I was admitted on June 15 at 8P for induction at 40w6d. They started with a foley bulb which gave me intense contractions overnight. These eventually petered out, but by 6a I was 5cm dilated. The Doctor came in to break my water, but failed and OMG did it hurt SO bad. They started the pitocin and the rest of the morning DH and I just kind of hung out, watched some Netflix and ate lots of ice pops
My Dr came back around noon to retry breaking my water, and this time it worked! Unfortunately, I was still at 5cm and maxed out on 20ml of Pitocin but we were hopeful that my water breaking would get something started.
Well, nothing happened, I wasn't even feeling the contractions so they increased my Pit to 26.
Around 6 I started to feel the contractions and they got really strong, really fast. It was shift change, and my new nurse checked me and said I was barely a 5 (if that). She started talking about a c-section, but I insisted on calling my doctor for an epi. I didn't understand why she was talking about a c-section since baby girl's heart rate was great, and I was finally starting to feel something.
The anesthesiologist came around 830 - I always read that the epidural doesn't hurt, but it DID. Actually, I still feel some pain around the epic site 6 weeks later. Looking back I was also probably in transition during this time (crying, shaking, nauseous).
After the epi I rested for about 30 min before feeling like I had to bear down. My nurse checked me and was floored that I was 9cm and called the dr! I was bearing down on my own from about 11-1a, and then pushed for real around 1am. My body completely took over during pushing, it was absolutely the most insane thing I've ever done or felt.
Unfortunately, during the last few minutes of pushing, her heart rate was dropping and I had to get her out quickly. The cord was wrapped around her neck twice and she swallowed meconium, they had to work on her for 2 minutes before she cried. Her initial APGAR was a 2, but eventually a 7 and then a 9.

I definitely was not prepared for labor, it was the hardest thing I'ver ever done, and I'm not sure I ever want to do it again!

