ETA: should I bring my brand new breast pump to the hospital so the LC can show me how the heck to use it, or leave it at home because it's a bulky PITA and use a hospital-grade one while I'm there? what are yall doing? and am I the last man standing who hasn't packed her hospital bag yet?
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@LCTBQE: I wouldn't bring your own pump to the hospital. Not sure what your hospital's policies are, but I used a hospital one when I was there the first time. You also may not need to pump right away.

@LCTBQE: I started packing my bag but have not finished. I do have a list of the remaining things, so I guess if I go into labor we can just run around grabbing the stuff and throwing it in the bag. We still have a lot to do, though, like unpacking the bassinet, stroller and car seat and installing the car seat
Also, we're doing a lot of organizing and cleaning. Tonight my H unboxed a new futon to put upstairs in the loft. He looked at it, then looked at me and said, "you can't help get this upstairs?" Um, no, I cannot help you carry an 80-lb piece of furniture upstairs at nine months pregnant, actually. 🙄

@LCTBQE: thanks! For some reason I couldn't remember a few things.
I would maybe throw the pump in the car and DH could run out and get it if needed. They should be able to show you on a manual or hospital grade if you need to pump. However I had easy access to the LC after birth and they showed me later.
@MrsSCB: I would have said carry a watermelon and then move it!

I'm trying to be a patient and caring mom, as my DD is already showing signs of regression and separation anxiety as the due date looms. But for effs sake- every night this week she wakes up at 4:30 crying for me. She falls asleep quickly and then I'm up for maybe the rest of the day? As if sleeping weren't hard enough these last weeks.

@LCTBQE: Don't worry about bringing your pump. Ideally you won't need to use one at the hospital, anyways. I never have needed to.
And I'm definitely hanging out here at 38+1 and I haven't yet picked my hospital bag either. I probably will this weekend. After two late babies it's at the bottom of my to-do list, though.
@T.H.O.U.: Thismustbetheplace had her baby yesterday! A girl! Just in case you wanted you wanted to update that due date list...not sure if you saw in the FB group/if you are on there.
@MrsSCB: Haha! That's funny. Men sometimes. 🙄 although I will say now that after two babies it wouldn't have bothered me to help carry an 80lb object - I routinely have to carry a 40lb toddler so I don't see much difference since the weight would be shared equally.
@OldpuebloJenn: Oh no! Not fun. That's so tough. Kudos to you for waking up with her and loving her through these moments.

@LCTBQE: Hahaha-and no, certainly not the only one who hasn't packed a bag yet! I have most of the items all rounded up in my bedroom just waiting to be thrown into a bag . . . come to think of it, there are no fewer than 3 rolling suitcases within 2 feet of my stash. I have no idea why I haven't put everything into a bag yet! I just need to add a few baby items to my stash, and I will be pretty much set. Set to wait.
@MrsSCB: WUT. And Dude. You only have to deal with the futon for a few minutes . . . I HAVE BEEN PREGNANT FOR 9 MONTHS.

Ugh, so I had my 36w appointment yesterday (along with NST and ultrasound) and it was not a great day. For one, baby girl is HUGE. She's 7-7.5 pounds already. No wonder things have gotten so difficult lately. I love the teeny tiny stage and it makes me kind of sad that I could in theory end up with a 9 pound newborn. Yeah, I'm kinda crazy.
Also, I met with the OB who's going to be doing my c-section, and I can't stand her. I'd met her a couple times before but I was told before it would be a different doctor. She was pretty rude and very brusque. When I got in the room they gave me a print out with what to expect from a c-section at my hospital. It had a lot of different info than I'd discussed with the doctor I usually see. So I asked her about it. She got really snippy with me and defensive and was like, "well the paper's wrong" and made it sound like I was the idiot. WTF lady, this is an official document your office is giving people and somehow I'm supposed to know it's wrong?
Plus, my experiences with the entire office are always frustrating. Things aren't put in my chart, or people don't read the chart. They didn't know I'd already declined the GBS test, which the other dr agreed was unnecessary. Then the doctor tried to guilt me into it anyways. They asked me to do a cervical check even though my file says I've declined all pelvic exams. And they didn't have the date of my c-section in my file, or the fact that I'd asked for a tubal ligation along with it. Then I had to move things around because the NSTs were all booked up and they said they had nothing available. And I was like "ok, you guys let me know whether I should skip the OB appointment or the NST because I'm not driving 40 minutes here at 9 and then coming back at 1:30". Eventually they managed to squeeze me in somewhere, but it's just always a hassle.

