@aprk: good luck and hang in there! It was a long week for us but K grew a lot during that growth spurt!

@aprk: Growth spurts are so much fun! Hang in there.
What bottles is everyone using? We have Avent, which R has taken before but now won't. We tried a pumped bottle and then formula last night. Wondering if we should try something else.
I just wish one thing could be easy with her.
Sorry I keep complaining, just so easy to do all my venting here!

@Smurfette: aww sorry Hun! I saw your other post before I went to bed. We've used Tommee Tippee from the start with no problem. I like the nipple shape is closer to a breast.
Lately I use the Medela bottles that came with my pump because I can just express a little bit of milk in their smallest container and give her Zantac mixed with it. She doesn't have a problem with that either, but I noticed the nipple collapsed once when she was almost done.
If we were going to try more bottles, I'd try the Comotomo and mOmma (lanisoh) bottles for the nipple shapes.

@shopaholic: Thanks! I think if we don't have success again by this weekend, I will go buy one of every kind at BRU on Saturday. I am having to skip dinner with friend tonight since I would be gone too long and I am afraid she won't take the bottle for DH.
She slept pretty good last night. Slept for an hour and half, woke up, but DH got her back to sleep. So I jut had to feed at 1 and 5 and now she just woke up.

@Smurfette: haha, I used to play Candy Crush, but I don't want to pay for more levels or connect it to my Facebook, so I had to stop! And I know what you mean - cluster feeds don't always work for Xander either.
And R is soooooooo cute!!!!
Awww, sorry about the shots and the car ride home! I'm not looking forward to Xander getting his shots at his two-month visit. I can only imagine how upset R was! But it's for her own good - just remind yourself you're being a good mom for her, even if she doesn't know it yet!
I have no bottle advice for you - we also use Avent and haven't had any issues...
@shopaholic: I hear you, girl. I definitely lucked out with Xander. He IS an easy baby! I feel bad talking about him because the only trouble he causes me is a bad latch, and even that's getting better!
@aprk: My doctor did tell me the mini pill isn't as effective as a combined BC, but that as long as I'm breastfeeding while on it, I'll be fine. She said if I start supplementing heavily with formula or stop breastfeeding completely, I'll need to go on something else. And I still haven't had sex yet... too scared to be hurt! Hubs and I might try this week though now that I have birth control!
Oh my gosh, the two week growth spurt had me at my wit's end! Xander wanted to nurse constantly with HOURS!!! I thought my boobs were going to fall off!!! Luckily, after three days, it was over! Good luck to you!
So ladies, I have to say, I'm in a pretty good mood today. It's been exactly one week since I was ready to throw in the towel with breastfeeding and we're still doing it! Not only that, but I just went 24 hours without feeding Xander on a bad latch! My nipples actually don't hurt right now!!!

