If you gained a lot....

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I didn't gain a lot, but did have two LGA babies. After my first was over ten pounds I talked with every OB I saw during my pregnancy and when asked about diet they all said if you don't have gestational diabetes cutting carbs isn't going to do a thing. During both pregnancies I checked my own sugar regularly because I was worried about GD going undiagnosed. Perfect every time.

I gained 22 with my first and 19 with my second.

GD makes babies fat because they metabolize the sugars that your body isn't. Babies from GD moms that haven't watched sugar are fat. Babies from moms that don't have GD but are big are just big babies. If you don't have GD a GD diet isn't going to do much.

I was 9lbs9oz and DH was 9lbs3oz there is pretty much no way we're going to make a five pounder. If your first two were big your third will likely be as well.

@oliviaoblivia: my first was only 7 lbs 13 oz, but I was on blood pressure meds starting at 12 weeks and they are known to make babies smaller. My second was 8 lbs 9 oz 10 days early, and my sugars were always great, if not on the lower side of normal.

I passed my GD test this time too. They wanted numbers under 140 and mine was 119. Now I'm SO confused! I wonder if I should seek out a second opinion....

@Rainbow Sprinkles: so M would have been about 9lbs 3oz ish at 40 weeks. If this one is four now at 30 weeks and gains 1/2 pound per week, she'll be about nine at 40 weeks. You got this.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Perhaps I'm the wrong person to respond to you, because I always gain an immense amount of weight (like 50-60lbs) and have big babies, but with my second pregnancy my OB/GYN was convinced I had GD. Like wanted me to take the three hour test twice in one WEEK (after passing the 1 hour and the first 3 hour test), so I told her I wouldn't take the test a second time and to just proceed as if I had GD. I did the whole thing, ate low carb, kept a food journal, pricked my finger and my blood sugar never got wacky. All it did was make me hungry ALL. THE. TIME. And, my second was born at 37 weeks and weighed 7lbs 13 ounces (very much on par with the 9lb 6 oz first born at 40 weeks 6 days, and my third which was 9lbs 3oz at 39 weeks). I really don't think watching my carbs did anything for the baby's growth, especially since I didn't have GD. If it were me, I would get a second opinion.

@MamaBehr: My OB also wanted me to take the test again!
Very interesting. Did you go into labor naturally at 37 weeks?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I didn't gain an excessive amount with either pregnancy, somewhere between 25-30lbs just like the target I was given. Every doctor and midwife I saw at my HMO (Kaiser) spent most of my appointment talking about weight gain. Some weeks it was too high some weeks it was too low. It bothered me a lot in the beginning but got to be comical by the end of my second pregnancy. I would make bets with my coworkers and DH about which lecture I would get at the upcoming appointment.

@wrkbrk: Just my personal experience but I ate paleo (fairly low carb) 2nd & 3rd trimester with my first pregnancy. LO was 21" and 6lb10oz. The doctor had projected her to be 9.5lbs at my final growth ultrasound based on bone size. I ate a lot more carbs with LO2 and he was 7lbs10oz, shorter, and born earlier. Lots of factors at play (sex, birth order, exercise, different genes, etc) but I think diet played some role.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I did! I started using EPO and my water broke! It was a RCS, so we just the c-section a few hours later. And, the later in your pregnancy you take the test, the more likely you are to fail. I kept thinking, that WHOLE pregnancy, she must get more money for diagnosing me with GD. I still, to this day, do not understand why she was so concerned about the size of the baby (especially since I had a history of a big baby!)

@MamaBehr: OMG you had to do that the whole second half of your pregnancy and you probably didnt have it??

  13. MamaBehr

    pomegranate / 3275 posts

@wrkbrk: Oh I know I didn't have it. My blood sugar never got higher than it was suppose to be and sometimes it got too low because of the low carb stuff (I was a teacher at the time and couldn't eat what I wanted, had no access to a fridge, was out of the house for two meals a day, and had little time to eat when I could, so low carb was super hard to pull off. I don't even remember what I ate! cheese sticks and peanut butter?) I was miserable, and nothing like losing complete faith in your OB/GYN during the last trimester of pregnancy.

I gained a little over 60 lbs with #1, even though I was eating healthy and active. LO was 7 lbs, 9 oz at birth, and the none of the nurses, midwives, or OBs I saw in my practice ever said a word about my weight gain during my pregnancy. I lost 35-40 lbs by 8 weeks pp, and the rest by 9 months without exercising much more than hiking and walking occasionally.

I gained 86 pounds despite eating well and walking 3 miles per day, which was insane since I started at 125. I never got a lecture, but my OB did start to panic when I was gaining 10 pounds every other week. Even then, they never blamed me.

I gained about 45 pounds my doctor never said anything until I brought it up, even then all she said was to just try to eat as healthy as possible but never suggested I go on a diet. She didn't really seem to worry too much about it. After delivery I lost about 20. I'm 6 weeks pp and have about 15 pounds to go.

@wrkbrk: I feel like those ultrasound estimates are often wrong. My friend was pressured into a C-section because they said her baby was too big (They were predicting like a 10 lb-er) and her baby was a little over 7lbs.
@Rainbow Sprinkles: My best friend was told by her Dr. that she was gaining too much weight and she needed to cut out all kinds of foods or the baby would be too big. So she went on a prescribed diet and baby was born at 39 weeks at 5lbs 15oz. I think her doctor was crazy. She wasn't on track to gain even as much as I did.