@ShootingStar: ugh, so sorry you had to deal with all of that! I feel I get similar "service" at my providers office. Since when did the patient become the inconvenience?

My cat climbed up the railing of our loft today and fell to the first floor. Probably about 15 feet. I'm glad we were home when it happened but it was so scary. He's limping on one of his back legs so I just got to the vet with him. I hope it's not too serious

@LCTBQE: re: dog, I know! I am having a really hard time with it. I mean I know that there are only so many hours in the day and that most of them will be dedicated to the baby, but I'm sure I'll be able to find some time! It's like she knows now too because she's being extra snuggly/cuddly and she is NOT that kind of dog unless you've just walked in the room for the first time!

@LCTBQE: I have not packed my hospital bag yet. Maybe I will start working on it tonight. Maybe... I didn't even think about a newborn hospital diaper bag! can you tell me what a "wet bag" is? I assume its something to put dirty items into. But are there special bags made for such purpose?
@pregnantbee: Do some people pump while in the hospital? I understand if they baby has a problem or something. But would there be a reason why a new mom under normal circumstances would have to pump on her first or second day?
@MrsSCB: What kind of bassinet do you have? I still have to buy a stroller. And yes, I need to put the car seat in the car. But oh, I forgot, I need to get a new car. Yikes. So much to do.
@T.H.O.U.: Thank you for posting this list again. You are so amazing with updating these lists. And good idea about keeping the pump in the car, just in case.
@OldpuebloJenn: I'm so sorry about your early morning wake ups. One of the things I'm fearing most is the interrupted sleep that comes with children.
@coopsmama: Good to know you didn't need your pump in the few days immediately following birth.
@ShootingStar: I'm so sorry about how things went down at your OB appointment today. That all sounds like a really crappy appointment. I hope the next one you have will bring a happier OB. You'd think these OBs would be a bit nicer to us pregnant girls.

@agold: there are indeed special things made for all kinds of consumer needs, such as a peed-on onesie
https://www.amazon.com/Skip-Hop-Grab-Diaper-Chevron/dp/B00FZGLKPI/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1469812390&sr=8-1&keywords=skip+hop+wet+bag
I don't have any diaper bag stuff at all yet, but I did pack the hospital bag this morning. and we installed the car seat, although I think probably improperly... need to re-do that sucker. I can't believe you're getting a new car!! what kind?
@coopsmama: @pregnantbee: @T.H.O.U.: thank you, I will take your advice and leave the pump at home and call our pediatrician's LC if i'm having trouble. I'm worried if it's in the car it'll warp in the heat. I keep wondering if I'm over-thinking all of this or if I'm massively unprepared. hopefully somewhere in between.
@MrsSCB: poor lil kitty, I really hope he's okay and the futon, srsly?? I started to move a stack of 5 sweaters from my team's work room table yesterday so we could have some space, and my boss was like "OMG don't lift those!!". I should have him give your husband a call
@MrsKerch: yeah labbies aren't the cuddliest, she must know! anyway surely between you and your husband she'll get plenty of puppy luv post-baby.

@ShootingStar: ugh, your OB office sounds like such a pain, I'm sorry that is so frustrating that this snippy biatch got assigned to you, but I guess what really matters is just getting that baby safely into your arms. hang in there.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@LCTBQE: Those wet bags are great especially the snap handle so you can hang it from the outside of your diaper bag and remember to wash whatever needs to be washed. I will say though I do NOT like the skip hop brand ones. The inside is basically plastic. True wet bags for cloth diaper are made with a PUL material that still allows breathability (aka stuff inside wont mildew quickly). I love the PlanetWise ones.
Is anyone else considering cloth diapers? We will be using Applecheeks size 1 part time while I"m on maternity leave.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@agold: Nope, no normal reason to have to pump. So if an issue comes up, I believe you can ask for a hospital grade to be brought in to borrow or for a manual pump to be used (and you would get to keep it). Some hospitals provide Lanolin but some dont. So if you plan to BF, you may want to add a quick thing of nipple cream in your hospital bag.
ETA - I'm not really packing a newborn hospital bag. Just the regular diaper bag that will have her stuff in it plus going home outfit.