I feel like I killed the thread. Where is everyone? How is everyone doing??
pomegranate / 3452 posts
@Adira: I am still trying to figure everything and barely have time to look at my phone!! Certainly not like I used to. We have family in town so it's even harder, but I'm alone pumping now so I've got a few minutes how is the BFing going? Hopefully you continue to have no pain!
Andy and I are doing a little better feeding. I'm trying to get him to latch and "practice" as much as I can before bottle feeding but realistically it's only once or twice a day. I'm hoping once our house is empty and my husband goes back to work it'll just be the two of us hanging out, probably mostly naked, lol, trying to make it work!
ETA: I squeezed into real jeans today! It feels amazing not to have on those damn maternity pants anymore.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: LOL! It was all that bragging about your easy child
@aprk: I am jealous, my pants are still too tight, have a muffin top with them. Course it might be all the chocolate chip cookies I have been eating.
I think the Reflux medicine is working. She doesn't seem to be in as much pain. Now if only it would make her sleep. Last night it took us 4+ hours to get her down to sleep. Every time she would fall asleep, she would wake herself up. Rough. Thinking it is 6 week growth spurt.
Does anyone know how to get a baby to self soothe? I think that is the biggest issue with the car seat. She gets so worked up, she can't calm herself.
I have had a bad couple days, resulting in me crying and eating too much junk. I just hate being stuck in this house. Raining today so we can't even go on a walk wearing her.
pomegranate / 3452 posts
@Smurfette: oh make no mistake, I have a crazy muffin top, I just don't care! Haha. I SQUEEZED into them for sure
Glad the reflux meds are working. Sorry she's still having trouble staying asleep. Andy had some trouble earlier this week too - I'm scared if the 6 week spurt. He just seemed to have just found his fingers and sucking on them helps. Not sure how to encourage the self-sooth though.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aprk: Breastfeeding is going okay! We still have the occasional bad latch and then I'm in pain for hours, ugh! But the majority of his latches seem to be better! I do think my pump aggravates me though... I started pumping again a couple days ago and I felt more sore, so I decided to take today off again. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I go back to work if this continues to be a problem. Maybe I need a bigger flange...
Oh my gosh, good for you putting on real jeans!!! I have yet to put on anything besides sweatpants. I'm still too scared to try on pants and have them not fit. I haven't lost any weight in the 7 weeks since Xander was born... I just started working out this week, so hopefully I can fit into real clothes before I go back to work.
@Smurfette: Awww, sorry to hear about your struggles! Glad to hear the reflux med is working though - that's definitely good! Sorry to hear about the struggles to get R to sleep though. Is she super fussy when you are trying to put her down for the night, or just WIDE AWAKE? Xander definitely doesn't sleep as much as they say is normal for a baby his age, but he's okay being awake for hours, so we just let him stay up.
I wish I had advice about how to get them to self-soothe...
pomegranate / 3452 posts
@Adira: a different flange size might work wonders for you! I hope so. What sort of lanolin/cream are you using when you pump? The jeans I have on are my big jeans, and they just barely zipper ... I'd rather wear yoga pants but we have company at home. None of my regular clothes fit, that's for sure.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@aprk: Yeah, I'm not really sure what's wrong with my pump, or maybe it's just me. I've been using Lansinoh lanolin. I've also been putting olive oil on the flange where my skin rubs against it, but I guess that hasn't really been helping. So frustrating.
So... I tried on my pants! Just as I suspected, they don't even button. I think I might be wearing maternity pants when I go back to work! Stupid pudgy belly.
pomegranate / 3452 posts
@Adira: my belly is so soft and doughy. I feel "skinny" until I sit down lol

@aprk: Yeah, I know what you mean. I compared my belly to jello the other day.

I gave Vi a paci yesterday, and she likes it! My boobs are so happy. lol
She got through the car ride to the midwives, and grocery shopping, and then slept through the night with only ONE wake up to nurse!

I keep forgetting to check in! Ah!
Things are okay in my neck of the woods. Seems like Em has decided to conform to the rest of the family. She definitely seems to have her days and nights down. She wakes up for the day about the same time Henry does, between 7 and 8. She's even started takomg an hour long nap or better about the same time bog brother goes down for his naps. I think that's mostly because it's the only time Henry doesn't harass her.
As for night sleep, she takes a bottle between 8 and 10, sleeps in the cradle until about 1. I change her diaper, then she and I camp out in the guest bed to nurse. We nurse and sleep until about 4 or 5 when she wants a bottle. Em eats 4 ounces and then back in the cradle until 7 or 8. Sometimes we nurse in bed and doze together a little but usually we have to get up because of Henry.
Eating wise, she still likes to nom on me more than a bottle but she's started to get more frustrated at the breast lately. I'm aftaid we're just going to have to start givig her bottles exclusively in the next month or so. Em's been having some really bad gas and bubbles, despite how much we burp her. Hasn't spit up in weeks so not sure what the deal is.
Still in size one diapers. Still wearing 0 to 3 and 3 month clothing. Fun fact: Em looks cuter in her older brother's old onesies than she does in any of her 'girl' clothes. More feminine. It cracks me and Gordon up.
She's gotten used to the swing. Still content in the car seat. Haven't tried baby wearing her although we did order a Beco Gemini. Looking forward to trying that out soon! Getting out with both babies is fun - Henry rides in a cart with Gordon pushing and Em rides in her car seat, clicked in her stroller with me pushing. Having the stroller in the back of my car and both car seats doesn't leave much room for purchases, though.
And I think that covers everything! My postpartum visit is the 23rd, her 2 month and Henry's 15 month is the 8th. We'll know more then about weight and such

