@Crystal: I had a bunch of bloodwork last week (rubella, full blood count, etc), but I know I'll have more bloodwork done at my NT scan (HCG and PAPPA, at least). My scan is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon - eek!

@ladybee: maybe I'll have more to do? I'm so confused, but I'm sure the Drs know what they are doing!
@ms.line: maybe that's what I'm doing too. They didn't mention any more bloodwork, but I may be in for a surprise! I can't wait to hear about your experience!

@Crystal: I don't plan to share the name with anyone including HB! I'm afraid of people's reactions influencing our decision.

@californiadreams: really? I'm not good at keeping a secret so I could never.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@ladybee: yup, i did that for LO1. i was tempted to put the name on my baby shower cake at one point, but decided against it. The last thing i want though is tons of people i don't know commenting if they like it or not!

Hi other February Moms, I've been lurking for months and have finally decided to say "hi".
Every time I was going to introduce myself, I had a spotting episode, so I hesitated. I'm hoping those are behind me now.
This was a complete accident pregnancy and was so not on my radar that I didn't realize that I was pregnant til I was 8 weeks along! I had a lot going on at work and didn't notice missing my period! Duh!
I can't decide whether or not to tell my work. I'm up for a big promotion in 5-8 weeks and I don't want to jeopardize it, but at the same time it's going to be pretty obvious in another few weeks, as I'm already starting to show. Stressful!
Anyway, hello!
Location: Ontario
EDD: Feb. 10, 2016
How far along: 13 weeks-ish
First child? Second. I have a 2 yr old.
First doctor appointment: weeks ago
Any symptoms so far? Constant nausea for the last two months. I think it's subsiding.
Who have you told? Close family,

@Ellie: welcome! I hope that you don't have any more spotting, I know how scary that can be.
@ladybee: I can keep a secret, but I definitely tell HB most things! In fact, our families don't even know we are expecting!
@californiadreams: wow! That's amazing resolve! I can understand why you'd keep it to yourself, but please don't be too mad if we keep begging you to tell us!
We ordered our announcement cake! I'm so excited!
pear / 1770 posts
@Crystal: Yay, be sure to post a pic of your cake! I can't believe you've managed to keep it a secret from your family. We haven't told DH's family or my extended family, but there's NO WAY I could have made it this long without telling my dad and brother. Also, agreed, I spill most things on HB.

@Ellie: welcome and congrats! I can relate, my first pregnancy was a total accident and i didn't know until 8 weeks either! where about in Ontario are you?
@Crystal: lol, i won't be mad, but i won't budge either ;). when are you doing your announcement? at your birthday?
grapefruit / 4028 posts
@ms.line: I thought it would be much harder than it is to keep it to ourselves. It's kind of nice to have our own little secret!
@californiadreams: lol, I respect that! Yep, we're announcing on my bday.

We told out parents last week and then had a family bbq yesterday and told everyone else. We brought them into the spare bedroom to show them the new paint job and told them it was going to be the nursery. Lots of happy screaming and hugs. It was a fun moment! Although my SIL thought I was pg for the last month or so since I told her I had a stomach bug. And my other SIL had a dream I was pregnant 2 days before I tested - I played it off at the time.

@fancyfunction: That's so cute! I'm not very close with my aunts/uncles/cousins, so I'll probably just let my dad tell them. And we're estranged from DH's family - it's a bummer!

@ms.line: sorry to hear that but hopefully the rest of your family will be excited!

@fancyfunction: Oh thanks! My dad and brother are very excited, and I'm thankful for them. Just a bit jealous of your and @crystal's big fun announcements!!

Did anyone get a cystic fibrosis carrier screening? If so, how long did it take for you to get results back? I've been waiting two weeks and patience is NOT one of my virtues!

@Ellie: Welcome!
@ms.line: I probably will. I have my appointment on Thursday so I will know more then.
We told our close friends this weekend and we are telling DH's family on Thursday after our NT scan. It's finally starting to feel real now that other people know!

@Ellie: Welcome!
@ms.line: We're not doing any testing at all, unless it's for something we can actually help with in-utero. We just decided that knowing something is wrong wouldn't do anything except make us worry. I'd rather have a happy pregnancy. But I totally understand wanting to know as well!
We've been telling tons of friends the past week, and it's been so much fun! I did love having the secret for a while, but seeing people's reactions has been awesome too. Everyone is really excited for us, and it's making it all feel even more real.
We also toured the L&D floor at our hospital yesterday. I wasn't in love with it, and still thinking about home birth. I have to do my research! Meeting my midwife for the first time tomorrow, so I'm excited to ask her all my questions!
Officially in the second trimester now, woohoo!

@fancyfunction: your reveal sounds great!
@ms.line: thanks for adding me to the list!
@californiadreams: I'm in the kawarthas.
Went to a check up with my nurse this morning. She tried the fetal Doppler for the first time today (on me, not her first ever ) and it was probably the longest 5 mins of my life as she tried to find the heartbeat. There were 2 nurses with me at the time and you could feel all 3 of us straining and hoping to hear it. So tense, especially because of my recent spotting. When she finally found it, one nurse cheered! I was so relieved. I balled on the way home from the stress and relief of it all.

@Ellie: Sure thing! I'm sure it was such a relief to hear the HB!

