@littlek: Aww - little bean!
I'm kind of worried about the no-drinking thing too. I have a few events/trips coming up with friends and there will definitely be alcohol. I am not sure how to handle it! I really was hoping to hold off on telling most friends until the second tri.
And I can't believe all of your DHs that are telling people! Haha. I would have been so upset.

@busylizzy111: DITTO. My Wondfos have all been super faint. So glad I have that digital or I'd be completely confused.

@snowjewelz: Oh I would be LIVID if DH spilled the beans to our friends this early. I think you were totally justified in freaking out. Seriously I cannot even think about that!
I totally agree with everyone on being sad about your dogs. Fortunately I think my dogs have had to learn a little bit of how to be a sibling just from there being two of them, but it's still going to be a really rough transition for them. They are absolutely our babies and we dote on them a lot. I think they'll be great with kids though - one will be super affectionate and cuddly with the baby, and the other one will be the guard dog who won't let anyone near the baby. That's my bet.
Well I think I had my first pregnancy symptom last night/this morning. I didn't even know that tension headaches are associated with pregnancy, but, you learn something new every day! I normally never get headaches so this was pretty unpleasant/odd until I googled it and realized it's a normal early pregnancy symptom. Seems like pretty much all unpleasant things in the world can be pregnancy symptoms.
I'm jealous of everyone who has a sonogram photo already! How amazing.

@theotherstark: Yeah I am also freaking out a bit about how to hide the fact that I'm not drinking for the next two months. At parties and group gatherings it's no big deal since I can just hold a beer all night and nobody gets suspicious, but I do not know what to do about work happy hours and such. I have one coming up in a few weeks with a small group of coworkers, to celebrate a big project milestone, and I will absolutely be on the spot. I'm thinking maybe I'll just eat a huge amount of food right before we go over so I have a full stomach, then slowly sip a low-ABV beer for like an hour and a half while eating and drinking water. Does that sound too risky, though? I know these first few weeks are the most important time for embryonic development.

@theotherstark: @PawPrints:
I'm totally with you both on the drinking thing. We are supposed to be having a bunch of people over on Friday for a game night. If I'm not drinking, everyone will know. I know they have non-alcoholic wine but in my irrational mind, I just want to reschedule when i'm further along.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@PawPrints: Can you sneakily order something non-alcoholic? Or be the first one to get there and order it first and maybe even tell the bartender for your 2nd/3rd drink?
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@PawPrints: I'm sure one beer would be fine, but I personally am paranoid and wouldn't do it Would you be able to go to the bar and order your own (non-alcoholic) drink? Like a club soda + lime? Or maybe speak to your server before/after you order, make sure they know you're pregnant, and just have them bring you mocktails?
Ugh. I'm going to a bachelorette party, and I just am not sure how I'm going to hide it. Haha.
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@MRSJX3: Oh man. You should definitely just get some non-alcoholic wine! Or just make your own "mixed" drinks of club soda + lime, or something At least it is at your home, so you can manage the drinks yourself!! Although I totally understand not wanting to deal with it.
cherry / 245 posts
@theotherstark: Thanks for the idea of club soda and lime!! That sounds pretty refreshing.
A bachelorette party is rough because of all the shots. Can you say you are getting over a stomach bug and you will drink but no shots? Then you can just do "special" drinks.
pomegranate / 3658 posts
@snowjewelz: @theotherstark: It would look super strange if I ordered from the bar, because the point of the happy hour is for us all to be on one tab that the company will then pay for (since it's a happy hour to celebrate a project milestone). I guess I could sneakily talk to the server but the idea makes me anxious, *plus* when my boss pays the bill at the end of the evening he'll see that the drinks I ordered were non-alcoholic.
[ETA] @theotherstark: Oh man a bachelorette party is going to be tough! I breathed a sigh of relief when I looked at the calendar and saw that the bachelorette weekend I'm attending this summer will be after we announce. Makes things so much easier.
pomegranate / 3658 posts
@MRSJX3: Personally I don't stress about getting caught not-drinking at my own house, because I find it really easy to avoid suspicion by just holding a drink all night, occasionally raising it to my lips without actually swallowing anything, and then periodically dumping some of it in the bathroom (and/or my husband will steal swallows of whatever's in my glass). It's when I'm sitting at a table at a restaurant with other people that I think it gets a lot harder.