May 19th (36w6d)- I was sitting at work not feeling too great, I was experiencing Braxton hicks & back pain. I left work so I could go home drink lots of water & lay down to see if they would go away. After a few hours & lots of water they were still coming regularly however they were not intense. I decided to go to my doctor. They hooked me up to a machine to confirm they were coming, my doctor got excited when he saw they were coming regularly so he asked if I wanted to be checked. After being checked I was told I wasn’t even a 1 and super thick. Since my contractions were regular my doctor asked me if I would go to L&D walk around for an hour then be checked again. SO that’s what we did. After walking I was checked this time I was a full 1 and super thin. The doctor asked us if we wanted to stay & walk around some more that he was pretty confident we’d be having a baby that night or the next day. We decided to go get some food & go home to get prepared. Since I was Strep B Positive he asked me to come back at 6am at the latest to be checked again. So after going home & calling our family to let them know the exciting news we walk tons & prepare for our little guy. We go back to L&D around 4am because my contractions seemed a little more intense. After being checked I was told nothing had changed. We were so sad. When we left I told my husband we were not going back to L&D until I my water broke or I was 100% certain I was in labor.
May 27th (38weeks) – So I have now made it a full week since being told I would be having a baby soon. I was super miserable, my contractions were still happening regularly but they weren’t super intense so I refused to go to L&D (even though our whole family was begging me to, they just “knew” I had made some progress) On this day we had a doctor’s appointment, my doctor had told me if I had changed even a little he would send me to the hospital to be induced since I was still having contractions so regularly. I was pretty nervous and honestly hoping & praying I had made progress. However, I was still just a 1. So we came up with a plan. We scheduled me for an induction on June 6th. I would go into the hospital the night before to have a foley inserted in hopes it would help me dilate. I was a little upset because I was hoping to have a baby that day. I told my husband I was done walking, bouncing, etc. etc. on trying to get this baby out.. That we’d just wait for June 6th and accept he wasn’t coming sooner. So that weekend (Memorial Day weekend) I laid by the pool, had cookouts, enjoyed family time, and just relaxed.
May 31st (38w4d) – My husband was getting ready for work & I got up to use the restroom (for the millionth time) I was cramping pretty bad & when I wiped I had blood tinged mucus. I remember saying “shit” really loud. My husband came in there asking what was wrong. I told him what had happened and I was just so miserable because I was having all these signs labor was coming but I felt like it was never going to happen, that my body just wasn’t getting the memo. He just hugged me and told me to get back in bed. So I’m lying in bed googling “bloody show” in hopes that was what I had just saw. Add to this I was crying because all these ladies were saying their labor was short to follow but I just knew I wouldn’t be having this baby till June 6th after having to be induced that I still had a week of being a miserable whale. Well about that time I heard/felt something weird (kind of like a pop) I remember thinking “was that my water” so I got up & ran… well waddled to the bathroom. Sure enough my water had broken (5:45 am). I called my husband told him to get back home. While waiting for him I showered, got ready, and made my bed. The contractions were nothing at that moment. Once my husband got home we loaded up & left for the hospital. Not sure if any of you have experienced your water breaking but oh my yuck, every contraction water just pours out. When we got to the hospital another lady is checking in so I am just standing there with water dripping all over the floor, waiting to check in. It was pretty embarrassing. Well I am finally admitted and in the room I will deliver in, it’s about 8am at this point and my contractions are pretty intense now coming in at every 2 mins. I was checked and was told I was almost a 2. I told the nurse I had planned on getting an epidural and I would gladly take it whenever I was allowed to get one. Around 10 my epidural came, oh what sweet relief. I was able to chat with family that was there and relax. Around 10:30 I was checked again, I was to a 4. YAY. I was told we’d probably have a baby around 7pm that night to just sit back and relax. Around 11:30 I had noticed that the monitor wasn’t picking up my baby’s heartbeat, so I assumed he had just moved. Well after a few minutes I finally call the nurse in. After she tries for several minutes she pages the doctor, que the tears for me. More nurses and the doctor come in. The doctor tells me he is going to insert an internal monitor which he does and it shows my little guys heart rate is dropping. At that point they are flipping me on my side and throw an oxygen mask on me. During the check he also is surprised to see I am at an 8. SO I had dilated from 4 to 8 within an hour. They said this is what caused his heart rate to drop because he had descended so quickly. By now it was around 12 and he said he had a csection scheduled & that he’d be back after it (an hour max) to check me again. Well about 45 minutes pass by and I’m feeling some pressure so I call the nurse. She checks me and says I’m to a 10 so she pages the doctor and we set up for delivery. My doctor is still in a c section so his midwife comes in. It’s time to push (around 1pm) I push and push some more. Everyone is saying they can see his head and then all the sudden there are several nurses and doctors rushing in. The doctor (one I’ve never met & is not at my practice) tells the midwife to move that they needed to get the baby out (apparently his heart rate was fluctuating too much and this doctor had seen it on the monitor so that is why he came in). Luckily as soon as this random doctor walks up my doctor walks in. He informs me the baby’s heart rate is doing some bad stuff & we needed to get him out. He was going to give me three more contractions (pushes) and if nothing happened I’d be rushed back for a c section. He also says he will do the vacuum assist, in hopes it will help out. Well after three pushes and three failed vacuums assist everything goes crazy. My family is told to get out of the way and I’m being pushed back for an emergency c section. Everyone is literally running and they won’t allow my husband to come back so I’m pretty upset. My doctor literally is screaming at people to do things once we reach the OR & I am told I will be put to sleep because they do not have time to numb me for the c section. So the next thing I know I am waking up in recovery. My husband is there eyes full of tears which makes me panic. I am assured everything went smoothly and our boy is healthy however in NICU due to swelling in the brain. I was able to visit him where we got skin-to-skin and breastfed him where he latched on like a champ. He only had to stay one night in NICU. We were told later the reason he wasn’t able to be delivered naturally & the reason his heart rate was doing what it did was because his umbilical cord was too short.

