My reaction and my family members' reactions make me SUPER cautious about vaccines. I have a genetic susceptibility to vaccine and drug reactions, and I don't want my child to suffer the debilitating systemic diseases my family has had to suffer through. Autism is, to me, a secondary worry to autoimmune failure and seizure disorders.

ETA: My family members never mentioned that their diseases were vaccine reactions until my parents mentioned that mine was. Be careful.

I worry about everything. But after talking to our doctor about it we decided to do the vaccines.

@banana: Those changes are temporal related but not causally related. The time at which babies get that vaccine is also the time at which PDD or autism spectrum begins to become noticeable... So they are linked in time, but not in cause, if that makes sense.

Remember the adage: correlation does not equal causation

It seems too scary to put the LO at risk of caching a life threatening disease. I would rather deal with autism if that were to happen.

@banana: There are very few of us who are in any way uncomfortable with vaccines. We do try to be accommodating by providing alternative schedules... but let me tell you, most of us would do anything to get vaccines into kids!

I WOULD strongly encourage a modified schedule. I don't think one single vaccine is likely to cause autism, but giving three or more at a time is a higher risk.

@MamaMoose is correct, the study was actually a fraud and there is no correlation between vaccines and Autism. I work with Autistic kids for a living and I can tell you there was actually a bunch of them that were not vaccinated and still developed Autism.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and it shows up differently in a lot of children. What looks like Autism in one child looks like something else completely in another. ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is more of an umbrella in which a large group of symptoms and behaviors are put under so that they are explainable and have a name. It would make sense that because it is so different in many children that there is no one thing that causes Autism. Vaccination is one of those things that for the most part is no longer considered a contributing factor because the study that supported it the most was faked and not true.

There have actually been studies done that suggest that there is bigger link between the use of pitocin and children with Autism. They believe that it's because the average contraction on pitocin is longer and harder than a standard contraction and may be causing some subtle changes in the baby's brain due to mild oxygen deprivation. I think that people are just desperate to find a single cause so that they can cure their child or so they can try to prevent it from happening, but I don't think we will ever get one single reason for it.

@banana: it's still a fairly new study being done, but it started when this doctor noticed a huge increase in his patient's children being diagnosed with Autism. Turns out he was a big fan of dripping the pitocin during labor and all of a sudden he went from having 10% of moms having Autistic children to almost 60%. Now more formal studies are being done. Because ASD tends to be a behavior and developmental disorder, some doctors definitely believe that the baby getting mild oxygen deprivation over and over again throughout labor is not enough for anything wrong to show up right away but to actually show up later as the baby develops, which could explain why you typically don't see symptoms until the child is around 18 months.

Bumping this thread! We went to an AMAZING vaccine workshop last night (presented by a doctor, at our midwife's office).

It was so informative. He said, again, that there is absolutely NO link (as far as science is concerned) to autism with mmr. He's more concerned with parents & doctors who decide to give their kids several vaccines at once (especially ones that are live-virus). He encourages NOT delaying the schedule a lot, but does endorse separating vaccines if you're worried about reactions, etc.

It was really amazing, and calmed a lot of my fears!

I am honestly more concerned about the outcomes of more and more parents choosing not to vaccinate, than I am about vaccines causing autism or other issues. There's no reason for dangerous diseases to resurface in our society when there are vaccines available!

@Vegmama: Our pediatrician supports that method (separating, with little delay). I like a healthy balance.

My only concern about vaccines is allergic reactions, and then mainly because I have a history of them. I personally would be more comfortable spreading vaccines out a bit, just long enough that it's easier to identify the cause of the reaction if one occurs. But we'll be discussing it with the pediatrician we choose and will make our decision after that.

I haven't done any research, and I don't have a LO yet, but I am totally leery of vaccines. I don't need any concrete link between any risks for me to avoid them. There is no concrete links between power lines and cancer, but I've seen enough cancer to know that i will never live under them.

I did extensive research for paper on the vaccine-autism link when I was in my speech path grad program. I must echo what Mrs. Jacks mentioned about correlation not implying causation and that often times the signs of autism and PDD were already there but parents may not have seen them until the age of the MMR vaccine. This is the main reason I have such a huge problem with Jenny McCarthy joining the View-the evidence just isn't there.

I will be vaccinating my future children without question. My husband and my family don't have a history of adverse reactions to vaccines. The diseases that have vaccines available are scary and not ones I want to tangle with.

pro vaccines 100000% but I always get nervous after P gets his shots but no way in hell am I going to let unwarranted advice and fear affect my child's health. honestly, I don't even feel comfortable with my child around other children who are not vaccinated before he is old enough to have all his shots (logically I know its impossible to protect him from this) but it really bothers me when other people's decisions have the potential to affect my child's life negatively.

@Vegmama: Those live virus vaccines really pack a punch. They're the only ones my daughter has had an adverse reaction to -- fever for a couple of days.

We follow the recommended vaccine schedule though. It's supported by research, so I'm comfortable with it.
