My brother in law, DH's youngest of three brothers, is graduating this Saturday. The graduation is an hour and a half away. My due date is the day before. I have been feeling pretty good and we plan on going if nothing happens before then, but I am starting to get a little anxious--this is so silly, but Saturday is a full moon! Would you travel an hour and a half away day after your due date on a full moon? Or at all? I have a midwife apt today and will get her opinion--maybe she will make our decision for us.

Not unless I want to deliver in a hospital that's closer to where the graduation is. In case complications arise, I'd want to be where I planned to be.

I would as long as your bags are packed and there's a hospital there or along the way. I delivered at a hospital an hour from home.

I think an hour and a half is okay. It takes me an hour and a half to get home from work almost every Friday, since the whole world seems to want to drive to NYC on Friday nights.
Take the hospital bag with you.

Before I had my baby I would have said yes since my doctor's max was two hours away from the hospital. But... My labor came on strong out of nowhere! My first two contractions were four minutes apart lasting a minute each and they never slowed down. I would have died if I had to spend an hour and a half in a car laboring like that!!!

Yes but I delivered a week later and I went to Easter dinner the day after my due date about 45 min away. As long as I could mostly sit around, I was fine. BUT I wasn't having any signs of labor. I would play it by ear

No. I felt fine right up to the second I went into labor. And sitting in a car for that long when you're having painful contractions..... Not fun.

I would wait until the day of and see how you feel. If you feel "off" at all, I would not go. If you feel perfectly normal, I would go. 3 hours in a car and sitting through a graduation the day after your due date sounds pretty miserable to me, though.

I would as long as you are feeling good and the midwife thinks it is fine.

I wouldn't just because I wouldn't like the idea of being in an unfamiliar place if I actually did go into labour.

@MamaMoose: this happened to me also--no ramp up, just full on labor from the get-go, and because of that i would say no.

I'm with mslipgloss I had a blue moon baby too! I was 100% effaced and dilated to a 2. My ob said he thought I'd go into labor on my own and I did on my due date!

I would talk to the midwife obviously.
And is there a hospital where you are going that you would be ok with delivering at if for some reason things came on strong and you couldn't make the drive to your hospital? Could the midwife come to this other hospital?

@matador84: Hmmmm Due date is tomorrow and full moon is Saturday! Perhaps it really will happen?
@T.H.O.U.: I hadn't even thought that far ahead (another hospital or if midwife could go). The more I think about it the more I feel like I should just send him and make sure his cell is on so I can reach him in any event.

No because I really wanted my OB to deliver my baby (thankfully she was able to), and if I were to travel an hour and a half away that would take away my chances. From first contraction to contractions 3 minutes apart was only an hour for me! I could barely make the 15 minute ride to the hospital. However, usually you have a little more time than this

My hospital is 45 mins - 1 hour away so yes. Its not likely you wouldn't make it back to the hospital.

I wouldn't because I would want to avoid crowds and be comfortable at that stage of my pregnancy.

@maybebaby: It sounds like if you are set on delivering at your hospital with your midwife, then I would stay home. If you don't really care that something could come up and you couldn't come home, then I wouldn't worry about going. Usually close to the end, my OB gave all of my prenatal care papers in case he wasn't the one delivering.

No way...that long of a car ride when you're in labor sounds horrible. Not to mention that you'll have to probably crawl over people to even get out of the auditorium, and doing that in labor would cause way too much attention away from the graduates.

I would if you are still feeling up to it. You can always head home if you feel things are starting. Just sit near an exit our end of an isle.

Nooooo... I wouldn't. Sitting through a long graduation ceremony at 40 weeks pregnant sounds horrible. Sitting in the car having contractions sounds even worse.
I would stay home. I feel like people will understand :). Plus, DH could go, right? -
I'd stay home. Labouring in a car would be miserable and you never know how quickly it will happen for you.

I also vote for staying home - I'm already uncomfortable at 32 weeks so can't imagine 40 weeks!! If you feel up to it however, there's some good advice re aisle seat and back-up hospital plan

I probably wouldn't go. I'm just thinking about how uncomfortable I felt sitting in one place at the end of my pregnancy and I only made it to 36 weeks!
As far as moons go, I love that my daughter was born on the harvest moon (the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox). And working in a hospital, I believe in the power of a full moon!

Thanks for all the input ladies, it was very helpful! I ultimately decided to play it by ear and this AM I felt up to it and didn't want to spend a rainy Saturday at home, so we went. I brought pillows and got cozy in the car, and the graduation was really nice. Had a delicious meal with DH's family and I even felt up to outlet shopping on the way home...why not? We got some cute little things for baby boy including some absurdly impractical infant Sperry topsiders.
I am pretty wiped from a long day now, but when we got home, DH drew me a lavender bath and gave me a nice massage with mint lotion and got me in my jammies. Feeling much better
Thanks again for the input--I am sure I would be singing a very different tune if things had ended up happening labor-wise!

How nice! I know it is after the fact but just wanted to chime in that is how far I live from the hospital