@littlek: Hehe apparently that is the "worst excuse" according to Freckles...

wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@PawPrints: I see... That is annoying! Maybe just hold it and try not to drink it? Go to the bathroom and dump out half at some point? Or... Start out w/ a drink, then start saying you have a headache or just not feeling great, then switch to non-alcoholic?
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@PawPrints: Oooh, yeah that definitely makes it more awkward and difficult!! Ugh. Maybe just get a beer and pretend to sip it all night. Hopefully people won't notice that much isn't gone? That is a toughie. Maybe you could sneakily talk to the waitress and just get some kind of mocktail with a cool name that hopefully wouldn't put up any red flags. Haha. I doubt your boss would notice at the end, esp if it's all just one tab and you can't differentiate between peoples' drinks?
pomegranate / 3658 posts
@snowjewelz: Oh you just gave me an idea. I could order a weird mixed drink I've never had before and then hold it for a while then if anyone asks, say that it turns out it's not very good and I don't like it. And then order a soda or something.
So devious!! Glad I have a few weeks to figure this out.

@littlek: I'm staying at home right now and Tyler goes to school 2x a week. I plan to keep this up until we move and then once we are settled in September start him up again at least 2x a week (maybe 3). I can't risk an even earlier bed rest this time so I'm expecting to take it much more slowly after 20 weeks this time. Also, once we move, our parents will be 1.5 hours away and I fully expect to ask them to come and help with Tyler on the weekends when my husband works.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Regarding drinking - I don't think other people notice as much as we think they do. I have to go to my husband's work dinner tonight (with only 4 other people) and plan to order a glass of wine and raise it to my lips every so often and ask my husband to drink from it occasionally so that it isn't noticeable. With my first I never had anyone ask why I wasn't drinking (and, er, I'm a pretty social drinker).
In Vegas, @littlek: you could order seltzer in a short glass with a lime. No one will know it's not a vodka soda
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@PawPrints: Hahaha that's a good idea! Start researching weird drinks!
pomegranate / 3658 posts
@winniebee: I think it depends. I know I have several friends, male and female, whom I've heard gossip about other women saying things like "Did you notice she only sipped a little bit of her drink the other day? I bet she's pregnant." (Seriously, yes, my friends need to get a hobby.) I do think it's easier when your husband is around so he can take sips of your drink.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@winniebee: Yeah I feel like people do notice, they just don't ask you but talk about it secretly lol But if your friends just speculate and keep it to themselves, I see no harm in that!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@PawPrints: @snowjewelz: I personally definitely speculate! But I think by and large the masses don't notice. I have some friends that for sure would and others that would be oblivious!

The drinking thing is pretty easy for me. We have a strict agreement between DH and I that we will not drink and drive. So at work functions I don't drink since he isn't with me. Everyone I work with knows this. And when we are together he usually does the drinking. But honestly, since we had LO neither of us really drinks. I think I can count on one hand the number of drinks I've had in the past 2.5 years. I realize it's harder to suddenly have the rule, but it can't hurt to give it a try
As far as help, we aren't planning on any, yet. We are trying to figure out how we are going to deal with my hospital stay and LO's care. Our closest family member is a 4 hour drive away. Given that I will have a c-section, I told DH that I would be okay with LO going to daycare during the day and him being at home with her for the evenings as long as there are no complications.

@littlek: what an awesome pic! I am jealous you could already see something!
I told hubby today that "we" missed him ( he ended up staying the night at a friend's) and he was like huh? Who is we?
I said "me and the baby" and he said "what baby?"
I said "ours- I am pregnant" and he said "how do you know???"
Caught him by surprise there..
I am planning on using the AB excuse too... We will spend next week in Italy with our family normally that means lots of yummy wine....

@winniebee: are you planning on potty training T before the baby arrives?
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@littlek: I don't know. I am really going to just try to follow his readiness cues and see if he's ready by then. I suspect he will be ready by then anyhow!
