@crazydoglady: My annual physical fell somewhere in 3 weeks postpartum. My discharge paper had an information section on how to lose weight since my BMI had me as Obese. Like yea, I'm going to park in the back of the parking lot so I can walk further with 10+ lbs of baby in an infant seat 3 weeks after my c-section...

So it wasn't technically a comment, but I would think the doctor or nurse could have pitched that page. I raged on the phone to my husband all the way home.

My poor friend was asked when she was due. Because she looked so huge!

Poor thing was holding her 2 week old. Like wth lady have some common sense

Older lady, Walmart greeter asked me "what is his name?" I smiled and said "oh, it's a girl, her name is ***". Then the greeter looked at my 5 day old, at me, and said "No, that baby has a boy face. Are you sure it's a girl?" I walked away without acknowledging the comment, because my husband worked there and I didn't want to make a scene.

Another time, I'm going into the grocery store with my 9 week old. A man stops me in the parking lot and tells me I have a beautiful baby. I thank him and go to move into the store, but he keeps talking to me and says "You shouldn't let people kiss your baby. There was an 11 week old in the news that died from meningitis because the mom let someone kiss her baby". I said "oooh k?" then booked it into the store.

@nutmeg36: I would have had a hard time biting my tongue, even if it was at my husband's job.

@crazydoglady: I gained sooooooo much weight, but my doctor thankfully had the sense (probably because him & his wife have 5 kids) to not tell me it was too much ever.

Oh goodness! That's so awful! It amazes me what people will say. I just think it's great that you made it out of the house with both kids - good for you! That's no small feat early on.

About two months after having my second baby, I was at the pharmacy to fill a birth control prescription...and the pharmacist stared hard at the prescription, looked me up and down a few times, then said, "You know, I really can't let you fill this since you're pregnant" as she pointed at my belly. I even had the baby with me! I mumbled something about being two months postpartum and tried to make some joke about how baby weight is harder to lose the second time around, thinking we could just move on quickly. She glanced at me again, and asked me if I was sure I wasn't pregnant (!!!) because I "really looked like it". I took my prescription back. And we now use a different pharmacy.

Just "You look so much better now!" ....while probably true, uh, I don't like the implication.

Some of these are amazingly bad!

@DesertDreams88: I had a similar one the other day. I get a lot of comments about how big my babies/kids are since they all look older than their age and are super tall. So this woman was saying wow she’s big about the baby and then said “well you were really so big when you were pregnant too” ... um ... thanks for the reminder

I read these with my mouth ajar. I just can’t figure out for the life of me why people haven’t realized the only comment to say to a new mom is “congratulations, you look great”. Or if they are still confused “what a beautiful baby”. It’s not that hard, people. It’s similar to comments towards a pregnant woman. If you are 100% sure they are pregnant “you look great”. If you aren’t sure, talk about the weather and keep your mouth shut. Jesus.

I went to see my primary care doc at 3mos pp and she gave me a talking to about how I was 26lbs heavier than the last time I saw her and how I need to lose weight. Not only did I have an extremely tough pregnancy and long NICU stay to deal with, but she actually did the math wrong and I was only up 16lbs from my last visit. I’m very aware of the fact that I need to lose weight, but I don’t know many people who have lost all the baby weight in less than 3 months. Can you tell I’m still frustrated about this?

At the children’s hospital for a bilirubin check with my baby, the woman at the registration desk asked when I was due. I was holding my 3 day old baby.

I haven’t had any ridiculous postpartum comment (that I can remember), but when I was VERY pregnant with DS I was in a grocery store and an older man looked me up and down and even told me I “would have no problem getting my shit back together.” I didn’t even know what to say, so I just walked away.

@muffinsmuffins: Not exactly the same, but at my first OB appointment when my husband and I was going over family history and everything with the registration nurse; she looked right at me and asked who the father was. Like what the hell lady!? I just introduced you to my husband. and we were still in the love struck newly wed phase, and telling about our honeymoon in Alaska, and that we weren't planning on getting pregnant so fast... But, no, this is not the father of my child that I drug to my appointment.

@muffinsmuffins: My husband wanted to be his usual smartass self and say no, it's not mine, we had to bring in a pinch hitter because I couldn't knock her up. I am so glad he just kept his mouth shut. You're probably right about the awkward moment that turned into policy.

What a rude and insensitive comment from her. I hate hearing that even when its not dealing with a birth or pregnancy. The "you used to be so skinny/so big thing" is ridiculous to me and extremely hurtful to the person receiving it. I personally don't even like the "you look so healthy now" comment. That's just me though! Maybe it doesn't bother others. I would say for me I also have gotten the "why is your baby yellow" comment too! Our baby was born few weeks early and had jaundice.

P.S. @KT326 that is so awesome things worked out like that for your friend. What an awesome guy!

(Asking about how the NICU stay is going) "but is it worse than having a newborn at home?" (implying nothing could be worse)

Um YES much worse. That was my SIL whose baby was born 3m after D, she asked me that when I came to meet her baby after having visited the NICU where D was recovering from his 2nd surgery. That comment still makes me mad and he's 5 now!

Uhhh yes, I would take anything to be able to have my baby home instead of having to drive X minutes/hopefully not hours just to SEE my baby.
