I am craving a delicious Italian sandwich from Jimmy John's! I didn't eat cold cuts while pregnant with my first, and the idea of microwaving the meat just doesn't sound appetizing. Gr!

I think I had one turkey sandwich, I brought it home, microwaved the meat tho, so not really a "cold" cut sandwich. Totally worth. I had paranoia bout listeria all the way thru my pregnancy tho.

Almost 15 weeks and not yet. For some reason the deli meat freaks me out more than soft serve, etc.
pear / 1879 posts
I did not and the very first thing I ate after LO was a turkey sandwich! It never tasted so good (and that was in the hospital!)!
ETA: I did eat soft serve ice cream during pregnancy though and that did not worry me as much.

@MrsH: my husband has his degree in food chemistry and he would NOT let me eat cold cuts because of the listeria concern being REAL, so he says.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
Yep. I didn't worry about microwaving it either. My OB said that the likely hood of getting listeria from Cold cuts was the same as getting if from spinach and canteloupe so he said eat whatever you'd like in moderation.

@Meggo5: Me too! Nothing like a turkey sandwich after giving birth at 3am!

I ate Jimmy Johns once a week my entire pregnancy. My OB was totally fine with it...so I had a beach club, hold the sprouts and mayo, every Friday

I haven't without heating it, but our triage nurse told us as long as you heat the lunch meat once before eating it its fine, so you could heat it up then put it in the fridge to get cold again.

@grizz: mmmm sounds sooooo goooood!
@creativemomma15: didn't know! i'm out to jj's! dueces!!

I pretty much lived off of turkey avocado sandwiches for the first 20 weeks of both of my pregnancies.

@prettylizy: Mine too. Dr. said eat what I wanted. So I did. He even said sushi in moderation and tuna in moderation. Just no drugs, cigarettes or alcohol. I didn't eat sushi but it was mostly because I was grossed out by the idea of fish. Slightly off topic but.... I stayed in Japan for a summer and pregnant women there eat sushi every day. They have very healthy babies and live very long lives so I wasn't worried.

For first child, no. For second child, I just could not hold off Subway cravings. I had one once a week, and not even toasted. I figured it was a very busy Subway with the meats being replaced frequently and it was fine.
honeydew / 7909 posts
Yep... but only once without heating it (It was from Panera cuz I wasn't thinking).

@matador84: Enjoy! I was pleasantly surprised by it too and glad I can fulfill some cravings this time around!

I totally eat cold cuts. Not a lot, but when I want them I do. I'm picky about the meat I eat in general, and I'm not worried about the listeria.

@matador84: I took a food chemistry course in college - my term paper was the top ten reasons I should be dead according to this class.

I literally think about Jimmy John's all the time. For the last 6 weeks I have known that I will be eating JJ's after having this baby. However, I'm paranoid so I'm trying to hold out. I have horrible luck and I don't want to test it.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
I did not but I'm paranoid about being that 1 in 1,000 pregnant lady to gets it.
honeydew / 7463 posts
No but mostly because meat gives me the heebie-jeebies while pregnant! And I don't eat cold subs to begin with.
The closest thing is that I have sausage on my pizza.
grapefruit / 4823 posts
all the time! with DS I craved turkey sandwiches/subs all the time.
kiwi / 506 posts
I stayed away from them because of the listeria risks but also because of nitrates. I read some random study a couple months in that freaked me out about those ... although now that I'm not pregnant I've gone back to loving my cold cuts and cured meats!
@matador84: @Meggo5: My first meal after getting home from the hospital was a turkey sandwich ..... and it was the best.thing.ever! I'm 7 months pp and I still appreciate cold cuts 100 times more than I ever did pre-pregnancy
@regberadaisy: this is how I felt about everything. My husband is a statistician so he always tells me how the odds are this or that ... and my response is, yeah ... but someone has to be that 1 person out of x # of people. {{i'm such a worrier. *sigh*}}

@rrachael: hahahah exactly!!! There was that ONE person! Glad I'm not the only crazy.

I voted yes but I could probably count the times on both hands. I have definitely cut back a lot but if I am craving it badly, I go for it!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
Not often, but I did every now and then. And I didn't worry about it.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Yes, I do in moderation. I know it doesn't make it better, but I only eat it from a very clean and reputable deli. I am usually too exhausted to make all three meals for us on the weekends so we'll order lunch from here and I get so sick of grilled chicken!
watermelon / 14206 posts
Yep. I didn't worry about it. I didn't eat it daily, but Jersey Mike's saw a lot of me during pregnancy!
watermelon / 14467 posts
I've definitely cut back on my deli meat consumption, but if I get it myself from the deli for a particular meal, I'll eat it.
pomegranate / 3768 posts
Nope! I did crave a turkey sandwich from time to time but I never had it. I figure if I can give up coffee, wine and sushi (so so sad!), I can give up deli meat and hot dogs!
pomelo / 5820 posts
I didn't, and it was soooo hard. I work across the street from a jimmy johns, I love their subs!!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
ate it all the time. the dr was fine with it as long as it wasn't from a sketch place
persimmon / 1331 posts
I have. I'm 15 weeks and can't even count how many sandwiches I've eaten. I don't buy grocery deli meat (I got sick off of it once in college, don't want to risk that now) but I'll buy from reputable places like Panera and Jimmy John's.

Yes all the time, with my doctor's clearance! She said she has never seen listeria in a pregnant woman in her 20 year career so she said she to take that with a grain of salt.
grapefruit / 4136 posts
I ate Jimmy John's twice a week for 3 months! It's all that sounded good

I ate cold cuts pretty often while pregnant with E! And I've had them a few times this time too.