@travellingbee: that's really interesting. My OB's mindset was that DH and I are not large people so our baby "shouldn't" be measuring so big. But it's really hard to say how accurate those guesses are!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Yeah, clearly I'm not a dr, but Im skeptical of those estimates. Cutting sugars is healthy anyway though so go for it, but I don't think you should worry about your weight.

My OB told me basically the same thing - that foods that really raise your insulin make baby grow to be scary big. He told me to try and stick to foods below a 50 on the glycemic index. Pre-pregnancy I was like 2lbs into having a technically obese BMI (and about 15lbs over where I'm comfortable). BUT I was the one who asked and I was the one who was very concerned about gaining too much weight. So he hasn't pressured me, but when I asked he did give me some very helpful suggestions.

I cut out all flours, rice, potatoes, and sugar. I found it really helpful and like it, but oddly my FIL seems to really resent my diet. It's so weird!! He was the same way when my SIL went on an elimination diet for her daughter's MSPI.

I'm loving this whole discussion--so interesting to see how different doctors are. I gained 43 with my first LO and she was only 6 lbs, 10 oz. I was terrible nauseous and ate pretty much only white carbs the entire pregnancy, just like this one. SO I don't see a correlation there.

I'm 37 weeks now and have my position/size ultrasound today! So I will come back and tell you the projected measurements of this one.

My OB was super strict. She had me on 2400 calories or less and I also exercised a lot. It worked out, I had a 6.6 pound baby who is now 97% for height, I think she is 20% for weight(?) (very tall and slim, how I kind of am). She also told me to cut the carbs. I am not saying this is my personal opinion, this was my OB's direction.

I gained 20 pounds total then lost 5 under her pressure in the last trimester, than she said, "don't lose anymore!" So, I gained 15 total. (I am not obese. I am tall, 5'10, size 8...) Still not sure what to think.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Just FYI...I had an u/s to predict babies size when I was admitted to L&D...they predicted 9lbs8oz...and panicked. DD was 7lbs2oz....WAY off!!!

Just had my 37 weeks appt and ultrasound for size/position. Baby is measuring around 6 lbs, 5 oz which is 40% of all babies at 37 weeks. So I guess my overall big weight gains and white-carb-eating habits aren't making huge babies in my case!

I have a friend who started out tiny (like, super super skinny), gained only 23 lbs, and had a 9 pound baby--and she didn't have GD. But both she and her husband were 9 lb babies.

    pomelo / 5678 posts

@Rainbow Sprinkles: she didn't want me to lose, but she put me on such a strict "diet" that I ended up losing! Basically I almost cried when she told me I was gaining too much, so I went home, cried, then got on the program she had implemented, but it ended up being too much/ unnecessary/ too intense- as in- it caused me to lose weight.

    pomelo / 5678 posts

    @Anagram: interesting!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: were you a large baby? I was 6 pounds and so was my DD! (And I believe my mother gained a lot more than I did...) I wonder if there is a correlation.

    @Greentea: I was 8 lbs 3 oz. So largeish?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I did something similar with my two. My first was 9lbs 3oz and my midwife told me to avoid carbs and fruit with my next in the third trimester. I ended up switching midwives but I did try to limit those things. My second was 8lbs, 13oz so I don't know that avoiding those things actually helped any. (And she's stayed smaller longer than her brother did which makes me think that 6 oz difference wasn't due to diet but just due to their builds.) I agree with @oliviaoblivia: that if you don't have GD what you eat doesn't determine the baby's size.

And fwiw, if baby three does end up being 9lbs for you, no big deal! my 9lber was actually easier to push out that my second, largely due to positioning. There is so much that affects these things. You've got this!

@Anagram: My SIL is the smallest person I've ever known in real life. Like, pre-baby she was 5 feet and less than 100 pounds. She weighed so little she wasn't allowed to give blood. And she just had an almost 9 pound baby . I couldn't believe it.

I didn't think I gained a lot (29.5 lbs) but it was more than my OB wanted (20-25 lbs tops). I was below my starting weight by my 6 week PP appointment though.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I also wanted to say that my mom is 5 feet tall and my dad is 5'6" and both very thin and they had 2 over-8lb-babies. So parent adult size doesn't correlate with baby birth size.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I'm super surprised your OB has any concern at all, you are still in a minimal gain.

I gained 33 lbs with DD2, and I remember I had gained 20 or so lbs by 24 weeks and was freaking out. I gained very little in first and third tri, and the majority in 2nd. Your trajectory is still extremely reasonable!!!

Anyway, I'm normally pretty small- a size 2. I did work really hard as far as diet and exercise, but I was back at my prepregnancy weight and feeling good in my clothes at 9.5 weeks postpartum. Just before my 35th bday.

I think that you'll be fine as far as a total weight gain number goes.

And I get grief on here for my rigid thoughts on weight and diet/exercise, but if you want to lose the baby weight, you can. It may be harder- especially when you're caring for 2 other kids, but it just comes down to clean eating and exercise. It is what it is! The time I spent getting back in shape really sucked, but I got myself together quickly, and now I'm good and just maintaining. When people "want" to lose weight but don't make any kind of effort, they probably won't lose it very easily! But I know you take care of yourself and you'll be FINE!!!