Question-- for your regular appts (no ultrasound), where does your OB meet with you?
This is my 3rd pregnancy with a new OB and she always has her appts with me in her actual office. She sits at her desktop comp with my e-chart and asks me the run down of usual questions and types as I talk to her.. Is that normal now?? I'm all for technology but found it kind of weird haha.
My old OBs would always see me in an exam room, even though they didn't necessarily examine me.
pear / 1770 posts
@mauxie: My midwife has an exam table IN her office, but for most of the appointment I just sit at her desk and talk to her as she types stuff into her computer!
pear / 1998 posts
@mauxie: My meetings have been in the exam room, but there is a desk against the wall with a computer on a swivel and two regular chairs that I sit in. I meet with her nurse first and then my ob comes in. I'm only on the exam table if she is actually doing an exam.
But, I remember at my pediatrician that I went to until I graduated college would have me come into her office to talk before/after the exam in the exam room. I think it is more dependent on the size of the medial group and the preference of the doc rather than technology.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@Ellie: not close to me then! i am not even sure exactly how far that is, but i am in GTA.
@mauxie: with my last pregnancy, i had an OB and we would meet in his office. He didn't have an electronic chart, but would write things down on paper during our meeting. I didn't think anything of it. When I take my kid to his regular ped appts, his doctor (who is amazing) goes through a checklist on the computer and fills it in with us there as he goes through, i still don't mind.

@ms.line: @TemperanceBrennan: @californiadreams:
Thanks for the input, ladies! It's a large practice and the other OB I saw for LO2 (same location) always did the consults/questions in an actual exam room, so I was just thrown off by the office-room only thing. I've seen her 3x now and she has pretty much yet to touch me in any way since the nurses and techs seem to do it all. My past OB would still do doppler checks here and there, herself. My plan is to switch OBs after my 20 week appt anyway (so that I can deliver closer to home) but I'll stick with it for now!

@fancyfunction: awww! How fun!
@ms.line: we aren't particularly close to our extended family, so I'll let my parents tell them. I'm sorry you didn't get to do a reveal, but it sounds like your dad and brother are thrilled for you! Yep, I just did the CF test. The lab told me my dr would know within 3 business days. I'm assuming I won't get the results until my next appt though. Thank you for keeping our list updated. ️
@TemperanceBrennan: do DHs parents know yet? Or is this the reveal to the extended family?
@saboma: yay for second trimester!
@Ellie: awwww! I totally understand the relief. What an awesome sound, am I right?
@mauxie: my dr has a tablet and types on it while we are in the exam room.
pear / 1998 posts
@Crystal: Only one of DH's brothers know now. Thursday is a birthday party for our 2 year old nephew so we will tell his immediate family (parents, siblings, nieces/nephews) then. Once we tell them, everyone in his gigantic family will know, so we wanted to wait until after my 12 week scan.
I wanted to tell my family in person and we live 6 hours away from them, so we told them earlier then I would have liked. Everyone else found out not because we told them, but because they guessed or it was too obvious.
I'm going to be happy when it's no longer a secret!

when does everyone consider themselves to be in the second trimester. I am 14 weeks today and one of my pregnancy apps said "welcome to the second trimester". I thought it was 12 or 13 weeks.
pear / 1770 posts
@californiadreams: There are three different ways to calculate trimesters - gestation, development, and conception. (Why is it so confusing??) I think different books/apps/doctors use different methods, which is why it seems to vary so much. Here's an online calculator that makes a sense of it a little better: http://www.baby2see.com/trimester_calculator.html
I can't wait until I hit second tri by ANY measure!
grapefruit / 4028 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: are you planning on using your nephew to do the reveal? Or just telling them? Either way, how exciting!
@californiadreams: I find this to be so confusing! I think I'll hold off until 14 weeks.
@ms.line: thanks for sharing this!
pear / 1998 posts
@Crystal: Not sure yet. We will probably just tell them. I'm leaving it up to him. I'm not looking forward to the attention
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@ms.line: that link was confusing! i have met second trimester for 2 possibilities, but the third will be August 16th. I thought i was in the clear today!!
pear / 1770 posts
@californiadreams: The conception method doesn't count the two weeks of "pregnancy" before ovulation. (So even though I am considered 11 weeks pregnant by LMP, the conception method starts counting at date of ovulation, which makes me only 9 weeks pregnant [the time my baby has actually been inside me].) I think the conception method is the least popular among doctors, so I would consider you in the 2nd tri!
grapefruit / 4028 posts
@ms.line: @californiadreams: I agree counting based on conception is strange! I had been counting it based on my O date, but dr is basing it off LMP.
@TemperanceBrennan: I understand that! That's why I'm pushing for a small family bday dinner instead of an extended family blowout.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@Crystal: When is your birthday dinner? I'm excited to see your cake
@mauxie: We always meet in an exam room, but there really isn't a need to. It probably makes visits go quicker to not have to change over an exam room between patients.
@Ellie: So great they could find the HB! It's always a tense few moments while they look for it!
@fancyfunction: How fun to get to tell everyone all together!
@ms.line: We didn't end up doing carrier screening. CF is part of the infant screen, so we'd know right after birth if LO is affected. Since we would both have to be carriers and then LO would only have 25% chance of being affected, I knew we wouldn't go through with testing DH and then an amnio for LO if my test came back positive. It's more useful information before you get pregnant in my opinion.

I won't have full screening results back for another week, but my NT scan went great! Measurements all looked good and it was so fun to see him bouncing around in there.
Looking like a little kidney bean!