@MrsKRB: What a great story. Glad you ended up not having to have a C Section & she came out healthy. On the not ready for delivery & not sure if you want to do it again, I'm totally with you!! Funny thing is, my doctor came to see me before I went home & said "just because you had a csection this time & his umbilical cord was too short does not mean it will happen next pregnancy." I told her first off I wasn't even ready to talk about having another one but if I did I would probably just have a scheduled csection because my experience was very intense/scary and I wouldn't even want to risk having to go through that again.

At my 38 week appointment, my OB said I was 3 cm dilated and she did an aggressive membrane sweep. I lost my mucus plug in the days that followed and my Braxton hicks started to ramp up. I put a call in on Friday morning since I had very regular BH, although I knew I wasn't in active labor. The OB checked me and since I was 4-5 cm he sent me immediately over to the hospital. Luckily my in-laws were already taking care of my older son, so my husband met me at the hospital.
My OB was on call that day (yay). The monitored me and since I wasn't in active labor, she told us to have lunch and walk around town. We had a really relaxing afternoon date (which was awesome after being on modified bedrest for months). When I got back to the hospital around 4 pm, I was 5 1/2 cm. I was admitted since my OB didn't want to send me home.
I was not in active labor and I was trying to start it up! We walked the halls, I took a shower, I bounced and bounced... And since I hadn't really progressed past 6 cm, I let the Dr. break my water @ 8 pm. Active labor and painful contractions started about an hour later. I continued to bounce on my ball, walk the halls, and take showers. I really wished I had a jacuzzi tub, but I had chosen to deliver in a different hospital than ds1). I continued to dilate, and things got intense. I was puking and the labor became really difficult to manage. I could hardly speak and was moaning. My husband was doing a great job, but I was having trouble staying on top of the contractions. By this time it was almost 2 am and I was spent. I didn't have the endurance after being on bedrest for months.
My Dr came to check on me @ 2 am... I was at 8 cm. I felt like I was in transition, but she said not yet... So I decided to get the epidural. It was a hard decision to make, but since I knew transition laid ahead, I knew I needed a break before pushing.
Once you decide that you want pain relief, you want it immediately! I felt like the anesthesiologist took FOREVER to come! Lol! (My husband said he was there in 5 min). All I have to say is that the drugs were amazing!! I had an unmedicated birth with DS1, but wow, the epi was fantastic! I could talk and joke around and rest!
I rested for about an hour or so and then I started feeling pressure. They checked me again and it was time to push!!! Luckily I could still feel contractions and could push easily. Everything was so peaceful at this moment as we were about to welcome our baby. After20 minutes of pushing, our baby boy arrived! What sweet relief! He was healthy and BIG! The nurse had to weigh him twice because no one believed that he was 9lbs 11 oz (born at 38 w 4 d). After such a dramatic pregnancy,we were so happy that he was here safe and sound.

We got to the hospital for the induction at 8 am. Once I got settled in my room, the doctor came in and checked me. I was 3cm, 50% effaced and -2 station. It sounded like I was in for a long day! Around 9:30 they started the pitocin. At 11 the doc came in and checked again and I was 3-4cm, 50% and -1...a little progress. She also broke my water - yuck! Contractions were manageable at this point but becoming more uncomfortable. Around noon I decided I'd get the epidural before things got worse! Anesthesia came in and placed the epidural. It took longer than my first to place and wasn't working. My husband couldn't be in the room for it, so he was outside wondering what was taking so long while they tried to push different meds and get it to take. Around 1:00 contractions were so painful and I was feeling pain between my legs. The nurse rushed to call the doc to check me and I was freaking out that my husband was going to miss the birth! Someone ran to find him. The doc checked me and it was go time -baby was right there! Anesthesia told me there was nothing they could do at that point, but my doc told them to give me a spinal. She did it super quick and it worked right away! They flipped me over, I did one set of 3 pushes and baby's head was out! A few more tiny pushes and she was born at 1:38 pm! She's 6lbs 7oz and 19inches. I had zero tearing and felt amazing after- I could hardly tell I had a baby! I'm still in disbelief how quickly it happened and that I almost had to go without meds ( my worst nightmare lol)

