Can't believe what a difference a few days can make! Up until a couple days back, we had only two occasions where Em slept for close to 4 hours. All others had been 2-3.
I had heard from a few people (and also read it here, probably from one of you!) that 10 lbs or 6 weeks is often the turning point for babies to start sleeping longer stretches. I think this really might be true! She was 9 lbs 11 oz at her 1m checkup last Thursday and since a week from birth had been averaging a weight gain of 2oz per day, putting her right around 10 lbs now.
Saturday night was pretty decent and better than most with a couple of 3.5 hour stretches. But last night was awesome! We put her down around 9:30 and she slept for almost 6 hours. She nursed at 3:20am and was back to sleep at 4:20 (she was fussy going back down...I think she was trying to poop). She then slept for another 2.5 hours after this.
I really hope we are on to something here and it wasn't just a fluke. And hopefully our routine won't get too screwed up over the holiday. We are spending tonight and maybe tomorrow night with family, so it will be the first time away.
Hope you all have a fantastic holiday...

@SLR: That's great! A LC told me about the 10lb 6w thing. Also, that 5-6 hour stretches is considered sleeping through the night. I hope the sleep continues to improve. We were at about that at 4 weeks (he was already over 10 lbs). Now he's sleeping some 6-7 hour stretches at almost 8 weeks.

Hi all. Sounds like lots of us are starting to settle into more of a routine which is great news!! M is getting more difficult about napping and is eating more frequently during the day (closer to 2 hours between feedings instead of 3). But she is still an awesome little night sleeper. Last night she slept from 11pm to 6am!! I think her reflux is getting worse though so we're waiting on an email from the doctor on what else we can do to help give her relief.

@MamaMoose: Is she napping between the two hour feedings? Is it possible that she's really just tired and not hungry again? Around five weeks I realized that when I actually though my guy was hungry again he was really just tired. Do you put her down for naps and have a routine or do you just let them happen? For naps we swaddle and put on white noise just like night time when we are at home.

@ChelseaRose: sometimes I do think she's just tired because she'll fuss and fuss so I'll feed her and then she'll eat for ten minutes and pass out. We don't schedule naps yet exactly but we try to be sure she gets some sleep in between each feeding.

@highwire: It has slowly gotten better and better, with an occasional night of going backward. My mom friends with babies who are about a month older told me it would get better and that he would sleep longer, which he has. Last night was the longest stretch yet: 10:45pm-6:30am. Of course, it felt like my boobs were going to explode in the morning.

@MamaMoose: By routine I meant more like the steps that you take like: change diaper, swaddle, rock in glider, white noise, in crib, nap time. At least for my little guy, when I would feed him again without putting him down for a solid nap, then he would end up getting stimulated again and overtired. We tend to follow a similar pattern (for days that we are just at home with no outings, visitors, etc.) that starts whenever he wakes up which can be anytime between 6am and 8:30am and is just the basic eat, play, nap.

I think 10 lbs is true. LO is already 10 lbs 3 oz and usually sleeps 5 1/2 hours at night and then eats, then can go for four hours.

Anyone starting to think about a baby naming/meet the baby/baptism/christening type of get together? I'm Jewish but am not regularly attending a temple right now so I don't have a rabbi that is want to do a baby naming ceremony. But, the person who officiated our wedding does newborn celebrations so I just emailed him about setting something up. I missed the hostess bandwagon this holiday season and I absolutely love it so I'm ready to plan something again. And there are a ton of people who haven't gotten to meet the baby yet and this would be a great way to get everyone o our home to meet her relatively easily...

@highwire: yup, his baptism is scheduled for Jan 20. Since I didn't have a baby shower his baptism is going to be a relatively big event. Will start working on the deets after the holidays.
@SLR: Great to hear about longer hours. I hope that last night was not a fluke but LO slept for 5 hours! I still woke up at the 3 hour mark then the 4 hour mark (I guess my body is used to waking up every 3 hours now). We will see.
Happy holidays everybody!