@Arden: this is me jealous!
We had another epic fail with the bottle. Trying again tonight. I hate wasting the breast milk!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Arden: Only one wake-up??? Jealous! What time did she go to bed and what time did she get up for the day?
@NaturallyCathy: Em hasn't spit up in weeks??? How did you manage that? Xander still spits up every morning without fail! Also, sounds like Em is a pretty easy-going baby, like Xander. I've heard second-babies tend to be like that, though I suspect ours will probably be a terror since we already have our easy baby.
@Smurfette: Sorry you're having bottle issues. It's so frustrating to waste breast milk!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: so I tried when she was waking up and she took the bottle from me. So luckily we don't have a nipple/bottle issue. I think for awhile, till she gets more use to it, we have to get her before she is really hungry. Cause once she starts crying she only wants the boob.
How long can y'all leave LO in the bouncer/swing/etc? I am beginning to think this is our issue with the car seat. She only likes things/spot for 20 mins max and then she gets bored or something. Is this normal?
She did sit in the car seat with the pacifier for about 15 mins today. I didn't have her strapped in. She is so cute with the pacifier, she sucks it so hard and then causes it to come out. I think once she hold onto it better, it is going to be my sanity!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

@Adira: Busy the past couple days getting ready for our trip up to Mammoth and then in the car for the drive. It's too hard to reply to this thread from my phone when I want to type long replies! Oh and KUDOS to you for keeping up with BF'ing for over a week since you thought you were going to throw the towel in! Of course, do whatever you need to for your own sanity, but who would have thought huh? Hope the latching keeps getting better for you!
@aprk: Yay for your jeans! I feel like I've regressed with my pp weight loss. I actually got down to 4 lbs less than pre-preg weight, but I think my new-found sweet-tooth and trying to just eat whatever, whenever is starting to catch up with me as my milk supply from BF'ing is stabilizing. I definitely feel like I'm getting a growing muffin-top - definitely the sitting vs. standing difference is really sad. I promise myself to be better after this weekend's trip.
@Smurfette: Yay! I'm glad R's reflux meds seem to be helping with the pain! I noticed a difference in her fussiness pretty quickly too! I also add a little bit of probiotic powder to the milk & Zantac - think it helps a bit too. Our doctor recommended probiotics.
I don't have any suggestions on the self-soothing. I know that a lot of people say they self-soothe when they find their hands and K has always known where her hands are. Not sure if she finds them soothing though.
@Arden: Smurfette and I are officially jealous of you and Vi now and giving you a green stink-eye! Hahah! Actually, K will take a soothie and goes between sucking on it ferociously (I think when she's stressed out) to spitting it out and giving ME the stink-eye (when she just wants to be held or something).
@NaturallyCathy: Sounds like Em is a sweet, easy-going baby! Glad you ordered your Beco Gemini! That was my top 2 contender too! I think you need to post a feminine pic of Em in her brother's onesie!
