I read on the TSA Blog that pregnant women can opt out of walking through the scanner and request a pat-down instead. We're heading out on vacation tomorrow and I'm 24 weeks pregnant. What have other people done?

I opted out and will again when we fly this week. I don't think it's that big of a deal, but it's pretty easy to opt out, so I figured why not?

I go through the old school metal detector as opposed to the new scanners.

I opt out. Leave a little bit of extra time Togo through security because you sometimes have a bit of a wait for a pat down.

@Truth Bombs: same here. I told them I was pregnant and they let me walk through the old school scanners.

I heard the scanners are pretty safe... still I was paranoid and skipped.
I will say it kind of stressed me because for some reason we get to airports early but we were running a little behind and when I requested a pat down instead, there were no female TSA agents at that security point. It felt like forever and a day for the female agent to get there. We made it but I think I easily get stressed out about missing things.

I flew a bunch of times and I opted out. My dr said it was safe to go through the scanners but if I want to opt out, I could. Opting out did take longer because they had to wait for a female TSA agent to be available and the pat down itself took a few minutes.
I fly I think often so it was a change of pace for me.

I opted out. Like pp said it can take a little longer depending on how busy they are and how many female TSA people they have.

I was curious and looked some stuff up.
This is interesting.
"The agency says each scan emits less than 1/1,000 of the radiation given off in a standard chest X-ray, or the equivalent of two minutes of high-altitude flight."
http://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-walk-through-airport-screening-machines-while_2616.bc
So if you are flying more than 2 minutes, you are already exposing yourself to more radiation then you would have going through the scanners.
edit : Another one
"We get exposed to radiation all the time from being on the ground, and certainly flying increases that a bit. But the kind of radiation you're exposed to [during air travel] doesn't have much penetration into the body, so it's unlikely to ever cause fetal exposure at all."
http://www.webmd.com/baby/guide/top-7-pregnancy-myths?page=2
Like I said... I was still paranoid. I probably still would have gotten patted down even with this information.

I went through them at 11 and 14 weeks. When I flew at 25 weeks, I didn't think about it, but the TSA agent waved me over to the metal detector so I did that instead. I don't know if I'll request a pat down when I fly home tomorrow.... this thread has me thinking.
The last time I got a TSA pat down was about 5 years ago and I was really put off by how detailed / invasive it was.

I went through because my doctor said that we get more radiation from the plane itself than we do from that machine.

I traveled quite a bit when I was pregnant with my first. The first time I traveled (I was not really showing), I asked to be opted out and it was no big deal at my home airport. Granted it was ATL Hartsfield and it's the "world busiest."
On my way home, I again asked to be opted out at the New Orleans airport. It was a small terminal and not that many people. It took 20 minutes for a female TSA agent to come and another 5 minutes to guide me into an off location room. The pat down took another 10 minutes, which was highly uncomfortable. I almost missed my flight and had to run to my gate to make it in time.
Afterwards, I just opted to go into the scanner.

I'm flying tonight and didn't even think about this! I'm still early (5 weeks) and getting used to being pregnant! Lol. Hmm not sure what I'll do...

I just flew this weekend and opted out. I'm not a huge fan of the body scanners anyway, so being pregnant put me over the edge. I did have to wait an extra 10 minutes in O'Hare for them to find someone to give me a pat down, which was annoying.

No I went through it multiple times. Quicker than a pat down and the radiation exposure is so low it wasn't even on my radar.

@catomd00: Ditto! I went through it every time. No problems and much quicker than pat down. Especially since we travel with DS. Ain't nobody got time to wait around longer than necessary!

With my last pregnancy I always opted out, with this one I'm flying next week and I think I'll just go through the scanners.

I opted out, not a big deal to have a pat down and why risk it? I didn't find the pat down's invasive-not like they are groping you or anything. I flew a lot and probably had 5 pat downs.

I went through them. I work with radiation, to me the risk at the airport is so minimal that I didn't worry about it.
apricot / 378 posts
I opted out each time. It was a little longer and I travel a lot for work, but for piece of mind, it worked for me!
eggplant / 11287 posts
I went through them at 6, 12, and 25 weeks. I did not opt out. It's pointless to opt out because you're already exposed to way more radiation when you're flying.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: It's not pointless if it makes a mama feel less stressed/worried!
nectarine / 2173 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: just because you are exposed to more when flying doesn't mean you should be exposed to even more. The flying might not be that avoidable but the scanner is. The machines are still but that well studied and no long term data exists.

I flew a ton my second pregnancy and I opted out once and it was a pita waiting for someone to of me down.

My OB told me it was completely safe, but I didn't go through while I was pregnant (I flew twice while pregnant with DS). I got patted down instead.