Contractions started around 8:30 pm and were pretty regular- 3 mins apart and a minute long. We started getting ready after 20 min, but didn't call the Dr until it had been an hour. She had me go in, so we packed up the toddler and dropped him off on our way. It was about 10:30 when we arrived. The nurse did my intake and then the hospital doctor checked me. She thought I was another patient (32 weeks) at first. Every one kept asking if I was sure I was in labor, apparently I was dealing with the pain too well. The nurse told me to go walk for an hour because they were too busy to give me a room. When I came back they had a room ready and hooked me up to be monitored. I kept walking around the room because my contractions were pretty regular when I walked but slowed when they made me sit in bed.
After about 2-3 hours I asked to be put on pitocin. (I was pretty sure from last time that I would need it). They started a drip and made me stay in bed. After a while I was only 5 cm so they upped the pitocin and after that my water broke. There was meconium in my water and the contractions got really painful immediately. I'd had one unmedicated birth and as soon as I felt that pain I knew I didn't want to do it again. The anesthesiologist came pretty quickly. He did his thing and I was able to stay calm through the contractions for him. It made me wonder if I should do it without an epi, but once that kicked in it was wonderful.
I could still feel the pain of contractions on the one side though, so they wound up messing with it and giving me a few extra doses to try to get both sides. Soon I was completely numb from the waist down. By now it was almost 6 am and time for a shift change so the nurse left. I could still feel pretty painful pressure in my upper abdomen but otherwise just waited and dozed between contractions.
After more than an hour waiting we started to get impatient. Finally a nurse came in to check on me. She took one look and told me I was ready to have a baby and went running for a doctor. He was practically popping out on his own! They raised my legs up in the stirrups (since they were completely numb). With 3 pushes I felt him pop out and all the pressure on my ribs was finally gone. They immediately took him to clean him and the doctor had me push to get the placenta out. Then he started stitching me up for the little tear I had. While he was stitching, one of my legs started to slide off the stirrups but I couldn't stop it because it was numb. He yelled for someone to help. He couldn’t touch anything while he was sewing me up! I also had a bleed before he left, but he stopped it quickly and it wasn't a big problem.
Jeremiah was born 6/12 at 8:14 am, 7lb 14 oz and maybe 21.5 inches long (when we took him for a check up two days later he was only 20.5! We don't have any official hospital records so we can't check)
I was pretty much numb and couldn't move from my waist down for several hours after birth. Honestly, I think that was actually the best part! The nurses kept commenting on how calm I was about having a baby but after my water broke, I was only calm because of that epi.

@MrsKRB: C Section recovery wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. Really it was just more inconvenient than anything. Like first couple of days I couldn't bend over so that resulted in me needing a lot of help, then you have the three week not carrying anything or driving rule. Etc. Etc. PS. I didn't even say earlier how stinking cute your little girl is. I also LOVE LOVE her name!
@Alba4: Oh what a chunker. So precious! It seems your body was aware of how big your little guy was & luckily didn't make you wait till 40+ weeks for delivery.
@catomd00: Oh wow, How quick! I am glad you at least got the spinal & your husband was able to make it back in time. I wonder if it happening so fast has something to do with you feeling great afterwards?! Congratulations!
@meadow: Love it. Can't wait to read it. don't worry if it's long! :))
@brownepiano: Epis are amazing. Which of course I have never been the type to say I wanted to go natural which I'm glad I wasn't because once those contractions kick in. Wowzers! The no control of leg my legs cracked me up. Mine kept falling off the bed before labor started. Like I'd just watch it but there was nothing I could do. Plus they felt HUGE. Anyways, glad your delivery of your little guy went smoothly.