* As for us - our first road trip to our vacation home yesterday was a great SUCCESS! I'm so thankful K was such a good girl so that DH didn't have a bad first experience. He always stresses so much about taking her anywhere, traveling, etc. He thinks everything will be near impossible with baby, so she proved him wrong (at least for this first trip)! What is a normally 5 hour drive (if we just stop once for the restroom), actually took us less than 6 hours! I told DH it actually was faster WITH K than any trip we took while I was preggers. Because I'd normally need to stop so many times for the bathroom and to get food. She slept for almost 4 hours before waking to nurse and change a diaper. Then slept the rest of the way and started crying only as we were getting off the highway exit! I didn't even want to get food or stop for bathroom breaks because I didn't want her to wake up! The only problem is that she doesn't like me talking in the car while she was sleeping! Music was okay. DH talking was okay. But every time I would say something she'd stir, let out a cry, open her eyes to look at me, etc. Hoping our drive back home on Monday is just as easy.
I also had my 6 week post-partum OB visit yesterday. All looks good and I was cleared for sex. When we'll find the time and energy though is a different thing. I also decided on the Mirena IUD (Thank Mole!) IF the insurance company covers it. Otherwise, at $800, I'm going to just go with the Mini-Pill. They told me it'll take about 10 days to confirm whether my insurance will cover it.
K's 6 week growth spurt hasn't been as bad as the 4 week one so far. A lot more feedings ~ 1 1/2 - 2 hrs apart, though she's been feeding for shorter amount of time each time. K almost NEVER sleeps in the day. So far today, I've gotten 2 separate 20 min. naps. How does everyone else's LOs nap during the day?
bananas / 9973 posts
@Smurfette: Do you have anything for her to look at on the car seat? I have this toy bar thing my friend gifted us and K has become REALLY aware and alert in the past couple of weeks. If I put her in the car seat when she is calm, she will stare at the toy bar for probably up to 10 min. It has a musical thing too, so sometimes the music will entertain her for another minute or two. I also have been training K in her car seat (in the car & stroller) with the Sleep Sheep On The Go. I think she's associating the white noise with the car seat and it kind of calms her too. Yesterday, on the car ride, after she passed out, I tried to turn off the sleep sheep and she would stir, wave her arms around, etc. until I turned it back on. Only when she was totally passed out that I could turn it off.
Glad R is starting to take to the soothie. Did you try the WubbaNub? K was REALLY liking hers today. She managed to suck on it for like 4-5 min. and every-time it fell out, she would root around and actually be able to find the tip sometimes!
Oh, and 20 min. is the top max I can leave K in the bouncer if she's awake. The swing, less. The car seat, less if it's not in motion.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@shopaholic: Way to go K on the car ride!!
My doctor told me to not give her probiotics. That there was no need for them if I am BF. The only thing I hate about the Zantac is giving it to her 15 mins before she eats. So it can be a problem when she wakes up hungry. I think that we are going to start just giving it to her, 3 times a day, whenever. Not like she gets it before every feeding anyway.
R will nap during the day. I have to hold her till she is out out, but once I put her down, she will sleep 20-30 mins. Unless I hold her, then she will nap about 2 hours in the afternoon. She is a pill at night if she doesn't get at least one really good nap in.
I have tried numerous toys hanging from the car seat. Nothing seems to hold her attention. When she is ok in the seat, she just looks outside. I think that I am going to BRU tomorrow and going to look for some kind of white noise and see if that will help.
I did buy a WubbaNub and that is how she has taken the pacifier today. So thanks!! She looks so cute holding onto the little elephant.

