I had an unscheduled early scan similar to the anatomy scan around 16.5 weeks. The ultrasound tech announced that we're having a boy but didn't show us. She seemed certain. At our official anatomy scan around 18 weeks, the little guy was shy and wouldn't show the goods. Now DH is insisting we can't tell anyone because he needs a second opinion. I think he is secretly holding out hope for a girl but also the first ultrasound tech missed a couple things that they found just a week and a half later.
I thought the chance of mistaking a boy for a girl was really low. Anyone ever experience that? We were team green last pregnancy so I'm excited to share this time and now we are essentially team green again!

It's really rare but it does happen and especially in cases of really early ultrasounds. It happened to my husbands friend in Florida. They were expecting a boy and BAM girl!!! But most likely you do have a boy.

I have had friends that have messed up both. Told them it was a boy, no denying it---it was a girl. Swore up and down someone was having a girl---baby came out and it was a boy. No way to totally know Until they come out. I would always tell people she was still a girl at this time.

I had a coworker who was told on three separate occasions that they were having a boy... And it was a girl! I'm with your DH on this one - I'd get a second opinion!

My cousin's wife had an early scan and was told girl; three weeks later she was in a car accident and found out they were expecting a boy. He's seven months old today.

My BFF had the reverse happen to her. At the early scan, the Dr said it was a girl then a few weeks later, the ultrasound revealed it was a boy. It was her 3rd boy and I know she was disappointed at first but she got over it quickly.

I had a friend growing up whose parents were told she was a boy. They said they thought she had a hand down there during the scan. Though of course, this was nearly 30 years ago, so not sure if ultrasounds have gotten better about that sort of thing.

I got in a really minor car accident when I was 14 weeks and went to the ER just to be sure. She said it was a boy but didn't show us. The anatomy scan showed he was a boy! And sure enough he came out all boy

I think techs are usually right when they say boy, even at 16 weeks, but I would just go and get an elective u/s to be sure. With our first, she was super shy at the anatomy scan, so we went to an elective place to find out. They have small packages priced around $50 if you just want to find out the sex.

I was told girl at 13 weeks both pregnancies. First time around we did have a girl and this time we've had two other people say girl as well ( I'm 19 weeks)...so I'd be pretty confident in your shoes!

I would be pretty confident. Of course there is always a chance a tech is wrong because they're people who make mistakes, but I don't think they usually tell you unless they're sure. When we had our US our little girl was being very shy and for the first hour the tech was saying "Well I think its a girl based on what I'm seeing but I can't tell you that for sure." She explained that to confirm a girl for sure she has to see specifically 3 lines between the legs and she hadn't seen that yet. Then once she finally got the shot I could see exactly what she meant. Doesn't seem like the sort of thing techs would be guessing at if they weren't sure.

I've definitely heard of people finding out girl only to find out later on that they were actually having a boy. My sister and a friend were both told girl at one point incorrectly. Knowing that I think even if the original tech was wrong I wouldn't believe it if someone told me girl!

@SAHM0811: We are going to have another ultrasound so I guess we'll ask for a third opinion then just to appease DH. I do agree with you that the tech was most likely right about sex but one of the things that the tech was wrong about was the fact that she said the placenta was fine but is in fact low lying which is kind of big. Because of that I need another ultrasound around 28 weeks.
@Mae: I don't think that's really something to guess about either. And she brought it up, not us which is what makes me think that she was positive that it's a boy.

@skipra: my friend that it happened to had been trying and trying for a boy. They had 4 girls at this point. Dr and everyone assured them it was a boy. Had an ultrasound done at 20 weeks. Boy. Baby was born 20 weeks later. Girl. No denying it. It happens more than you think.

I think you're ok but i can see as to your concern. I wonder why she wouldn't show you what indicated boy to her. I was told at 13 weeks for both pregnancies that I was have girls. Tech was right with DD1 and well find out later with #2 but we are confident she was correct. She showed us all the angles as to why she is saying girl and was extremely confident. She said even as early as 13 weeks a experienced tech knows what they are looking at.

My friend was told she was having a boy, and then a girl and then told it was definitely a girl when she went for a double check and then she was told after that that it was a boy! She's due to have her baby any day now. We'll see who was right for sure, soon!

We're pretty confident in the fact that this LO is a boy, but when DS and I were putting S's things in storage he did say, "well, at least we have all this, if the ultrasound was wrong!" Smart kid.
This is also why I buy a few neutral items for the newborn size...JUST in case.