OK finally wrote it, then edited it down for HB!
Monday, 5/24: I went to the OB for a routine checkup and my blood pressure was a little high, there was a trace amount of protien in my urine, and my weight gain was significant (due to my swelling continuing to increase) so the OB sent me to the hospital for monitoring. I kept saying it was just for practice and I wasn’t going to have the babies today. I drove calmly from the doctor’s office to the hospital. I checked into L&D and was hooked up to 3 monitors (contractions and one for each of the babies heartbeats), had blood drawn, gave a urine sample and answered a million admitting questions. The doctors decided that babies and I were okay (my blood pressure came down and the babies HBs were looking good). I was sent home and at this point I was diagnoed with a mild pre-eclamsia.
Wednesday, 5/26: Follow up appointment with OB – they weren’t super worried but said I was unlikely to make it until my scheduled c-section on 6/10.
Thursday, 5/26: I called the doctor’s office for my blood/urine results from yesterday’s appointment. The OB reviwed them and said to go back to the hospital for monitoring like Monday. They said to call my DH and have him come because this could be it! This was a big shock for me. I tried to tell myself it was practice again, but I was feeling very overwhelmed. I drove to the hospital with tears streaming down my face the whole time thinking how I wasn’t ready, I wanted them to bake just a little bit more! I got to the hospital and when I made it up to L&D a few of the nurses even remarked – “You’re back?” Same routine as last time, including the millions of questions (seriously, that wasn’t kept on file. After a few hours, I was sent home again. Practice round 2, complete.
Friday, 5/27: I had an appointment at my high risk OB. We did an ultrasound to check on fluid levels and breathing/heart rates. My BP continued to be high but not astronomical & babies were doing fine, so they decided they wanted to see me back Tuesday instead of waiting until my scheduled appointment the next Friday. At this point, they were recommending that my scheduled c-section be bumped from 6/10 to 6/3 (37 weeks instead of 38). I was told to stay indoors for the holiday weekend because it was supposed to be ungodly hot.
Tuesday, 5/31: My DH drove me to the high risk OB appointment. When they took me back for my vitals the nurse was not happy. My BP was 160/104. She tried a couple times and let me go to the bathroom then try again. Still no good. Then we went in for the growth ultrasound which was at least 45 minutes. I enjoyed seeing the babies and knowing they were okay in there. At the end of the appointment, the doctor usually comes in to review the stats with me and tell me how things are going. Well, this time, the doctor came in and didn’t even look at the ultrasound and just said to me, “It’s time to go the hospital, you’re going to have some babies today!” I remember my eyes opening big. This is it! In hindsight, I was sad that I didn’t get one last update on their stats. Would have been fun to know how much the ultrasound said they weighed then a few hours later known their real weights. But oh well. Apparently my BP had reached a level where I was at risk to have seizures! My pre-eclamsia at this point was no longer considered mild.
So off to L&D we went - I was feeling a distinct sense of calmness as we drove. Nothing like the week before when I was crying. After my two rounds of practice, it was no big deal when I was hooked up to the monitors upon arriving at the hospital. Because I ate lunch and drank water at the earlier doctor appointment, I had to wait a few hours for the c-section. I was scheduled for about 9pm. They kept monitoring me and the babies. I wasn’t allowed to drink anything and after a while I started to feel slight cramping in my tummy. I chalked it up to not drinking, but looking at the computer screen, it was clear I was having some intermittent contractions. About 8:30pm, my OB came in and mentioned that they noticed my contractions were getting kind of regular so she wanted to check me. Turns out I was 5cm dilated at this point and really didn’t feel a thing! This was a trigger to go do the C-section earlier than planned even if the 6 hours hadn’t passed since my last food/drink. Into the OR and the first step was getting my spinal block which the anesthesiologist had a hard time with because of my swelling. My edema had recently come up to about my belly button on the front and back of me. So when he tried to put the needle in it went wonky. That was a very uncomfortable feeling and weirded me out some. However, once it kicked in I couldn’t feel ANYTHING. I did feel some tugging as she dug out the babies and we waited patiently for the official birth. At 8:48pm: “It’s a girl!” Our OB delivered baby A “DD” and DH and I looked at each other with utter joy as we heard our little girl crying her first cries. I started crying and thinking of proms and weddings and dance recitals. DH said to me “Two girls!!” We were so happy. Then two minutes later, I felt the second baby delivered, heard the cries, then with some hesitation, the OB announced – “It’s a….. boy!” DH and I looked at each other quite confused, but happy nonetheless. Once the babies were cleaned up, they were laid on me skin to skin and they immediately held hands. It was absolutely adorable and I loved the feeling of meeting them. Unfortunately, the meds had me a bit wonky so our photos of that moment are a bit “rough”.
The rest of the time in the hospital went smoothly and we came home after the typical 3 days for a c-section. No NICU!
ETA: baby A: little girl - 6lbs 19in; baby B: little boy - 5lb 10oz 19 in

