I like that article. I also LOVED being able to leave 2 hours after birthing bot of my babies. I needed to be home in my bed being a mom.
It's funny, with both of my babies, I was back up and at em and out of the house the next day. And I get a ton of flack for it. As someone who is prone to depression if I'm idle, why should I be home in bed if I feel perfectly well? Anyways, just my 2 cents. And yes I need a live in kraanzorg.

Oh man, that sounds heavenly. I would have LOVED to go home 3 hours after giving birth. And the kraamzorg- yes please!

The system is similar here. You can leave after 3 hours (or stay for as long as a week if you like). Many women I know chose to have a woman similar to the kraamzorg come help for the first 2 weeks. It's definitely a different mentality compared to my birth in the US!

I delivered in Europe...Count me out on going home so soon, I stayed in the hospital for the full 4 days it was allowed and we talked about staying a fifth! Following my vaginal birth, I couldn't get out of the bed for 2 days, no way I could have climbed the stairs to my apartment. I am all for the woman's right to choose in these situations...you want to go home, great. You want to stay, great. It's when someone else makes the decision that I bristle.
I did have a midwife that visited, twice, within the first two weeks, she was a lifesaver. Make no mistake, we paid for the services via our very expensive health insurance. And other countries pay for these services via their higher taxes. This can't be excluded from the conversation.

I would have had an emotional break down if I were kicked out of my hospital 5 hours after giving birth and in the middle of the night.

This sounds a little horrifying to me! Being kicked out after only a few hours?? The Kraamzorg sounds awesome, but she didn't show up until the baby was already 12 hours old! My baby would be starving to death if I didn't get immediate support!!!

Yep - sounds very similar to giving birth in Australia! It seems to be a uniquely American perspective to view pregnancy as a medical condition to be managed, vs a normal course of life that doesn't require much intervention unless there are concerns.
I loved giving birth in Australia and especially going home four hours after DD2 was born. I stayed in the hospital for two nights with DD1 but it was totally unnecessary. I far preferred being home and having a midwife stop by every day.
ETA: In Australia, you do have the option of staying in the hospital for three days following a normal birth, or five days for a c-section, if you want, it is completely up to you, which is the beauty of it all

Yeah my issue with going home early is that E's PPHN wasn't caught until a couple of days later in the hospital and based on my experience, I would have to rely on ONE person to catch it, versus a medical team. Unusual circumstance, though, but considering it can go south fast, not one I can brush off as NBD

Some aspects of this sound great, for sure. However, I am one who wants a few days in the hospital. My recovery was brutal and I did not want to be dealing with that at home. It's funny, some people want to be home right away when they have their second. For me, my daughter will be nearly 3 when my second is born and I am looking forward to having 2 days of being alone. My husband is perfectly capable of looking after the 3 year old at home while I recover.

Agree with others that I want a kraamzorg! I found the article interesting. There are parts that sound nice and parts that make me glad to have given birth in the US. Like it sounds like there the default is no epidural (which seems like all sorts of terrible) and if my hours old newborn is coughing up blood then yeah, give me the hospital setting.

We have baby nurses here... Just have to pay an arm & a leg for them! My old boss had one that lived with them for like 2 weeks.

I was an American expat who delivered in the UK. It was awesome. We had a midwife come to our house after we went home.
They had a very similar "you're just pregnant" mentality. It was very laid back. They don't weigh you or harass you about weight gain. It was great. Would 100% give birth overseas again.