@Adira: Em never spit up more than a few times in a row a few weeks after she was born and we just haven't really had much of an issue with it. Nothing special. And as for mild, my first was much more mild than my second. I guess I forgot to mention how when she's awake, about 10% is happy, 20-30% is content (not crying, not breast feeding), 10% is breast feeding, and 50-60% is spent crying and/or screaming for no apparent reason. She's a lovely little piece of hell
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@shopaholic: I would post a picture but DH and I agreed not to post pictures of the kids. I'd have to get special permission and probably a Gold membership so no one could see them just by flipping through the boards before he'd let me.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@NaturallyCathy: I love that, a special piece if hell.
R took a couple ozs of formula tonight. See how she does since it was milk based. If tummy is ok over the next couple days, this Mommy is eating dairy again!!!

@Smurfette: Oh it's true. DS is his father's son - even tempered and a joy. DD is her mother's daughter - sweet to strangers, hellish to her parents. At least I'm getting more sleep (*knocks on wood*)
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Glad to hear you had some luck with the bottle!!! Definitely getting to her before she's screaming hungry is a good idea. I know when Xander gets like that, I have trouble feeding him anything! It's so hard to get them to latch on or do anything when they're crying!
Xander really likes his swing, so I don't have any advice. He actually naps in it during the day because it's just so convenient for us. And he seems pretty content to just sit in it for a while as it swings and listen to the birds chirping. Sorry that's not helpful...
Oh wow, I don't think I realized you gave up dairy! That's so amazing of you! I think if Xander had an intolerance, I would give up breastfeeding altogether! I'm way too selfish to give up something, haha. You're such a good mother!
@shopaholic: That's awesome that your trip went so well and K slept through most of it!!! That's funny that the sound of your voice would wake her up though, haha. Maybe she just doesn't want to miss out on anything Mommy has to say?
Xander doesn't really sleep during the day either. I usually get two or three 30 minute (or less) naps and maybe one nap that's longer, depending on the day. But he's really not much of a napper!
@NaturallyCathy: LOL!!! Thanks for the percentage breakdown! Sounds like Em isn't as easy as I thought! Bummer about all the crying!
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Adira: I used to get told by other mothers to enjoy Henry because he would only cry when something was wrong - dirty diaper, needed to be fed, or something scared/hurt him. I was also told the first one is always easy, which is why people have a second one. They're tricked into thinking the next one will be easy too. I should have listened to them
But seriously, she'sa handful of trouble but that's just because she has to contend with someone twice her size for a y attention (in her mind). So she has to be that much louder and that much more demanding.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@NaturallyCathy: Wait the first one is easy?? I am in trouble then. Or R might be an only child!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@NaturallyCathy: @Smurfette: I always thought the second one was easier, because they just get used to not being #1 right off the bat, so they tend to be more go-with-the-flow. Of course, there are always exceptions! We should do a poll!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I forgot to mention ladies - Hubs and I finally did the deed this week!! It both hurt more and less than I was expecting, haha. When we first started, it definitely hurt - felt frictiony and sore, despite using lube, but it faded pretty quickly, which was nice. I'm curious if it will still hurt the next time, or if I'm back to normal now! Anyone else get busy with their significant others since having the baby?
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Adira: @Smurfette: Maybe it's just a southern thing or maybe it's just because people couldn't believe, looking at him, how good he was... And yeah, I always thought the second would be easier too. After all, I've had the experience of the sleepless nights, the projectile vomit, the explosive poops, the colic that never. ends. But instead, although I feel more confident with her since I've already had my baby crash-course and I can function on less sleep because I've had a whole year of interrupted sleep, she's just a little... tricky. Tricky is a nice word. What worked with him, doesn't work with her and it's hard enough juggling one running around and one who can't lift her head very much.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I have my PP checkup on Monday. So I should join you in the post baby sex world. I already warned DH, go slow, lots of lube and don't expect it to be good for me. All my friends told me the first three or four times aren't good, but then sex has gotten better for them. Said the big O is more intense. I know I am going to be so nervous for the first time but I can't wait. I miss that part of our relationship.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Yeah, I was REALLY nervous, which probably didn't help, because I was probably tense. Hubs seemed to think since it has been seven weeks, I'd be totally back to normal. He thought I was being silly by insisting that we use lube and go slow! Then when we started and I was all "Ow ow ow" he realized I wasn't just being paranoid, haha. The hardest part is actually finding the time to do it! We have to find a time when Hubs is home from work, Xander's sleeping, and I'm not trying to sleep myself!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I am ready wondering when we will have time. Usually I go to bed as soon as R does.
And yes, I gave up dairy at week 2 to see if that was causing her gas and spitting up issues. But I don't think it is at all. I so want pizza and ice cream.

Do you guys remember how many oz your kids ate at 2-3 weeks? I don't know when to expect for E to be ready to take more than 2 oz at a time
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@blackbird: About 2 ounces of formula, sometimes 2.5 but usually never more than 3. That's been my experience with both kids eating every hour or two.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Oh wow every hour or two? Mine eats every 3-4....she still struggles to eat the last 10ml, though
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Adira: Okay so apparently I'm a sex fiend. We DTD week 3 and week 5 postpartum. Without lube both times but I wish I had had it the first time. I was very 'ow' afterwards. Pp check up is next Tuesday and I'll be gettig the Mirena put in, so that'll be interesting!
And sex gets easier and a little closer to normal but it may never feel exactly the same again.

@blackbird: Mine are chubby bunnies who like food. Not over weight mind you but they liked food the first few weeks, then slowed down to every few hours.