My due date came and 4am contractions started. 5-10 min apart, 60-90 seconds each, but not painful, just irritating. And that lasted for almost 6 days. 40w5d appointment came and we scheduled induction for 41w0d, much to my chagrin. Membranes swept. 2-3cm.
I literally cried, went for a run, and walked for hours and hours. Nothing. I called my doula and cried. I let go (on some level, not every level) of the fears left from my c-section birth with my son.
Then I decided to pump. 5 min each side. It did get contractions going stronger, but I realized how late it was, so instead of doing another round, at the advice of my doula (by phone), I tried to sleep. I couldn't. Called MIL to come watch my son "sometime tomorrow will be baby, maybe you should come tonight so it's not like 2am when you're driving."
1 hr later, "MIL, please come very soon."
1 hr later "OMG, MIL DRIVE FASTER!" and doula--please come over.
Both arrived within 5 minutes of each other--about 2 hours after I was pretty sure this was labor. Drove to hospital. It's like an 8 minute drive, contraction getting to car, 3 while driving, another in the parking lot.
"I don't think these are 5 minutes apart" (me to doula)
(Her to me) "more like 2-3 minutes."
Registration.... a really great nurse saved me from them and wheeled me right back. They couldn't tell me how dilated I was because my water bag was bulging and my cervix was high. And then POP, water shot across the room like a flipping canon (thank goodness noone was downrange!) Now the nurse could really check. 10cm but not engaged. I was both surprised and not surprised.
But boy did she descent fast. She was ready to go.
48 minutes after I checked in, I had my (med free!) VBAC baby. Had a good amount of stitches. She came out fast.
Healing was so much better than with my c section EXCEPT days 11-15 or so, the itching and increased pain from the stitches made me think something was wrong! I also know I pushed myself way too hard this time.
I can still kind of feel the places where I tore, and I have some worries about that, but time will tell...
Baby girl Airy is perfect. She was 8lbs and 20 1/4" at 40w6d.
And I would I say I was sure I was in labor for about 3 1/2 hours. It was probably about 5 hours? plus the 5 3/4 days of prodromal.
***ETA: And that is the abridged version. Yikes.
Also important: I really felt like I missed out on not hearing my son's first cry. They handed my daughter to me and she immediately started a watery/bubbly cry (fast birth--still full of fluid at that point). I remember it but it wasn't the highlight of the day.
Two more PSs to my story:
1. When she was descending my left foot suddenly went painfully numb and it totally freaked me out! I had people rubbing that foot for a good hour after birth. Felt wonky for days but it's finally back to normal.

@MrsKRB: Never want to do it again? I love the story. Sounds so hard! Also... second labors are almost always faster! At least the getting to 10cm from where ever your body thinks is "go time" is faster. Such a cutie!
@MMcAlli: That was so stressful waiting like that! I remember how much support you were to me during my week of prodromal labor and I will never forget it. So terrifying to get pulled away from family like that. Happened to me with my son. I'm sorry. I hope you are healing now. Birth can really be terrifying.
@Alba4: I love when they tell you how big your baby is.
@catomd00: Woo hoo! And no tears! So awesome.
@brownepiano: That's pretty cool about how well the numbness worked out. How long did they keep you in bed before you could get up? I love that you were calm.
@meadow: I love the surprise. And I wonder if they have the estimated weights on file that you could ask about them?

@pastemoo: Wow! I'm glad it was all fast once she decided to come.
I stayed in bed for about 4 hours before I got up. They weren't strict but wanted me to get help the first time I got up.