@T.H.O.U.: ah good to know, the planetwise ones are much cheaper anyway.

Had my 38+1 week appt today. I wasn't even offered a check and I think it's because I went so long last time. My midwife said baby is happy and healthy and doing so well she sees no reason for me to be induced before 42 weeks again if she doesn't come on her own - gah. She says I have clearly handled delivering large weight babies without a problem and my fluid levels can be monitored so I guess I could be looking at being pregnant until August 25th.
That sounds horrible at this point. Oh well. One day at a time!
@MrsSCB: Oh my gosh! Your cat! Update us when you can.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@ShootingStar: Wow!! Sounds like a crappy appointment. So sorry. Is there no way to try and get the c-section scheduled with a different OB?
coconut / 8472 posts
@coopsmama: I could, but I'd have to weigh other priorities. So, I could go in the day before, but the only slot open was the 12pm one. But I'm diabetic and won't be able to eat all day. I think that's a recipe for disaster for me. Anything else will be later, later date or later in the day. So at this point I probably need to just deal with it and not let her get to me.
Regarding wet bags, this is the one I have - http://www.dearestdiapers.com/Monkey-Foot-Designs--Medium-Single-Pocket-Wet-Bag-_p_706.html. I'm pretty sure it's a medium, but it's pretty small. I actually like that it's small because I just used it for the occasional clothes that had an accident. If we had managed to do cloth diapers like I intended we would've need a much bigger one.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@agold: I think as long as everything goes well with delivery and baby doesn't have to go to the NICU for any reason then most likely you wouldn't be pumping at the hospital. If baby goes to the NICU, the nurses/dr may suggest that you start pumping in order to get your milk to come in and keep your supply up in the absence of baby.

@ShootingStar: Ugh, that sounds really not cool. I'm sorry. Sounds like the other options aren't great either.

I've been losing my plug for the past few days. I was induced first time around so this is new to me. Anyone else started losing theirs yet, or any new mamas lost theirs soon before labor began? I am so ready to get his baby OUT.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@MrsKerch: @LCTBQE: @coopsmama: Just got him home from the vet, thankfully she doesn't think his leg is broken, just soft tissue damage. They gave us a couple days' worth of painkillers so we'll just keep an eye on him this weekend. It was so scary seeing him fall I was rushing up the stairs to get him down from the railing but it happened too fast.
@agold: We got the Halo bassinet, I'm pretty excited about it. It'll be his only bed for awhile since we don't have room for a crib right now.
@LCTBQE: Your boss sounds like the woman working in our apartment front office. I was getting a package and it wasn't that large, but she said, "Do you need a cart? Are you not supposed to lift more than 10 lbs?" I was like, "I got it, it's fine," haha.

@agold: You have to get a new car? I think I do to. We just put the baby car seat in last week, and there is literally no leg space for a passenger. So I either keep my car and never take a passenger, or I trade it in, get a roomy suv, and go back to having car payments $$$
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
@T.H.O.U.: @OldpuebloJenn: we cloth diaper. We use prefolds and covers (mostly thirsties, wool at night). I had to replace some of the covers because the leg elastics were shot. May need to get a few more, but will wait and see!

@MrsBeluga: @agold: we just got a new car too. My DH drives/drove a Jeep Wrangler with a soft top, and I drove a sedan. I wasn't down with two car seats in the jeep, I only recently let him put one in there! So he took the sedan which can fit both car seats, but the bending over to buckle DD was killing my back. I joined the compact SUV mom squad. The car seat lady and cars.com both had helpful buying guides.
