Yep! I think ultrasounds weren't that accurate back then? Or maybe they didn't really do gender scans? I forget, but I don't think my parents had an option to find out the gender with either of us.

Yup! They didn't do ultrasounds back then so she never had one for any of us.

Yep, I've seen my early ultrasound pics. They didn't look as accurate as they were today. In my baby book, she mentions the c-section surprise of a girl.

yes! I'm surprised my mom didn't find out with my sister who was a surprise after my brother and I.

Mine were for my sister, but my mom had an amnio for me so she knew I was a girl...but my dad didn't want to know so he was still surprised!

Yup, for all 5 of us! Now, a couple of us were before it was easy to tell gender, but even after that they chose not to know. DH & I are also green.

When did ultrasounds become standard practice?
She actually chose one of my brothers name because it would work for either gender.
(And I'm fairly sure my birthmom was team green for both of us too).

Yes by force Mexico doesnt really do ultra sounds, so with my four oldest siblings my mom pretty much had no prenatal care and either delievered with a midwife or delivered herself with my dads help...she is my hero...
when she was pregnant with me she didnt get prenatal care until she was 8 months pregnants (granted that is how far along she was when she came to the states) and she went to tour the hospital she was going to have me at...Dr.'s decided to do a checkup because she hadnt received any care at that point, well my mother was in the shock of her life when they not only told her she was in labor, which she thought they were crazy, and she was not having one but two babies..she did go into labor that day but just had me...she has always wondered why they said twins when they did the ultrasound...

She was! I don't think ultrasounds were common in China in the 80s for poor folks.

Yep - didn't have any ultrasounds and only found out she was having twins at 8months because my sister and my heart beats got out of sync

Yep! Both mine and DH's parents were team green for both of their children but like many of the others here I don't think it was really an option or a standard practice to do ultrasounds.
I know when I sent our parents DVD's of the 20 week ultrasound they were just so amazed. They had all seen photos of ultrasounds before but because they didn't ever have any themselves, had never seen video of a baby like that.

They were! I didn't know that until I was pregnant and they told me about how they had a boy and girl name ready but my mom changed her mind with the girl name when she saw me.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Nope! However, the doctors told them I was a boy and well... Hi!

My mom was with me and my brother. They didn't do ultrasounds then!
She had one with my sister, though, because ultrasounds were more common at that point.

They were with me (their first), but they wanted to find out for the second. They were hoping for a boy and wanted to "come to terms with things" if it was a girl...and they got my sister!

Yes, both times. I don't think they had a choice.

Yes, for all three pregnancies. They desperately wanted a girl, so I can only imagine the energy in the delivery room when I was finally born (I have 3 older brothers and my mom told me they would have kept going until they got a girl).

Yes, but only for me. They found out for my brother and sister.
All of my nursery stuff was yellow.. But my dad thought I was going to be a boy so he bought a bunch of baseball cards that year. I asked if my brother's name (a family name) was going to be used for me and they said no, but I find that really hard to believe..

Yes, as I don't think they had the choice. For some reason they thought I was going to be a boy though... maybe just the old wives' tales!

For me, yes. They didn't have a choice back then. For my brother, they were able to find out.

@illumina: My mom was convinced I was going to be a boy! She was shocked when I was born haha.

@Pepper: Mine pretty much kept the boy name they'd picked out and amended it slightly to make it more feminine!

My mom only had an ultrasound with my brother and that was because her stomach had gotten so big that they were concerned that they would have to do a c-section to get him out. His little wee wee was sticking out from his body so it was obvious it was a boy...the rest of us (3) were team green.
