Sooooo I work with DH's aunt and DH is her favorite nephew. She's obviously thrilled that we're expecting and I think it's really sweet.
BUT lately she's taken to calling me Mom or Mama, etc. And she does it at work. It kind of makes me uncomfortable! I don't know if I'm just being weird but I think I'd be okay with DH or my mom calling me those things but someone who isn't as close using those titles for me before our son is even born make me feel really awkward!! Is it just me?

Some people at work called me mama before the baby came, it didnt bother me since I knew I was about to be a mom soon.

I haven't really gotten this... Just a few times and I can't even remember who said it, I just remember what was happening. It feels a little weird but it doesn't really bother me. I'm not even sure how you can put a stop to this.. Wish I had some advice for you!

I get it from my friends, who are already moms. They usually call me "mama" or something like that. I think it ends once the baby is actually born... because I don't hear them calling each other "mom" or "mama."

It bugged me, too. Now I finally AM a mama--the nurses in the mother-baby unit kept calling me "mama" and it weirded me out but at the same time I think I needed it to help me adjust.

My parents and ILs have a time or two each. My grandparents called my mom "Mommy" when I was little, so it actually made me a little bit happy.

Not pregnant yet, so I can't speak from experience, but I think she just means it as a term of endearment and excited anticipation. I'm guilty of calling pregnant ladies mama:) kind of like how people refer to a woman who's getting married as a bride even though she isn't the bride that day but she is going to be a bride on a day in the near future or calling her mrs. xyz because it's a new exciting name.
Sorry it makes you uncomfortable, I'm sure she doesn't mean to! Maybe you could just tell her you're not used to it yet so you don't realize she's speaking to you when she calls you by it and if she could stick to using your name.

Like Mrs. Bird, I don't have children yet but I sometimes call my expectant friends "mama," as a term of endearment. Good to know that some people are bothered by that!

i personally LOVE being called mom and mama BUT i think if it makes you feel uncomfortable you should maybe not do it yourself but have a friend or co worker clue the boss in.

@Running Elley: this was my biggest pet peeve when I was pregnant. A co-worker would only call me "Mama" and it drove me CRAZY!!

I had a colleague do this all the time when I was pregnant and I really hated it. He also did so in a somewhat condescending tone of voice, though.
To me, it ticked me off because it seemed like ALREADY everyone's view of me was shifting to "mom" and here I'm thinking I was/am still ME. I mean, we don't do this to dads, ya know?

Maybe I should clarify...I do like when my best friend or my sister call me momma and i think it's really sweet. It makes me excited! I think it's just when people that I'm not REALLY close to do it that kind of weirds me out.....people who I wouldn't be sharing intimate details of my life with normally, you know?

At my work, they did this all the time. There was one person that always said, "Hey, little Momma!" It was sweet, but awkward the first time I saw her after my miscarriage.

If it was a co-worker and it was occurring at work, I would feel uncomfortable. If it continued, I would probably ask her to stop. I already had to ask an employee to stop asking me personal questions about, and to stop commenting on, my pregnancy. I feel the workplace is for work, not for talking about things or making comments that may make someone feel uncomfortable.

It happens to me at work on a daily basis. However, none of my peers or bosses (or my assistant) ever say it to me, it comes from the other support staff. With that in mind, I cut them a lot of slack because I know that they are just being sweet and are genuinely happy for me. But it did catch me off guard at first and took a little while to get used to.

We havent told many people, just close friends and family. Yesterday my best friends husband called me Moma. Was the first person to say this to me. def caught me off guard...hmmm....yup dont know about that.

I only call my friends "mama" or "baby mama". If I don't know them that well, I won't. I get a lot of mama's too but usually just from my friends.

I don't mind if close friends or family call me "mama" (or even bee friends!) but total strangers calling me Mommy freaks me out. Mom is ok - but Mommy makes me think of creepy adult videos.