Happy Holidays ladies! It's been a very tearful weekend in our house but we've cheered up today to enjoy Christmas Eve with our beautiful baby girl and looking forward to tomorrow with her. Hope you all have a lovely first Christmas with your gorgeous babies and get lots of sleep (best present ever, eh?) and baby cuddles xo

Happy Holidays, everyone!! Jealous of all your night sleepers - four hours is the longest we go (and that's sleeping on me). He's now 7 lbs 11 oz, which still seems puny compared to your 10'pounders, but it's a 2 lb gain in 1 month, so we'll take it.
We went to the Dr's today as baby had flecks of blood in 4 of his last 5 diapers. His poop was mucousy, too. I had assumed he was going to tell me to cut out dairy, but he says he's "skeptical" of a link between dairy in a mom's diet and baby GI issues. I'm still going to cut out dairy for two weeks and we'll see what happens.
Everybody loves to give babies presents - our LO is already super spoiled!! He's the first grandchild on both sides. Is your baby being spoiled this holiday season?

@Mrs. Tricycle: miss Lily is! I told DH we didn't need to get her any gifts but he got her 3. The girl has got more than clothes than she could ever wear.
Hope everyone has a great holiday with their little ones!

Merry Christmas! LO survived 20 hours in the car to get to Grandma and Grandpa's for Christmas. She was great! We stopped about every three hours to nurse and change diapers.
This week we've also had 2 nights of over 8 hour sleep, one night in the hotel and once here at my parents. Hoping the trend continues. We were only getting 5-6 on a regular basis before.

@JessLC: wow that's amazing! 9 hours! I wake up every night after about 5 hours now waiting for her to get up. So not fair!

I can't even imagine sleeping that long! I wake up hungry after four hours we've been hovering around a 4 hour stretch and then usually another 2 3 hour stretches before morning awake.

@Mrs. Tricycle: you should see all the other pics that didn't turn out great. It took a couple dozen to get one cute one! My husband was impressed that I got him propped up like that at not even 8 weeks.

@ChelseaRose: what a handsome little fella! so cute! i too have about a dozen versions of the same picture stored up in my phone - it takes forever to get a good one!
@LemonLong: 20 hours! wow. good job mama! i have to do a 4 hour car ride in a few days...did you just stop at a rest stop and nurse in the car?
@kml636: same here! my body naturally wakes up a 3am and 5am now, and then by 6am i'm wide awake because my boobs are so full, i'm just eagerly awaiting the first peep from her!

@ChelseaRose: omg gorgeous!
Merry Christmas from Ariela - we still haven't changed into her Christmas dress, but we will : )

@JessLC: at first I tried pumping in the car so we'd have bottles ready when we stopped, but it was a huge pain. So I ended up just nursing. We made our stops at rest stops and gas stations and I just nursed in the car.

@ChelseaRose: love! He looks so snuggly!

SO MUCH CUTE! Hope you all are having a wonderful holiday (those who celebrate) and safe/smooth travels. We are visiting DH's family and have been astounded at how good Ellie has been. We ven went to a wedding and she made it through the whole ceremony without a peep!
Here she is on Christmas Eve smiling it up for her Auntie

Do you mamas notice your LO is eating for much less time? She's 5 weeks today and up until 4 weeks she would eat 15 mins on each side. She started finishing earlier and earlier. Now she eats 10 mins on the first side and only 5 mins in the other. I guess it's normal??

Love the pictures! It's been hard to keep up w this thread over the holidays but I hope everyone is doing well! I think after stressing a week over my milk supply (and trying everything i can think of to increase it) I've accepted that it sucks and so I've been giving her a bottle of formula at night.
Anyway here's a couple pics of Evelyn! She turned a month last week!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@kml636: LO was 4 weeks on Monday and I've also noticed her eating time decreasing. I think they are just bigger and able to get more milk faster? It's weird because my LO is now eating more frequently during the day. But doing longer stretches at night.
