteurized is okay so they avoid Brie altogether! Details, people, details!

@prettylizy: oooh sounds delish! i would've had more than a taste or two i've had a few tastes of wine, but never more than 1/2 a glass and only good wine (if i'm only getting a 1/2 glass max, i'm drinking the good stuff!)
I can count on one hand the number of rules i've actually followed, because i honestly think the spinach i eat in my salad every day is more risky than the soft cheese, froyo, deli meats, etc. and i'm not giving up my salads!
